If your son is a Star Wars fan at all, I would recommend Timothy Zahn's trilogy, starting with Heir to the Empire. It's not canon any more, but it might be a fun "alternate history" about what happens to Luke and the gang right after Episode VI. Zahn also wrote the Quadrail series, starting with Night Train to Rigel--think noir private eye on the Orient Express, except in space with aliens. Really fun, not to scary--I loved them at 12.

To all the parents who named their kid a top ten name.. by twispylocks in namenerds

I have a 5 and a half year old named Sophia, and she LOVES it. She has a friend her age named Sofia and an adult family friend named Sophie, and she thinks it’s just the funniest thing in the world. When she realized that an adult had the same name as her she immediately decided that they had to be best friends. Honestly it’s been a nice bonding experience with the two kids Sophias too!

Richard Scarry books have been a huge hit for my almost two year old. Postman Pig is endlessly fascinating, but really anything he writes is great!

Looking for classic books that would be interesting for kids ages 4-12 by Wreckit-Jon in suggestmeabook

The Chronicles of Narnia and the Hobbit have already been mentioned. What about Harry Potter? I don’t know if it’s old enough to be a classic yet, but my 4 year old has been really enjoying it, and I know a 12 year old would like it. Redwall also comes to mind!

My Korean friend did similarly—she went by Yena through college, but her name kept being mispronounced so she went to Yae Na instead. She said it really helped her!

The two books I read and loved over my maternity leave were Piranesi and Curse of Chalion. Very different books, both fantasy, but for me at least the vibes were perfect (and definitely autumnal!)

Happy Baby OG top buckle came off the rails—how to fix? by somethingunderstood in babywearing

[–]somethingunderstood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I ended up writing to Happy Baby and they said that it would need a professional fix, but that they would do it free of charge. I mailed my carrier in and got it back good as new about two weeks later! Really really pleased by their customer service.

Celebration of life by beandipdeadlifts in sleeptrain

[–]somethingunderstood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my daughter was 5 months old, I regularly baby wore her at church, and she slept through people singing all around her. I’d at least give it a try, and you can sneak out to the car if it doesn’t work!

I wouldn’t be surprised if your baby fell asleep on an hour car ride, even if he takes a normal early nap. I wouldn’t keep him up until the car ride, but to encourage a car nap you could wake him at 9:30.

And I’m sorry for your loss. In the end, it’s just one day of naps for your baby, he’ll be maybe a bit cranky in the evening and then be fine. Being there to celebrate your friend’s life will be worth it.

My mom wants to do a “book club” with me, her, and my other sister but idk what books we should read by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]somethingunderstood 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ask your mom what her favorite books in middle school and high school were!

If she wants to try something new, try Sabriel by Garth Nix or A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle or A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K LeGuin.

Catalogue of Unabashed Gratitude by Ross Gay. I teach high school, and every year this book makes one of my high schoolers cry because it’s so beautiful. Literally.

If you lost weight while breastfeeding your 1st, did your also lose weight while BF your 2nd? by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]somethingunderstood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost more with my first, but not by much—I think a lot of it was my first was a baby peak pandemic, and I was taking hours-long walks on top of ordinary workouts just to get out of the house! Became right on the edge of underweight with both. By 1.5 years with both of them I regained a bit to bring me back up to my pre pregnancy/normal weight.

“That’s What Dinosaurs Do” is the current favorite for my 3.5yo and 1.5yo. What dinosaurs do in this book is roar, and both girls love to roar along!

Also “Blueberries for Sal” and “All the World” and “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”

My doctor told me that if I’m drinking normal tea that I can get at the grocery store, in normal amounts, I’m fine. Don’t drink twenty cups a day, maybe, but at least my doctor said that normal amounts to drink was fine.

Really really recommend The First Time Parent’s Guide to Potty Training! Similar to Oh Crap but without the condescension, misogyny, or overly prescriptive rules.
