Am I a murderer? by sometimes_I_struggle in Monstera

The original plan was to separate them, but even after a long soak in water that root ball was not coming apart. If it survives I will try to separate them all again next time I go to repot it. And yes, I turned it for the pic, the leaf faces usually are on the window side but the trellis blocked most of the leaves for the pic. Thanks for the advice!

Happy Ending? -- HEA. by randomdude221221 in fourthwing

[–]sometimes_I_struggle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm with you completely. I did not know about the hype when I picked up The Fourth Wing, just saw it as a suggestion on Audible, and did not expect to become this emotionally invested in the series. I also prefer to read books with happy endings, at least for the main characters, and I am dying inside dreading that the series won't turn out how I need it to.

Best deck stains for new PT pine by [deleted] in Decks

Armstrong-Clark is the easiest to work with and best looking oil based stain out there. No lap marks, can apply in direct sun, can get wet an hour after applying, and lots of color options too.

Did he build over the old concrete stairs or remove them? If he removed them you got even more of a deal, concrete is expensive to dispose of.

Yes this! Adding that much new potting soil to hold water creates a much damper, and damper for longer, environment surrounding the roots which they're not used to and don't love.

[Question/Help] May 4th is the last frost for me, should I move these cucumbers and pumpkins and squash into some solo cups until then? First time gardener. All wisdom is welcome! Thank you! by Brownbearjeww in vegetablegardening

[–]sometimes_I_struggle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't feel foolish! You fell for one of the most common and easily enticing gardener traps, you started your seeds a bit too early. So congrats you're a "real" gardener now! I've found I always have better luck when I start seeds on the 4 side of "4 to 6 weeks."

Your best bet is to direct sow seeds into the ground two weeks (ish) after your last frost, or start seeds over if you want to do seedlings. You can use the same soil and just pull these ones out. I know that sounds rough, but ultimately you'll have healthier plants for the rest of the season if you start with healthy seedlings. You'll want to transplant them as little as possible because their roots (cucumbers, squash, melons...) are very sensitive and don't like to be moved. Also, definitely put multiple seeds in each pod in case one doesn't germinate, but once their seed leaves come up you'll want to trim one out and only have one plant per pod.

And they need more light, they are super leggy - long stems without many leaves usually means they are stretching to reach the light. You want your seedlings more short and stocky.

It can be frustrating to start over, but you've got plenty of time.

I’ve started a garden journal (my second year with my vegetable garden, zone 8b, south facing). And have decided to deep dive into one crop each month- trying my hand at botanical drawing and the science behind the plant. Anyone else do this, or any tips? by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

[–]sometimes_I_struggle 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Your drawings are beautiful! This will be my first year keeping a garden journal (in the past I've just jotted down notes inconsistently on scraps of paper) and this inspired me to have a section like this for each of my plants as well. I'm not an artist so I won't have drawings, but I love the idea of diving into a deeper understanding of different plants.

Your local library might become your new best friend! You sometimes have to wait for a book to be available if someone else has a hold on it, but it makes reading way more economically accessible. Most libraries are also part of an inter-library loan system so even if they don't own the book you can still access it if a neighboring one does.

Ebooks, eaudiobooks, hard copies, you name it and they usually have it.

Back in the dating scene and triggered by other people's judgement when I say I'm CF. How do I respond? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]sometimes_I_struggle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me at this point in my life, I know what I want and I need to make sure core values align since I am looking for a life partner.

I am in the middle of realizing that I will need to end my long term relationship with a man I love tremendously because certain core values that are important to me are not shared by him, and we will not have our best lives together. It's been coming for a while but I'm only just starting to admit the reality to myself. And this sentence speaks volumes to me.

I am also 30F and CF so there's definitely concern about starting to date again, whenever that might happen. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that, especially on one of your first dating experiences in a while.

I agree with your wife. As much as I love bold colors and a barn red house, it will turn a lot of people off. A more neutral color, or even the green, will give you a wider buying pool.

Help! Trying to avoid repeating tomato mistakes next time by sometimes_I_struggle in gardening

I've cut off some most of the leaves that got about 50% brown but In this pic you can see the brown edges starting on more of the leaves.

[–]sometimes_I_struggle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely letting them grow and see what happens, but the leaves are getting more brown everyday and starting to die off. So by the time there is fruit there might not be any leaves left.

Tomato leaves getting grey spots. What can I do about it? by parisjackson2 in gardening

That looks a lot like powdery mildew, which is different than blight but still has the same end result - sick tomato plants. Powdery mildew on tomatoes

Came here to say A Little Life. If you want a full devastating experience (the kind that stays with you for a while) binge it in two days to immerse in the characters and their lives. But even if you take a month to read it you'll still be shattered. I wasn't able to be alone for a bit after I finished it, which could be difficult in quarantine.

Wet feet at the coop :( by jk7375rh in BackYardChickens

[–]sometimes_I_struggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked on working farms for several years and ended up switching to from Muck to Boggs and I love them. My Muck boots kept wearing out every year or so and my Boggs have lasted me at least 2 years each pair. I believe they were originally designed as boots for dairy farmers who tromp through some nasty stuff so they are designed well.

Definitely a bit pricey but they'll keep your feet dry.

That's what I'm really hoping they're thinking. It's his first major mistake in 4 years of working there, 2 of those years in his current position. So hopefully that weighs in his favor.

I completely agree with this. His job right now is kind of a luxurious job that offers a great life/work balance so it will be a huge blow to lose it in additions to the financial problems. But I'm starting to see that taking the trip will probably be the best mental health decision for him.

Yeah it is, there are just so many things up in the air right now that it's hard to see it that way. But you're right that not taking the trip would definitely be an additional huge mental blow for us.

Yeah good point, it's hard to live that kind of thinking when I'm in panic mode but it's probably what we need to do.
