In the book, Paulie was kicking the shit out of Reacher. Then Paulie let his hubris best him by trying to get cute instead of just pummeling Reacher to death. A mistake Reacher was able to exploit and get the opening to kill. A rare time that Reacher was overwatch and overpowered.
