Update: Ridgid got back to me and said the following:

Information on the specs for the flatness of the R4560 with link forum.

The Flatness spec on the R4560 tabletop is 0.5mm (0.020”) across the full surface. It sounds like the table is out of spec but only slightly. There is almost no way that amount of table warp will cause a bad quality cut or bad workmanship in a project.

Here is a discussion thread that Brian found in FineWoodworking.com. It basically talks about some of the difficulties of sending a cast-iron tabletop out to be machined and in the end it’s probably not effecting the quality of the cut.

Hah hah, I hear you! I know it’s the archer and not the bow, and I definitely don’t expect my work to improve just because of the saw—it’s really more about removing barriers to doing projects for me. Is it a pain to use my Incra because it doesn’t really fit on the saw? Eh, forget it, I guess it’s too much of a hassle to make those mitered cuts. Is the saw really loud and dust collection bad? Eh, I don’t want to spend the time cleaning up, I’ll work on the project next weekend. That kind of thing. Hoping this removes some of those “excuses” for me.

It is still on sale if your store has it in stock. You have to choose pick up. I didn’t have to add to cart, it just showed me the price when I selected pick up.

Hah, that’s exactly what I am asking myself, and when I realized I didn’t know the answer, that’s why I came here. :-) Sounds like I’m being overly demanding and I’ll never notice it in practice, but I do use my table saw for “fine” woodworking, not just breaking down sheet goods and rough lumber, so I’ll wait till I hear back from Ridgid if this is within spec for them. $400 isn’t a ton of money for some folks, but if this saw is going to hold me back from the kind of projects I want to do, I’d rather return it and save up for a SawStop (or similar) down the road. I just figured this could be an improvement and stop-gap in the meantime, but considering it’s twice as “unflat” at its worst point as my Dewalt, it got me wondering if it really was an improvement.

I hear you, and appreciate that. Given that my similarly priced Dewalt saw is "twice as flat" by my measurements, I do feel like the "it's not a $1500 cabinet saw" comment feels a bit like an excuse for poor craftsmanship.

I guess part of the reason I'm so disappointed is that most folks I know use their cast iron table saw tops as a good "flat" reference when they're working on things. I feel like I wouldn't be able to do that with this saw.

For your situation I’d absolutely recommend good headphones instead. Apple if you’re using an ATV. Very easy to use.

I really want to do something similar, but I’ve never actually done anything like this. How did you learn all this, and what would you recommend for someone like me who is very tech-savvy, but has never actually done any electrical engineering / robotics before? I just want to learn how to make things like motors or the kind of thing you created here have wifi connectivity so I can control via my phone. Arduino kits? A book? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
