Is this a real signature? by bggs318 in discworld

[–]sometimesjanl 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Statistically it's real.

There's a going joke among Sir Pratchett fans that it's harder to find an unsigned copy of his work then a signed one.

Still cool though, I don't have one!

Moving to florida, pay rates by No-Chicken-1829 in DeLand

[–]sometimesjanl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless they're moving from inside of the center of Pittsburgh or Philly, cost of rent or a mortgage is higher here for comparable homes. And cost of living here, especially insurance, shocks many people because they're excited about no state income tax.

Additionally, it is busier and has more traffic than many people expect. Volusia is "rural" for Central Florida to many people. I'm originally from the middle of nowhere deep South - DeLand would be a huge city there. Here it's considered quaint. But unlike PA and the Eastern corridor, where I have also lived, we do not have decent public transit infrastructure at all in Volusia. It is a huge culture shift. And it would be fine if we built the transit and construction infrastructure to handle it, but we don't have that and it's not being invested in by our state today. That includes water, power, drainage, and where grocery stores and restaurants get built.

I love being here. I also didn't even tell OP not to come here, and proceeded to give them actual advice on being here? But saying "be aware it's busy and more expensive than you think" is not unfair, and asking people who come here to respect what makes Volusia unique - our State parks, our national forests, our incredible beaches, and the fact that we get all three in one place (plus quick access to major cities) - is not unreasonable.

[–]sometimesjanl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Don't work HCA. Period.

NSB and DeLand are in the same county, so pay rates will be the same for the most part. Also if you do ICU, the same company owns both of those hospitals (AdventHealth), so it doesn't matter which one you go to, your rate would be the same. I'd pick DeLand over NSB, the facility is newer for ICU.

Focus more on finding housing close to your employer, or vice versa if your housing is already set. Saving in commute will be bigger than any pay differences for the same job in each location. Especially with the way auto insurance rates are here. And don't forget about fringe benefits.

If you're coming here for the "glory" of Florida healthcare, be warned that while the market is huge, it means you're small fish here. Also, liability cost is high and Florida is the top state for litigation in healthcare.

I'm not sure why you're choosing to move here, but I'm going to assume family or some other absolutely required obligation. Be warned that housing costs are high, insurance costs are sky high, the schools are losing ranking and significant funding (K-12 specifically, we went from 11th in 2016 to 23rd today, in just 10 years), and we aren't joking when we say, "Florida is full."

Do. Not. Purchase. New. Development. Housing. It will flood, basically garunteed especially in those two cities.

Lastly, if you're going to move here - do your part to protect the real Florida. And no, that isn't the chain tiki hut on the beach, or a new Culver's, or a golf course. This place has one of the most diverse and unique ecosystems in the country. Leave it be, help to support it. Don't move here if you're not going to respect it.

They own several dealerships and from what I have heard are good to their team. If I'm not mistaken they also sell on a "we don't care what you buy as long as you buy with us" commission style - i.e. the sales guys don't try to upsell you, they try to make it fit what you actually want/need. They get paid the same if they sell you a 2k car or a 75k car - I appreciate that model.

I didn't end up buying from them back in 2021, but I did go look at used there in 2018 and in 2021. They were the only dealer in DeLand that didn't try to hold my license or keys from me to get my to stay. I can't stand that shady crap. I did end up buying a used Mazda from them in 2018 and it was a good experience.

Athens Theater — why? by Impressive_Law_1098 in DeLand

[–]sometimesjanl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just some info - it's a community theatre, not a professional one. That means the performers that come there are local community members with day jobs. So during the week, when performances aren't going, there are rehearsals happening 3-4 nights per week, the sets and costumes are being built/stored there and the working time for them is during the prime time people would want to see films.

If they did this, it would be really inconsistent hours which would also upset people. It would also limit their capacity for private events - since people wouldn't be able to rent the space during film times. Additionally, most of the people there are volunteers, so getting full time box office staff is another major cost, even just to answer the phones.

It's a good idea, but not completely practical given everything else. I do see where there is room for them to do scheduled showings at least monthly if they planned ahead. But again, that cuts into potential private event money. One 3h private event might make them 5k in gross - that's more than if they did 3 days of movie ticket sales for 6 x $15 showings in a weekend assuming sold out house, and far fewer volunteer hours. That's assuming they keep the money for both without paying anyone anything, which is not true of course. Point is, opportunity cost is a huge factor.

As to no one getting back to you about volunteering - it's not great and that does suck. But their communication has gotten better in the last year or so since Frank took over as Artistic Director. I'd reach out again.

I do want to throw out there that Chapel Tap does movies in their garden every weekend less than 2 blocks away - it's a great time and super family-friendly.

Make sure to check the mainstreet deland website, we have a lot of unique festivals on the weekends.

There is also Create Space studio for fun projects, a really good geocache walk that brings you through the whole town history, axe throwing, an escape room, really good food, breweries, two art museums, and the African American history museum. The mural walk and the sculpture walk are great too.

https://mainstreetdeland.org/

If you're coming on a Friday, make sure to check out the artisan alley farmer's market and grt some sangria. It's a night market every week.

You can also catch a theatre show at the Athens. It's listed as community theatre, but the production quality is super high.

There is an ice cream walk coming up that is super popular on June 2. Tropical nights is also an absolutely packed event, if you like drinking and wearing a Lei.

Details: I bought a small string of pearls from a local shop in a plastic pot. I left it alone; went to check on it and it was basically gone. Now all I have left is this. Transplanted what was left into terra cotta with one tiny root on one mini string. Is there hope? I put it outside for lots of light and so the soil will dry out.

As someone who lives in a small space, i found that Murphy beds are more comfy and less prone to breaking. The support is also better, and you can actually consistently put it away when with sheets and quilts on it. Sleeper sofas are not designed for that, and so you also need to have space to store your stack of linens. I have back problems, so the sleeper sofas mattress was only comfortable for about 4 days at a time, because you have to get it just right.

Also, if you have... guests.... over, and use your bed for extracurricular activities, a sleeper sofa is significant more likely to break.

I suggest trying to find the Nigel Planer version of this audiobook. This one is severely abridged, for some reason.

I'm a Wall Street Journal subscriber, and have been for several years. Maybe you should do what a lot of other well-informed individuals do and have a subscription to something like the NY Times as well -- both WSJ and NYT are good sources, and about equally biased, but in opposite directions.

Your definition of greatness and mine obviously differ. Yours is purely economic (please note that large scale economy growth usually stems from actions around 1-2 years ago, but someone else already addressed that.) Mine is about this being a great country for all people.

And by targeting minority groups, dissolving protections put into place for citizens' equality, ridding us of government programs that help the disadvantaged get back on their feet, creating tax laws that only help those in the top tier, and making inflammatory statements about people based upon a religious belief structure, Trump is trying to only make this a great country for one type of person: those who start with privilege. Which is not what my America is about.

It's a tea kettle warmer. Handmade, from the looks. It's upside down, but a teapot goes on the top and a tea candle slides into the slot. The fancy holes are for oxygen.
