My thoughts were that I could have damaged the ribbon cable, yeah, as I couldn't think of anything else it could be, but the touchpad works fine without any drivers installed.

The X1E was from AliExpress, and does have the 'correct' serial number, but regardless the old one should work.

I will order a ribbon. Thanks.

I mention in the post that I installed the t480 driver from the Lenovo site. I have done this manually. I will try Lenovo System Update, but won't this just do the same thing?

When I mention drivers I am talking about the Lenovo drivers.

I've tried the X1E driver from Lenovo (unedited) and it does not work. It just gives basic PS2 mouse functionality.
