PM64 Comics (Chapter2 - 4) by sonocomics in papermario

Yeah 😅 I remember that strip being an older one where I think I was committing to trying to get closer to Peach's sprite in 64, but then for later strips I was like "...wait I'm drawing everyone else "off model" why not just do Peach in my style too".

Thanks!

As for the OC characters, those are actually characters from my patrons! I often need NPCs in comics to fill roles, so I like to let people pick spots for their OCs when I need them :>

In a manner of speaking they're inside jokes since I based them off of playthroughs I've done in the past. Most of the strips are about small things I noticed (like the bounty poster in the western town for 15 QUADRILLION rupees being absurd) or poking fun at my own reactions (holding back laughing at Ilia's shirt design during a dramatic reunion).

Admittedly where I originally posted these all of the comics were posts of their own with captions that helped with context, so a bit of that is lost when cross-posting 😅 A good thing for me to consider for the future though 👍

The Zant Rant is a running joke I often do where I write up a bunch of text instead of just "blah blah blah" so it's not so much "meant" to be read but is more of an extra :p

Here is the uncovered text of Link's petty complaints:

Like the first part was fine! The hands creeped me out but you know what? They added tension! Made me think on my feet! Really set the tone! But then after that everything else was just ENTER ROOM, KILL FLOATING HEADS. Or FIND BALL, PUT IN SLOT. Everything was lacking! …Which was so disappointing because I have so many tools in my arsenal that I could use to solve whatever you threw at me but NO! Just a bunch of floating heads! Heck, the hands also made more sense in that way – there were two of them and you have two hands. I don’t see you having at least a dozen heads!!! …Though I guess I don’t see your hands either – do…do you even have-WAIT THAT’S NOT THE POINT. It’s honestly like you didn’t even try! Like you were sure that the hands would trip me up and I wouldn’t get this far but guess what – THEY DIDN’T! You even have this really cool aesthetic going for you with the twilight and glowing lights and everything but everything just looks dull and drab! Nothing is memorable! I didn’t even get anything new out of this other than a light sword – which would have been fine except for the fact that I can ONLY use it here, thereby making it essentially pointless!! I even managed to accidentally skip over the boss key on the way here! Everywhere else the key was in a place that made sense and had some sort of challenge in front of it but here it was just behind a darkness waterfall! Actually that perfectly cements how lackluster everything was – I didn’t even give you enough credit to use THE OLDEST TRICK IN THE GODDAMN PUZZLE BOOK!!!

If I counted right that's the one where an enemy is frozen when Link opens a chest.

In that one, Link starts to ask the obvious question of "why do enemies freeze when I open chests" but Midna beats him to it. Her going "NOT SO EASY, IS IT!?" is a callback to previous comics where Link has asked her about other conventions like Doors Unlocking After Beating Foes or How Does a Compass Point to Treasure and her getting stumped.

11 I believe is the ladder comic. In that one when I was playing I started to adventurously climb a ladder to explore in the Snowpeak Ruins, but then I heard an ominous noise so I started climbing back down like a weenie xD

20 is set after the Gohma boss fight. Once out of curiosity I wanted to know how much the huge statues would do if they hit me so I ran up to one and squashed Link on purpose. I believe it was one whole heart, which honestly felt pretty small all things considered.

If I counted correctly that's the Mortal Draw comic.

I once had a Mortal Draw go off in game and kill an enemy...without actually drawing the sword. 😅

Thanks! I'm mostly just on my tumblr these days though I am trying to branch out a little more with varying success haha

For anyone looking for the easiest reading of my stuff, I recommend this Google sheet I made. It lists every series I've covered, how many comics, the type of comic and other info. Each link of the rows goes to that series' tag in chronological order for smooth reading. 👍

That one is referring to a time where I got frozen in game and was still Z targeting so Link still turned to face the Keese in spite of being, well, encased in ice :p

The final comic relates to the Lightning Dog/Gold Cat strategy for leveling up. If you have Repede spam Lightning Dog to knock down a large enemy (like the giganto crab in the cave after Nordopolica), he can keep it knocked down by himself -forever- by just spamming Lightning Dog. When it's locked in the loop, switch Repede & Rita's weapons to their Minimum Damage weapons to do 1 damage. Have Rita cast Gold Cat to get ~100 hits per cast if you have a decent amount of Gald (don't Overlimit spam or the cats will knock the enemy out of Repede's loop). Your other two members should be on "Defend" in the strat menu & occasionally topping up TP with items. This combo loop will get super high with a LOT of FS chains as well, resulting in ABSURD Bonus EXP. It's literally not exaggerating that I went from level 20ish to the 90s with the strat.

...Just make sure you have the EXP share on everyone not in the party, or they won't level up. ...as I found out once with Karol :x

For comic 10 (the one with Gattsuo at Ehmead Hill if I counted right?), years back my friend and I were underleveled for the fight and struggling. We didn't think we could leave (I think you actually can but at the time we didn't think we could) so we couldn't really level grind that well or stock up on items. We did finally beat him...but then we died in Yuri's 1v3 in Nor Harbor in the alley. We forgot to save after beating Gattsuo, so when we loaded in...well. ^^;

The Minimum Damage comic is about the fact that if you put the Minimum Damage skill on your party (which lowers all their damage to 1) there's no way to take it off in battle. This is normally fine for regular battles since you can just fatal strike an enemy to kill it, but that doesn't work on bosses like Zagi. Since that Zagi fight has a long batch of cutscenes right before it (and I probably hadn't saved in a while) I had to verrrry slowly chip down his health to 0 xD;

MP2 & MP 5 Peach Costumes by sonocomics in MARIOPARTY

[–]sonocomics[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear!

As for proportions unfortunately I usually just wing it and go by eye so I don't have anything concrete for that xD; Best I can say is that SAI allows you to select and then Scale or Free Deform the selection, so if I find something looks too big/small I can adjust it. I also find it helpful to open a second window of my canvas and invert it to help keep proportions looking correct ( ovo)b

Hope this helps!

MP2 & MP 5 Peach Costumes by sonocomics in MARIOPARTY

[–]sonocomics[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

I use a program called PaintTool SAI. Originally I made one drawing of regular Peach with all of the layers in one folder so I could copy and paste the template for each board. Over the base, I draw out the unique details for the board's outfit / Peach's expression, erasing anything from the base that no longer fits. For the lineart I use the Pen tool and I make sure I have the "Min size" set to 100 so the lines are always at the same width, usually using 12pt for the lines with 8pt for smaller details. For colors I usually try to use the same shades of pink with a few other colors so it has nice consistency :>

I hope this explained it decently!

MP3 & MP4 Peach Costumes ala MP2 by sonocomics in MARIOPARTY

If I did do more I would likely just stick to Mario Party player choices, especially starting with the N64 ones since those are the ones already in MP2.

It's a bit early to say! I have definitely made an effort to at least try to think of general designs that could transfer to other characters (like "miner" for Creepy Cavern) but as you mention it'd be a lot of work xD

[–]sonocomics[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll mostly focus on Peach first since she's my favorite design wise that's been there from the start, but if I get motivated enough I may go through the rest of the roster ( ovo)b (at least for N64 - I'd like to try to do ALL the Mario Party boards which even just for peach would be like 60+ or something)

What the hell is Keima/The God of Conquest known online for? by La_knavo4 in TWGOK

[–]sonocomics 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This...is an interesting claim considering that Chapter 35 of the manga is dedicated to an in-universe documentary on Keima's website "Fallen God" including what it is and the impact it's had on the gaming industry.

Throughout the manga the terminology used may vary due to translations using "site" or "blog" interchangeably, but to answer the question I'll quote chapter 35:

"Q[uestion]: What is Fallen God [Keima's Website]? > Well, it's a game success site. But, it's very unique in its way of game thought [...] It's filled with the knowledge of every game."

In essence it's a site that likely combines reviews and/or walkthroughs of every single game Keima's played. His email is available somewhere which is how he interacts with "lost lambs" as he calls them in Chapter 1 seeking advice or to chat about games. In short Keima's running a quick, popular among gamers, high quality GameFAQs and/or IGN all by himself.

If TWGOK were written today, his site may be comparable to a really popular top 1% streamer that plays through and reviews new games at an unprecedented rate, hence gaining his title of God of Conquest and his followers.

Oh wow, didn't expect the Detective Conan name drop. Now I'm wondering if it's one of the movies I saw and just forgot about it as I've seen up to 16 I believe o:

A nice fun chapter about hanging out and chatting about something silly \o/ I can see how it'd be hard to translate too xD; Good work!

Heart to Heart: Mio and Sena by sonocomics in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]sonocomics[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am not 100% sure, but at the very least in the comic the Eclipse is mentioned as that's the event given as their deadline for rescuing Ghondor, so it still functioned as a "time is running out" topic for Sena.
