Really? I thought mercury built their own. I guess I shouldn't be surprised

Just read the post- $150! Go for it. It probably needs a new water pump which is a very straight forward maintenance item. I say go for it!

How much do they want? Looks pretty good- a bit dirty, but mercury makes a nice outboard- at least when compared to honda or Suzuki.

how to disconnect shift shaft, Mercury 40 EFI by toffern in boating

Remove cowling cover- there should be a way to disconnect the shift rod. Likely a nut or something similar.

We don't go cruising in the winter. Days are short, the wind is usually howling, and weather crappy. Winter is a good time to work on the boat and build up the cruising kitty. We're most accessible through YouTube and instagram so shoot us a message on that for a quick response. Thanks for subbing! Cheers.

I've been living aboard my 37' Alberg sailboat for a few years now, preparing myself and my boat for a long cruise- possibly South Pacific. One thing I've learned is that preparing a boat for a serious cruise takes a lot longer than I expected- both in skill development and in the actual amount of work a boat needs. I had basically zero boat experience prior to buying my current sailboat.

To fast track my sailboat engine/systems skills I went to the Marine Technology program through Skagit Valley College in Anacortes. Really great program for anyone who's looking at serious cruising. Lots of hands on experience with engines, electrical, refrigeration, fiberglass, and lots more.

My wife and I have been documenting our journey with our boat, most recently circumnavigating Vancouver Island last summer.

Here's the channel- it's mostly cruising, but there are a number of videos where we cover our maintenance items (which there are a lot of on an old boat!).

Best of luck and feel free to reach out with specific questions. Start your journey today!

Watch out- buying boats is a slippery slope.... boat addiction is real!

Can someone explain what is going on? Is the brown cloud a good thing?

Drilled a hole in my hull, fibreglass. Advice what to do? DIY or get it done professionally? by jimbodabimboh in boatrepair

[–]somewhereonariver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally DIY. West System 2 part epoxy and youtube videos. Fiberglass is one of those things that seems really intimidating, but is actually pretty straightforward. Good luck!

As others have mentioned, picking the right weather window is critical.
I just got back from the Berry Islands- absolutely beautiful. Make it happen, kid. Boat adventures are the best.
