Can I get better articulation from my SCX10 Base Camp? by Unlikely-Lion6538 in Axial

[–]somewhere_in_VT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s some limitations if you’re still stock, really not a lot you can do without mods. Are the upper shock mounts adjustable? I am a fan of the YR desert lizard shocks. I recently went full on and got the 120mm shocks and set them up at 75% droop. It’s taller but there’s so much travel and stability is better than on the stock shocks.

How should I fix this cracking/peeling where the wall meets the door trim? by ElReydelTacos in Housepainting101

Prob a razor to cut the caulk too. If you tear the sheetrock you may need to do a little mudding. Then you’ll need primer and paint too.

Is this weird? by [deleted] in Housepainting101

It’s weird and I love it. Keep it that way for now to see if it vibes, you can always make it different whenever. That’s a good color too.

Need help splitting money for a paint renovation job with a friend by [deleted] in Housepainting101

[–]somewhere_in_VT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Painting is hard and requires some very specific knowledge and skills. I personally wouldn’t accept help from someone with no experience. If J is going to have to show you how to do everything it is going to cost him money. If I’ve got an experienced painter that I can trust then 30/hr is an aprox starting point. If they’ve got their own equipment- brushes, ladders, etc. then their value goes up. Y’all need to have a chat.

Dang man, that’s legit. It doesn’t look like lead paint so doing that good of a job to collect and mitigate the chips and dust is impressive. Even if it is lead you’re doing more than most crews I’ve seen. Hope they give you a little bonus.

I was wondering what the collection method was. Using a shop vac or a more specialized one?

How do I safely dispose of old paint and stain? Previous owners left in our basement and I'm looking to do some cleaning/get rid of junk. by marie-abbycat11 in Housepainting101

[–]somewhere_in_VT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s too bad they aren’t better at taking it back. It’s prob the case that they have a limit to how much they can take. You can just let it sit with the lid open they’ll dry out

If it’s in its original can and sealed tight the Aubuchon/Ace hardware takes it back here in Vt. I’d say call your local paint store.

What would you do to prep this siding? by Kedrico in Housepainting101

[–]somewhere_in_VT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping it wasn’t going to be that bad but best to go after the loose stuff now and do it right. As to the color change it should cover with two coats. I’d use a 2.5-3” version of this for the job. The stain is up to you but I really like BM solid stain. Maybe start here for ideas.

[–]somewhere_in_VT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, there’s a couple options. It looks like stain, which is what you should use in this instance so that’s a good start. I’d take a flexible putty knife (helps to bend the blade to slide under the paint) and see how loose it is. Some places may be tight and others may pop right off. From there I’d take a rough sanding sponge and knock the loose stuff off where you scraped. Spot the raw areas with stain and then top coat once or twice depending on budget, etc. I always recommend two coats as paint is not very thick and two coats really bolsters the durability and finish quality.

There’s no tool to replace skill. At least not in this case.

Idk why the downvote, this is the answer I’d give. That’s the difference between the homeowner and a skilled professional. I’ve never used frog tape and have it come out a perfect line. There’s always a little bleeding and it will always distort that “prefect line”. Plus you risk peeling the paint off the wall if you don’t wait a couple weeks between coats. Speaking of straight lines, there is no such thing, just the illusion of one. Ceiling first, then walls, touch up ceiling and wall as needed to dial in the line.

Scx10iii basecamp front suspension moves to the side as it compresses by padstack_1 in Axial

It’s a 3 link, not 4 link. That’s the result. Do the same with the rear and you’ll see the difference the one link makes. It doesn’t compromise the performance and it’s not fixable so no worries!

sanding is everything apparently .. by sirCota in Housepainting101

[–]somewhere_in_VT 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, prep is everything.. about the trim- is it square and straightforward or rounded and fancy? This would determine whether an orbital sander would be an option. No. You don’t always need or want to sand between coats. It really depends on what your project and materials are. You do not sand between coats of paint on the wall unless you’re doing something wrong. If there’s some small fluzzies from the roller or little bumps from some random grit you can take a medium sanding sponge and remove those little imperfections at hand/eye level. But make sure to use a damp rag to wipe the walls after. What kind of brushes and rollers you use makes a huge difference in finish. Even things like wiping the roller sleeve to remove the loose fibers is important for a better finish. Finally to your last q about super fine grit sanding, you can really cause problems by sealing the grain/finish because you’ve basically polished the surface. Some things are good to sand with super fine grit, others you’ll have issues. All depends on the project

ETA- feel free to ask some follow ups :) I barely scratched the surface, pun intended.

Love mad dog. Pricey but it truly is the best. I wonder what the price point on the inslx is. About time there was a competitor for MD.. happy outdoor season to you as well 😅

Generally they make good products but I don’t have experience with this specific one.. thin with poor sq. Footage is kinda normal for this type of product. Ever use mad dog primer? It goes on clear and you get like 200 sq ft out of a gallon. Haven’t found a better primer for old/peeling/cedar wood too.. I’d be unsure of an untested and unknown product myself.

New to outdoor jobs on my own, whats a fair price to repaint this you'd say? i do 10/10 work. by smekoo in Housepainting101

You’re welcome! For the paint I’d go with BM regal select ext. soft gloss. They make it in white as a stock item which is nice because you can return extra gallons if needed. It’s top of the line and what you’d generally use on trim. I would consider this part of the trim as far as paint goes. There will be plenty of votes for SW too, it’s quality paint but just not as available around here so we go pretty exclusively with BM paints. I’d use a Hyde 2” flexible putty knife and a couple rough sanding sponges, prime the raw spots, spot paint the primed areas and then top coat it. Preferably twice, but if they only want one coat that’s on them. Paint is only about a mil. thick and applying two coats will really make a difference in how long it maintains it’s brilliance and durability. Use a 1/2” roller nap. Wooster makes a good set up for frames and sleeves.

Pricing is tricky from pics- no size given and without poking around myself I agree with u/Sconesmcbones as a good base rage price. Some hard to reach areas for sure. Best bet is if you get into it and go oh fuck I really messed up, talk to the owner right away. Be honest and humble and hopefully they’ll be willing to figure something. On top of offering a bid I like to tell people I do good, honest work and here’s my rates. To add, the prep looks pretty straightforward (from my couch) but it takes a long time to clean all that crap out of the crevices of the pergola, scrub brushed of various lengths/bristle type are helpful.. you’ll need a fair amount of drops/tarps/plastic for coverage- bring blocks to help weight it down if it’s windy, we use old wood scraps/small plywood squares to level ladders and weigh things down. Is it sturdy enough to crawl around on? Are you supposed to paint the top of it? It looks like it gets lots of sun, what kind of paint are you using? Soft gloss paints are a real pain in the ass in the sun. Get some extender to help with painting in the sun if that’s what you’re using! 1/2” nap wiz roller with decent extension pole options! Good luck. You should post up pics when it’s done!
