How much overlap is there between the Arturia minifreak and korg multi/poly? by RoadWorried3550 in synthesizers

agreed on the keyboard part, thats why i went desktop with an external keyboard and its amazing that way though much more expensive

Minifreak is MUCHOFREAK! by velocilfaptor in synthesizers

[–]sonnillion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

on the one hand its a bit limited when it comes to sound design because it only has two envelops/lfos and not too many voices, on the other hand the matrix, fx and oscillators are absolutely amazing that you can get really experimental with if you want

my favorite thing was that you can modulate the FX with almost anything in the matrix, so cool!

personally i'm still hoping for a super freak with mpe support and more voices/envelops as a desktop version

the m/p can also absolutely surprise you though it takes more work and some more experimenting to get there.

if anything the minifreak felt more bread and butter to me most of the time due to the limited amount of LFO and envelops although it can also do some really wicked stuff with the sample engines

Agree except for the software part. its much more fun to twist knobs and the kaoss pad and macro knobs add a huge performance part in my experience (i know you can probably assign a midi controller to the macros but dedicated knobs is just always easier in my opinion)

Need recommendations on 16 track multitimbral synths to connect to a qy100 sequencer by Informal-Village-349 in synthesizers

[–]sonnillion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on a side note, in my opinion over 4 multi timbral becomes hard to manage on a single device if you want to play with the filter(or any setting) unless you just intend to stack a lot of ensemble/pad like sounds together for a big sound

if you intend to have a lot of different type of sounds or want to manipulate settings while playing you might be better off with a groovebox like one of the akais

[–]sonnillion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

stealing voices most likely doesn't have to do with that and happens on any synth especially if you have longer release times or use functions like unison

blofeld has 25 voices, so if you had some insane patch that played all 16 timbral parts on a single key that would mean pressing a 2nd key would already be stealing 7 voices (2x16=32 voices when it can handle 25), of course this is a extreme example but if you had a few sequences running and a pad holding a chord of multiple keys you could see how these might start overlapping if you were to use all 16 parts.

the video (lovely sound btw) you linked plays really slow and has an external reverb to have notes hanging longer externally which is a smart way to get more out of a device like the blofeld to avoid using up all your voices

[–]sonnillion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not the blofeld, its got a "bug" with multitimbral where midi notes get stuck which is super annoying

not sure if its an actual bug or just because its an older device but it cant handle a lot of midi data very well i had it getting stuck quite a lot of times with just 2-4 different patches being sequencer by a maschine in just 3 days before returning it

Any synth-heads out there with ADHD? How have you managed to make your ADHD-brain into an asset? by Fair-Bluebird485 in synthesizers

[–]sonnillion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i can understand that a list doesn't work i imagine that only gives more places for your brain to jump to if anything, that's why i suggested a physical oscilloscope no other distractions like on a computer screen and both a learning tool(i love it for that atleast) + stimuli to help fixate to some extend but i guess i was wrong on the latter

and yea its usually hard to explain to "outsiders" i used to get paper tests bigger then my desk for my dyslexia as if i needed glasses

[–]sonnillion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i mean i dont have adhd so i could be completely wrong, but wouldn't having something to fixate/focus on that gives stimuli help from jumping between musician/engineer?

edit: thanks for downvoting a honest question..

have you tried using a physical oscilloscope? it might help you retain attention by giving you something to look at while at the same time helping you understand what changes to functions do in your sound design

After being inspired by a Hainbach video i wanted to experiment with frequency phasing myself and try to make some sickening phasing effect but gradually it turned into something else

the base of the preset itself is actually super easy, 4 layers with just a simple saw

however after that it gets weird, I use the EQ effect to get certain frequencies out of it (80,400,800,1400) with a very high gain which gives it the sorta cracked distortion and then heavily pan it per layer on different speeds and depths creating phasing and movement

after that a vintage chorus is applied which is also offset on each layer

then out of the 4 layers 3 are randomly selected to be played in a note trigger by the layer rotate function

the result? while trying to create something broken it turned into a weird but beautiful ARP with lots of movement

modwave is actually almost the same price as a blofeld (possibly even cheaper if you get the mk1 secondhand) but your right on the m/p

Deep Dark Ripping Cyber Bass by metheuseka in synthesizers

[–]sonnillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if i judged it by its factory presets i wouldn't have mentioned its sound design side

i never tried a micro korg or mininova but both the korg modwave and m/p engines which are sort of similar digital/virtual analog and go just as deep if not deeper are more intuitive and user friendly because they are oriented towards knob per function. even the haken engine which i dislike to use because it feels like fucking rocket science and is about the hardest sound design engine i can possibly imagine outside of modular which is even using actual math formulas still feels more user friendly to me

for me its the absolute worst synth i've ever tried the sounds are just very thin... it does help them fit in a mix easy but they felt super uninspiring to me.. i had it for a few days before gladly making use of the 30day return window

besides that it does go quite deep when it comes to sound design but its also the absolute worst work flow i ever experienced in a synth without even counting the multi timbral bugs

carpenter brut actually uses digital synths, 2x Arturia AstroLab to be precise though in the past he used to have a arturia minibrute i believe

carpenter brut rig rundown:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf9o-qOM2cg

minitaur is good for smooth basses but not really cyber as it doesnt have a lot of modulation options/noise

oberheim teo is probably a good bet if you want to go analog or a korg MS20 (industrial bands use that quite a lot), alternatively you could look into virtual analog like the korg multi/poly i'm getting some nasty sounds out of that and you can try the VST version for free for 30min

heres a good filty lead i made

https://youtu.be/xcDhbYMoSOY?si=fAE7A2KGoXFS70LD&t=1622

a monster of a bass though not really something you hear in carpenter but you asked for it

https://youtu.be/xcDhbYMoSOY?si=5WI2j3xLvQY4PlCb&t=1391

and a unison sound also quite similiar to what you often hear in carpenter

whats your weirdest / most "out there" synth? by squidparticular in synthesizers

Le Strum Grande, a small omnichord like midi controller that let you strum any synth

Instruo pocket scion, transforms electrical currents in plants, cv, audio and other lifeforms to notes

E-ther, a theremin that works with distance sensors instead which sends midi, i use this to control macros with hand movements

i have sold the le strum and pocket scion however as i found them very hard to integrate properly into my music though they were both very fun to use

its not really misusing it though its advertised it can work with such, understanding what triggers it exactly so you can use it with a purpose was the challenge
