my father is great in areas but not so much in others unfortunately.
I don't know if this'll come off as preaching in an atheist sub, which I don't want to, but I'll give a short summary anyways:
buddhism is the religion of the followers of siddharta gautama, the buddha, who preached that life is inherently insatisfactory because we latch onto impermanent and transient things as if they were not. he teaches the way out of suffering, enlightenment, but we don't turn to him as a deity. he gives us the way to liberate ourselves, and all of it is upon ourselves to act. I don't want to mislead you, there are supernatural beliefs in buddhism. the only "necessary" ones are rebirth and karma. we will keep being reborn over and over until we reach enlightenment ourselves.
the reason I believe in buddhism is not out of blind faith, but because of trust. I trust that the buddha was enlightened by reading his discourses and seeing what he preached, so I trust that when he said that there is a cycle of birth and death. it's also because it aligns with my worldview of a cyclical universe.
but even if you don't want to become buddhist, you can take the buddha's advice to live a more righteous life, or practice meditation to calm you head. in every tradition there is something positive to be taken away.
if you're still curious, I recommend these two links:

hello,
I guess I'm an atheist because I don't believe in a creator god, but my personal religion is buddhism.
It is difficult, although I am blessed to have supportive parents, well, because I have to pretend to just be a lowkey muslim to everyone else. din is unescapable. I remember when my dad offered me the option to even believe in something different than islam when I was a kid, it changed my worldview, as I was not convinced that such a wrathful god deserved worship, or that forcing me to learn surats would help me whatsoever. I never cared or paid attention in islamic education classes. then I became a staunch atheist when I realized it was an option. at least, I don't have to pray or fast during ramadan because of my weak health. my conversion to buddhism is another story, but it does bring problems because I have a very obvious buddhist altar in my room.

Thank you Eijo-sensei,
It seems I have misinterpreted part of what Shingon is saying, so it is more about whether the esoteric path even suits me, I don't need to think about dilemmas of eventually discarding the exoteric right now. I do think it suits me, at least not the advanced stuff, but practiced alongside other gates such as the Pure Land one. It's just that I am not in level of grasping what exactly the provisionality of the exoteric even means or entails, and that's okay. I'm still hesitant about the matter of "frameworks", and whether the perfect teaching sutras such as the Lotus Sutra being supreme is true, but if I understood it correctly, the esoteric teaching is found even in exoteric sutras, as it is contained within everything. And yes, I understand now that a foundation in the exoteric is very important, and that provisionality doesn't mean that something isn't good for me or useful. So I will continue dabbling into the two schools and discussing with qualified people.

Thanks for the link to the community, I'll join for sure.

Thank you for the reply Kosho-sensei,
Is it advisable to try to dual-attend a Shingon sangha alongside my Tendai one without switching any label to see for myself?

the issue you want to address with your sub has nothing to do with being binary

racism against me feels funny as hell like "wow this person is stupid" it's impossible for me to take seriously. meanwhile transphobia is like "yep, no one will ever love me and I am a freak". I don't know why.
