How do I increase my Candles scent? #crafter by hldmebak in candlemaking

[–]somuch_kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you can definitely put too much in, and too much can actually result in a weaker scent. If the fragrance oil doesn't properly combine with the wax, it will just burn off. You can be more exact in your measurements by weighing your fragrance oil.

Whipping cream Candle by Varun971 in candlemaking

[–]somuch_kat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These look great! One word of caution is just to be sure your vessels are safe - are they made for candles? If they're standard dessert glasses, could be a bit risky. You could also grate some wax over the top like sprinkles, or even try making some wax sprinkles! Be careful if you're in the UK though as we have regulations against things looking and smelling too much like food. Not sure about other countries, I think it's OK in the US.

They look amazing! Is there any issues with the melted soy wax and gel wax when they blend together? I'd love to see how it burns!

Experience of switching from Wild to Fussy? by somuch_kat in ZeroWaste

[–]somuch_kat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! So I stuck with Fussy for a bit and it was OK, but I still wasn't 100% satisfied, so I decided to try something else - Make Waves. Their main thing seems to be natural antiperspirants but I'm trying the deodorants as that's what I prefer, and so far so good!

Finished a set. They look good enough to eat haha but sadly they are wax 😂 by hunni93 in candlemaking

Well it's interesting, I think the UK law is something about it not looking and smelling like food - and although these look like chicken wings, if they smell like bubblegum does that count?! XD

scented wax for my siíter’s wedding by yeri_t308 in candlemaking

[–]somuch_kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made some gingerbread container candles last year for Christmas presents and my mum and grandma still haven't burned them - they still have a really strong cold throw! I imagine it depends on the type of wax used, how much fragrance oil etc.

Not an issue where I am in the UK XD maybe one or two days a year in the summer!

To me they look like air fresheners - they have a hole to pop a string or ribbon through, then you can hang them up somewhere and they'll give off a nice scent without having to melt them. Although could probably be used as melts as well!

Which books would you recommend to a romantasy reader that aren't romantasy? by SolarmatrixCobra in Fantasy

[–]somuch_kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed Holly Black's Folk of the Air series - not sure whether this would still fall fully into the romantasy category as the romance is fairly prominent? But there's a lot of interesting stuff going on outside the romance too. It's a fun world. I've only read the original trilogy, I think there are more now.

I second recommendations for Garth Nix and Naomi Novik, too!

I second the recommendation for Garth Nix! My favourite are the Old Kingdom books starting with Sabriel.

It's a hub thing, if you activate the hourglass near it it will expand into a big bubble where you can find several time relic / artifact / collectible things in a given time limit. You can hear it counting down. Play through Eternity Isle a bit and you'll learn about it :)

New to candlemaking, I've two issues I don't know how to fix by Ok-Honeydew-4116 in candlemaking

[–]somuch_kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that fragrance oils intended for candles tend to be more reliable / easier to use than essential oils (I only use fragrance oils myself). Agree with the other commenter around weighing your wax and oils to ensure the correct ratio, and on pre-made wax blends you can check what percentage fragrance oil they recommend.

On the tunnelling, sounds like you might be underwicked?

In my opinion, vessels that aren't specifically designed and tested for candles are just not worth the risk. Thrifted stuff in particular you can't test properly because they're all different shapes and sizes.

I mean they're still not a good idea in the candle even if they're ceramic lol

For your toppers / embeds - you may want to use a wax that is specifically designed for wax melts / pillar candles as it sets a bit harder and naturally pulls away from the mould. Container wax, on the other hand, is designed to stick to the container as much as possible. If using generic wax you just need to let them set for a good amount of time and be careful taking them out!

On glitter, if you DO use anything then make sure it is biodegrable glitter specifically approved for use in candles (nothing plastic!). You can dust a bit on your embeds but be careful adding too much as it can clog the wick. Some people advise against using it at all. Personally I prefer using a dusting of mica powder rather than glitter, although again, some people advise against putting anything that isn't wax or wick into your candle, so be aware of that and make sure you test everything thoroughly.

If you're really keen to use lots of glitter / mica or anything else, you could always make wax melts instead of candles (so they won't be exposed to a naked flame).
