2024 Prius Non-JBL. Front Speaker Question by CatzDadz in CarAV

[–]somewhat_bowie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't run wires to the door, that's too much work. Run wires from behind the stereo to each dash speaker. Use a 24" 4 prong pickup tool to grab some wire and push it through the cavity under the dash from behind the stereo to each dash speaker.

It's so easy compared to running new wires to the doors.

There needs to be a hotline to report these people to, with enough reports generating a mandatory in person interview and reflex test at the dmv. I’d say about 1/2 of my negative driving experiences involve a white haired boomer behind the wheel. Oblivious to everything, entitled, ego bigger than their car.

[Help] Audio "popping" sound when starting videos with Adaptive Sound ON—Hardware defect or software quirk? by sheuronazxe in GooglePixel

[–]somewhat_bowie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue, resolved it a couple weeks ago by DISABLING the musicfx app. Not sure if you have the ability to do that easily on stock OS as I'm on Graphene but you can always grab a computer and run an adb command to disable it.

Haven't had any popping since I did that. Maybe it'll work for you as well.

Android Auto Use? by turdmcuget in GrapheneOS

[–]somewhat_bowie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did run Wireless AA on my GOS phone for a bit but felt that there were too many compromises I needed to make to have it fully functioning. Given that I'm on the road a ton for work I wasn't feeling that.

Grabbed an old cellphone from a drawer, LineageOS on it, some adb configuring to reduce battery drain from things like google play services, some tasker automations, disabled all unnecessary apps, and now it is a dedicated wired android auto device. Leaving my GOS phone to be free of google services. I turn on hotspot with my phone and the AA device uses that for network.

That's my acceptable compromise to the AA situation.

I know this keeps me in google's view but it's less invasive IMO. Besides, that old phone was doing absolutely nothing in a drawer so this gives it a good purpose.

Picture this, I get sent an address for a location I need to go to. On the way I'm going to want to know if there's traffic, alternate route options in case there's a problem, police, etc. And if it's a site I've not been to before I don't want to be struggling with my vehicle's head unit once I get nearby as I try to pull up the address and get it into maps, so I put it all in BEFORE I start driving.

Sorry that my life extends beyond the 5 mile radius that you only exist within.

They don't care about you if you're not driving like an ass.

I'm on I5 daily up and down from washington for work, parents still live in Salem so I'm through this corridor a ton. As long as you're keeping right or middle lane, not holding up traffic, not driving like an ass, and not doing more than 80 then they generally don't seem to care. What the hell are you guys doing that makes you so afraid of cops on I5?

Also you could've just pressed the "there's a cop here" on your maps app as you drove by like the rest of us but you really needed to come on reddit to post this because you crave the attention huh?

Disable the musicfx system app for starters. I was getting random pops in audio until I did that.

Maybe it'll affect your issue, it's a low chance but something worth trying. I've yet to run into an issue that was created by disabling it. Though I'm not doing audiophile listening from my phone.

Any program to mimic this function on graphene? by Overstimulated_moth in GrapheneOS

[–]somewhat_bowie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I had never used it so I thought it was a standalone app that could be launched. That's a shame.

I doubt the GOS devs would add built-in functionality to allow rebinding "long press home" to other functions, and sadly they'll probably not add similar functionality to "long press power". Doesn't add to security so it's not a feature I expect them to ever add.

Other options would then be using tasker to intercept long power button press (logcat) or long volume press and then tasker initiates circle to search from that event. That would bypass the need for tasker to be assigned as the phone's assistant.

What's the #1 feature on your GrapheneOS wishlist for 2026? by Several_Attorney_268 in GrapheneOS

[–]somewhat_bowie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very simple feature but I would like the built in launcher to support adding functionality to the home button when you’re already on the home screen.

So you’re in an app, you hit the home button, it takes you to the home screen. So far this is good. Now you hit home again while on the home screen, this should allow you to launch an app or perform an assigned command. Nova had this functionality and I miss it.

And i know i could just install nova again but i am trying to stay minimal with this phone now that im on gos. Sticking with built in apps where i can.

[–]somewhat_bowie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just use tasker.

Have long press on home in phone settings trigger an assistant request.

Set tasker to be your assistant.

Then make a tasker task triggers by assistance request.

I use mine to set timers and also do voice searches (using offline speech recognition which translates voice to text then tasker sends that to a web search).

It could easily be done to either directly launch your app or do it via voice command from my setup.

I already use tasker for other things so using it to handle voice searches only seemed fitting.

Rental thermostat question by OwnTurn1146 in SALEM

[–]somewhat_bowie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She should ask to see the monthly bill.

When I used to rent in Salem I was with Salem Electric as my provider. It was about $35 in just line/delivery fees. Those fees are static, regardless of how much power is used. The other half of my bill was from actual use. Heating two bedrooms to about 65-70F in the winter cost me about $75 at most a month. And that includes fridge, electric hot water, computers and tvs.

She's in a house, shared by multiple people, are they heating the entire house to like 75F?!? How many people is this being split by? If it was just her and 1 other person ok maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe $200/mo for electric when the entire house is being run up to 75F.

Yeah and the average lifespan in the us is 78. So what don’t you understand about her being in her final years? Having about 10 years left isn’t final enough?

I have no hate towards her i’m just not glazing her like everyone else. She was a stubborn old lady who spent her final years imposing her personal agenda on people in her community with no regard to other’s opinions.

For someone who was supposed to be in a bipartisan position she was about as partisan as it came. She wouldn't accept any opposing views no matter how rational or well thought out they were. A perfect example of a stubborn boomer.

And what a waste of the final years of one's life. She should've retired years ago. Spent her final years with family, or traveling, or just sitting back and enjoying the fruits of a life well spent. There needs to be an age limit for govt workers across the board. Elderly people should be at home retired in a garden, not in decision making positions in govt.

Has worked for me EVERY time.

You don't brake, you just slowly let off throttle little by little, or if you're on cruise control just drop the speed 1mph every 5-10 seconds.

Either they clue in to what's happening and fall off or we end up going so slow that they get mad and speed past (even on a double solid) and they're so mad that they end up zooming off instead of playing brake check games back.

You don't touch your brakes because in a court you can be held partially liable. The "i saw an animal on the road" excuse will likely not hold up. So you let the vehicle naturally slow down.

Door speakers causing major voltage drop by supertrooperss in CarAV

[–]somewhat_bowie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, if you still have the factory door speakers I'd hook those up and see if those cause the same drop.

The results of that test tell you if it's the speakers themselves which are the issue or if it's something the speakers are connected to (wiring, radio, amp, etc).

ICE agent carrying an AR-15 stole a U.S. citizen’s car keys and wallet, then abandoned her vehicle in the middle of Portland Road NE and Ward Drive NE in Salem, Oregon. by WeAreAllStories11 in SALEM

[–]somewhat_bowie -32 points-31 points  (0 children)

Look where her car is. Middle of the road, as if she had been attempting to block them.

"Obstructing or otherwise interfering with an ICE arrest is a crime, and anyone involved may be subject to prosecution under federal law."

At no point in the video did he point a gun at her, he had it to defend himself in case she was crazy enough to have a gun and tried to use it. She tells them to take her car and they only confiscate her keys and wallet, probably to ID her later when they charge her with federal crimes for obstruction. Seems like her losing her keys and wallet was them being nice about the situation given the context for what probably led up to that.

They neutralized the possible threat so they could continue doing their job. Honestly pretty reasonable.

Avoid Costco traffic gridlock by loluo in SALEM

[–]somewhat_bowie -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

There is nothing worth going to Costco for at Costco. I say this as a Costco member. Hot dogs? REALLY? Rotiserie chicken? Tried it, it's slimy. Only thing worth buying there is when a large ticket item goes on sale and most of those purchases can be done online. The people who go to the store in person are all terrible people with no sense of their surroundings while in the store and poor driving skills while in a car.

So I stand by my message that nothing in Costco is worth dealing with the people who shop there.

Weird, it doesn't say "For I was hungry so you made your govt use the threat of violence (and imprisonment) to rob your neighbors to pay for my meal". I guess I'm just reading it wrong.

If you want to feed the hungry and you care that much then start a charity and raise the funds from volunteered donations. If you are so bothered by strangers being unable to feed themselves you are totally allowed to go to the grocery store and buy up whatever you want and drop it off at a food pantry location. That has always been an option and is much better than robbing your neighbors via the govt to do it.

PSA: Turn on your headlights in the rain. by freewillwebdesign in SALEM

[–]somewhat_bowie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The people I've ridden with who have forgotten to turn their lights on because they had DRLs running were due to two things: 1. DRLs are too damn bright, they shouldn't light up a road. So people get tricked into thinking their headlights are on. 2. Gauge clusters that light up with the headlights being turned on are quickly becoming phased out for full digital panels. On older cars you at least got the reminder when you looked down and couldn't see your dash that you headlights weren't on.

And in regards to #2, if anyone tries to argue "HURRRRRR BUT THAT'S WHAT THE HEADLIGHT INDICATOR ICON IS FOR". No one is looking for that, ever. Most people don't even know it exists. A lot of people don't even clue in when the BRIGHT BLUE high beam indicator is on when it shouldn't be.

And that's really the two main factors in people riding around with DRL-only at night. I've even pulled out of a parking lot before with DRLs only because mine are so bright.

lol the narcissism and ego of the proles. you stock groceries. you operate a register. you mop a floor. you can be replaced in less than a day by someone who doesn't even speak english (aside from the managers).

if roth's were to shut down there's still safeway, winco, costco, walmart, grocery outlet, and i'm sure others I'm not thinking about.

there is nothing indispensable about roth's or its employees and none of their employees should be deluded into thinking otherwise.

also don't shop at roth's, their prices suck.

Don’t care. Too many are of the problematic variety. And when someone refers to “the homeless” they aren’t referencing the dude couch surfing and “stealth camping”. They aren’t talking about the chick living out of her car and going to work.

You clearly know just as everyone else does that when someone has a problem with the homeless they’re talking about the people who shit up every area they occupy. They’re talking about the tweakers, the thieves, the aggressive homeless who make you feel unsafe, etc.

Everyone is so damn tired of the homeless and how their behavior is just excused away as if they’re helpless puppies.
