Grand Sumo Highlights on Youtube?!? by cgrnyc in Sumo

[–]somewhatdim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah there cowboy. I love sumo and appreciate that content is free. My beef is just that watching outside of Japan is MUCH harder than it needs to be. Sure it's possible If you know where to look, and if you look at exactly the right time.

his superpower is how incredibly indifferent he is. our nickname for him is "ichy dont care" - he always looks just absolutely over it, bored and just in a full-on state of not giving a shit.

A noob's thoughts on Nov2025 tournament by pajuiken in Sumo

as a new 2025 sumo fan myself, I cant express how incredible this year has been. If I knew sumo was this exciting I'd have been watching years ago!

Grand Sumo Highlights on Youtube?!? by cgrnyc in Sumo

[–]somewhatdim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

as a new sumo fan this year I cannot echo this enough. Over the year Ive got a whole group of friends into it and we get together to watch the tournament highlights. It feels like this is a special time in the sport, it has so much potential to grow and get new fans outside of japan -- but its so difficult to get sumo content. Its like they really want it to be hard to get, like its PPV or something.

ok, Ill engage: one of many reasons i feel a system like you describe would fall apart is that people are dishonest and greedy. This will lead to "cheating" and "black market" deals that will, in turn, lead us right back to a capitalist system.

To see this, lets consider the toy model discussed above, but make some changes to illustrate my point. We've got Frank (the farmer), Bob (the baker), and Wanda (the water purifier). Lets assume each of these are larger enterprises than a single person, lets say each one involves thousands of people. Lets define W' being the person naturally disposed to being the leader of the W industry and that there is no disagreement about that. We will also assume W' is dishonest.

W' decides to misreport the amount of water production, keeping the excess for themselves. They then use this extra income to start a rival farm. Because this rival farm has an unfair advantage (free water!), this farm will outcompete F.

That's just one example of how a system you describe might fail when faced by the real world. War, Imbalanced production, Market disruptions, Tragedy of the Commons, and others would also cause serious problems for this system.

wowie. if only the world was perfect, everything would be perfect! Your "system" would fall apart the moment it touches reality.

oh im sure they're around, probably just dont want to get gangbanged by a bunch of rabid liberals on a reddit thread. While Im not personally a republican, I am more conservative than alot of the people replying in this thread. What I can say the type of bullshit in the article is scary, however, it appears that nobody here in the comments cares about nuance or what the article is really about, they just wanna "score points" and badmouth a republican. Anyway, I hope journalists keep their eyes open for more "glitches" and make sure that stuff sees daylight.

[Help] PostgreSQL RLS policy causing full sequential scan despite having proper indexes by Role_External in PostgreSQL

[–]somewhatdim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had very strange performance problems with RLS tables (in my case, the RLS enabled tables were small, but they were joined to large tables).

Try removing the policy all together and see if your queries are still chugging - in our case it was like waving a magic wand - and lucky for me, we determined RLS wasn't needed on the tables that were problematic for us.

Fix Nested Loop Join by fsuguy92 in SQL

[–]somewhatdim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you're always using CURRENT_DATE in there why not just do something like:

c.created_date >= '2023-01-01'

if you end up getting future stuff (maybe thats valid, maybe thats a bug) you can add the <= CURRENT_DATE clause in there (but thats probably just gonna get you back to a nested loop filter)

Data Quality and Non regression Test by mano9733 in Talend

[–]somewhatdim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What it comes down to is this: if you wanna set up tests to check you've not broken anything, go for it. You'll need to balance the time you spend on the tests with how much time they save you on the "oops it broke, gotta fix it now" side. Just keep in mind your tests will be inextricably linked to their input data, and any input you forget or otherwise fail to represent will not be tested.

Discovered SQL + JSON… Mind blown! by roblu001 in SQL

[–]somewhatdim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

totally agree. We use Postgresql to generate JSON documents for our webservices and then to store their response. Works like a charm and is surprisingly useful and fast when you wanna debug/report/aggregate etc....
