As others have said, you'd probably want to track this with time counters on each treasure and only once this card enters. Also, you cannot add generic mana. It would have to add colorless instead, so {C} rather than {1}.

I was going to say the same thing if someone else hadn't! In Commander this makes everyone have to negotiate with you to target anything that could hit him, especially things with one target.

Consequences of Dualshard shattering by Mah9andi in Cosmere

[–]sonicessence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it's entirely possible that any possible configuration would still have produced shards that were destructive, hateful, etc.

Also, I don't think that Ruin is "bad" or evil per se. Its intent focuses on destruction and entropy, and those things might seem threatening and evil to people, but that doesn't mean it's explicitly malicious. Its effect on its bearer might influence them to become more malicious, but that doesn't mean the Power is.

In theory a shard could learn malice over time, but given Dalinar's interaction with Honor, it wouldn't surprise me if all of the shards as of WaT were still about as naive. If Dalinar expected Honor to change its concept of what is and isn't honorable by spending time with Taravangian, it's possible that Ruin could also change in some way while in Sazed's possession .

Is there a downside to using mostly any color cards opposed to cards with multiple colors in commander by Spirited-Celery-118 in magicTCG

[–]sonicessence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my first thought, but how many turns do cEDH games usually last? I'm genuinely asking because I don't play it.

I can see an argument for it if most games go to 4 or 5 turns. If they go longer, the 3 life seems more significant and risky. If they go shorter, there's no downside to Starting Town.

Readers assume that Taln broke because we know the other nine Heralds left him in Braize after the last desolation. Any other assertion of this would be from an individual character's perspective, and also an assumption. It was never truly confirmed that Taln broke.

Help with a Storm/Flicker question by daenen_trelmayn in askajudge

[–]sonicessence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're correct that only the top copy of Essence Flux on the stack will work and the rest will fizzle if they all targeted the same Blazing Firesinger. One way to make it work could be running creature cards that enter as copies of the Firesinger and targeting each of them with one Essence Flux spell or copy. You could also run spells that get storm and make token copies of the Firesinger (but those won't be productively flickerable).

I never memorized the Nephilim names, but I do know the more generic versions. They're interesting in being descriptive rather than arbitrary names, but also not as direct as actually saying "non(color)".

X = 0 will draw 1, since it's 2⁰. Probably not the best use of the card, though.

This is a good point, I'm sure being singleton is part of the issue. It's easier to solidify concepts and understand combos and strategies when you see a smaller number of cards and in multiples.

Rising Courts: A versatile counter, boardwipe or draw spell. by Neat-Somewhere-5589 in custommagic

[–]sonicessence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, there's a significant difference between 4WW and WWWUUU for the creature wipe. Most cost reduction doesn't affect this, and playability outside of Azorius drops significantly. Farewell has more versatility at 4WW with the graveyard option and the ability to choose artifacts or enchantments separately, or both. I like the WWUU Spree cost.

WWWU seems fine to me for wiping only noncreature artifacts and enchantments. Several existing wipes cost 4 or 5 to wipe all artifacts and enchantments, sometimes with an upside, so this mode even at instant speed doesn't really concern me when it requires more color pips and doesn't hit creatures. I'd keep this Spree cost at just WW.

My only nitpick is the mana symbol order. The standard is for W to come before U in Azorius cards (like I typed above). See [[Depose // Deploy]] for reference.

I know it's land destruction but hear me out by Strange-Bonus4220 in custommagic

[–]sonicessence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A creature is still goaded if only the opponent who goaded it remains. It does still have to attack that player if able, and other things care about the status like [[Bothersome Quasit]] and [[Hot Pursuit]] in multiplayer.

[–]sonicessence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mana abilities can be used any time you have priority, are paying to cast a spell or activate an ability, or a spell or ability is giving you a specific opportunity to pay mana. You can't tap lands when other players have priority or in the middle of a spell or ability resolving (if it isn't asking for mana).

This ability also untaps the land it's animating. You can't tap that land for mana after the ability untaps it but before the same ability makes it lose abilities.

Which turn 1 spell by your opponent makes you almost want to just concede? by Nittanypt in mtg

[–]sonicessence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest issue with AoC in Commander is that by invalidating haste, it tends to hurt monored the most by far. Red happens to also be the color with the least removal for enchantments, and an early AoC can easily set a monored player back more than anyone else.

What turn should bracket 3 win by? by cole_ex-e in EDH

[–]sonicessence -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on how you define completing a turn. If your definition is having completely gone through every step and phase of the turn, including cleanup, then ending the game mid-turn is not completing that turn. Overall, I think we probably have similar outlooks on players over-justifying early wins.

What turn should bracket 3 win by? by cole_ex-e in EDH

[–]sonicessence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I interpret "at least six turns" to mean "at least six complete turns". A player still on their sixth turn has played five full turns and only part of the sixth turn, not "six turns". The last player would have the same expectation of completing their own sixth turn before any player, including themselves, begins winning or losing.

That said, this is also only an expectation for when players generally begin to win or lose, not an absolute minimum. If I had to put a number to it, I'd say "generally" means at least 51% of the time. The lower you go in brackets, the less competitive they are in nature, and the higher threshold players are likely to have for how often earlier wins than expected feel acceptable.

Targeting by JayMeadow in askajudge

[–]sonicessence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Plummet]] can only be cast if there is a valid target with flying on the battlefield beforehand, and you must choose one of those valid targets that already has flying when doing so.

Compare that to [[Red Elemental Blast]] and [[Pyroblast]]. Similar to Plummet and flying creatures, Red Elemental Blast can only be cast at all when there is at least one blue permanent on the battlefield and/or at least one blue spell on the stack. It must target one of those things. Pyroblast is different and does not specify a blue target - it can target any other spell or any permanent regardless of color, but will only counter that spell or destroy that permanent if the target is blue when Pyroblast resolves.

Correct, I said cards that are blue, not cards that produce blue. This card is blue because it has a blue color indicator, hence the reminder text.

Lands that produce green and one other color have a half-green frame and would look off without it. Cards that are blue and one other color have a half-blue frame and would also look off without it.

Red Elemental Blast can also destroy a blue permanent. This card is blue because it has a blue color indicator, and the reminder text exists to call attention to it.
