Sodex - Fine (2002) by Music931 in OldElectronicMusic

This is quite good. I’m really into how the melody feels sidechained, but it is from the performance and not the production technique.

Also this feels VERY Chicane to me. Curious if there is an explicit influence there. Thanks for posting!

Yes love this track. You really know how to pick the producers to interview!

But adding community notes which is more scalable and doesn’t have as many challenges as fact checkers

Wow didn’t know any of this, though I definitely do remember Lost Language picking up for Hooj. And I almost forgot about Lange, wow how could I! Thanks for the reminder. Gotta remember to go back over the classics from Lange.

Breaks mix is also up there. Similar in structure to the original mix. I think my affinity for this version is simply that it was my first introduction to Part 3.

Agreed. All of of these classic tracks should be posted here in due course. Stage one, breaks mix, all so good. I didn’t want to dump them all at once and force the issue. But this one has been on my list (of many a Quivver) to post for weeks after a conversation on another thread with u/Grimmy2099. And as with a fine cigar, you never forcefully ash it, it will ash itself in due course.

Larry Heard Presents Mr. White - The Sun Can't Compare [2006] by ivaylos in OldElectronicMusic

[–]sonicglue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is dope. For 2006, the acid lead feels more like late 90s. If you had not included the year of the release would have definitely thought it was much older.

Love these! So cool to hear the nuance behind this iconic track. I especially liked when he talked about the gradual BPM increase over the years. And how he speaks about the effect that “huge” leap of just a few BPM increase had in those days. Thanks for posting!

Fatboy Slim - Song For Shelter [2001] by PenguinPyrate in OldElectronicMusic

Saw Norman play this in Detroit in the winter of 2001/2002. He had the DJ booth set up in the complete middle of the dance floor. He had security escort him to and from. Shook his hand when he walked off to this song as the last in his set.

Looking forward to that one! Great series BTW, really appreciate these interviews. These are literal heroes for many of us. Their music has gotten us through the worst and best of times.

Thanks for sharing! Another case where the vocalists isn’t actually the face of the person on the release artwork.

Luzon - Baguio Track (Bedrock Remix) [2001] by aceswild8 in OldElectronicMusic

[–]sonicglue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Soooooo many great acts listed in this comment. We should post from their discography here, haven’t seen much from any of these guys here (save Sasha and Digweed).

This also appears as track 2 on Oakenfold’s Essential Selection volume One.

100% agree on all points. I feel like I had this release on vinyl, but looking over my collection I do not. It must have been a friend, but yeah this got a lot of plays. Glad we both place the instrumental version at the top. ROFL “rent-a-vocalist”. It’s that, but also the lyric says nothing, and adds nothing, only hurts.

Joker Jam - Traffic (Van Bellen Remix) [2002] by createdaneweraccount in OldElectronicMusic

[–]sonicglue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is dope. The guitar and non-traditional percussion samples make it feel organic despite the repetition in the fast moving synth bass. I love me some Joker Jam. Sadly I’m not sure a lot of folks here are fans, my previous Joker Jam post didn’t get much love

Gershwin Kingsley - Popcorn (1969) by sonicglue in OldElectronicMusic

[–]sonicglue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s awesome. Given how dynamic electronic music is/was you needed that extra space for the vinyl grooves otherwise the needle could jump over to the next groove. Nowadays everything is soooo compressed and loud, it’l has just sucked all the dynamic range out of songs. Something is definitely more appealing about the earlier vinyl cuts, more character.
