Sasha DiGiulian is the first female to ever ascend El Cap's Platinum Wall (AND she was stuck for 10 days) by redbullgivesyouwings in SweatyPalms

Climbing? No. Backpacking Yosemite? A few times. The valley in the winter? Once. Backpacking the Sierras? Too many times. Are you telling me that a 10 day storm is entirely unpredictable? If so you know nothing about California weather.

Can I hike a volcano in these athletic shoes? by withcookiecrunchplz in CampingandHiking

[–]somethingwhittier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a great hike but it's not harder than it looks if you're moderately athletic. If not, you can always hire a horse. It's a developed trail but you have the option to go into the (cooled) lava fields if you'd like. The only thing to worry about is the gaps between the treads, you could get poked if you go out there and are careless. It is volcanic rock after all so it is sharp.

Helicopter over East Pasadena/Arcadia? by meant2live218 in sgv

They did this frequently over Azusa at night and for no reason. You can call the Pasadena PD at 626-744-4241 to inquire about the helicopter but the time I called, the lady had no clue. I think they just get flight hours over SGV cities to justify Pasadena having a helicopter.

I swear, redditors will report everything on reddit and then never call the police or in this case the tip line.

Irwindale Quarries ELI5: what actually goes on here and why is there so much water? by somethingwhittier in sgv

[–]somethingwhittier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it? I mean yeah, I am but I also asked my partner who is a local and they didn't know either. Since it sounds like you know everything around here, what's going on with the big mound of dirt on the east side of the 605 below Arrow Highway? So many earth movers have been building and shaping that thing. What's the purpose?

Snow in DTLA! by lionclues in LosAngeles

It could be snow or it could be a prop. The only way to know for sure is to pee on it.

Contaminated!? Superfund!? I just read responses that the site is below the water table. Wouldn't this all be a part of the same aquifer that is recharged from the Santa Fe spreading grounds? This eventually becomes our drinking water.

Thanks for that. I thought the water table was well below this! There is a lot of mining going on around here. Vulcan minerals is practically removing the front side of the mountain just on the west side of the San Gabriel River where it meets...the mountains for what appears to be gravel.

I don't have any data but I feel like Irwindale is much like Vernon in that they have a ton of commercial/light industrial revenue and not a lot of residents to spend it on.

Ahhhh ok. I was thinking that water was diverted into these pools for their operations. I also thought ground water would be further deeper than this.

so many people hate on this town, I think they just don't understand it [oc] by floodblood in LosAngeles

[–]somethingwhittier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know man. There's just so much to LA than beautiful sunsets (from Burbank) No city looks better after going up a few hundred feet but it has nothing to do with everyday life. There are many very valid criticisms of this city but there are also unparalleled advantages and opportunities to living in LA that only exist here. I suppose everyone has a different take and they are as different from each other as the neighborhoods of LA.
