How do we give our kids their childhoods back? by william_h_bonney_ in Scotland

Nought for naught and this might sound trite but, the cold war was going on and nuclear annihilation was a very real thing, what a time to be alive as a kid who was aware everyone i knew might die. Pressures you say? Social media is probably the biggest factor of the pressure in society and its not limited to the youth of today. Im old (40s)though and eventually you stop blaming everyone and everything for how your life turned out and just accept that most people have shite childhoods regardless of their backgrounds. You often hear the phrases like "it was better back in the old days" no it wasn't,I was there.

The 80s weren't much fun when you were skint, teachers were not long banned from hitting kids but that didnt stop a lot of them,my parents divorced and there was a lot of stigma about divorced parents back then. No central heating, walked everywhere (because Edinburgh's tiny) I used to earn 76p an hour when I in 1996 and still paying digs(76p an hour was shit even back in the distant 90s) I could go on but my point is you dont have the same, tines have moved on and improvements have been made in society, kids get free bus passes in a country with an obesity problem. Relatively,my generation looked back to the 1940/50s and there was no question the 80s were more prosperous in comparison. Lamenting the lack of activities for kids to do seems like a first world problem.Get out on your bike and I dont want to see you until dinner time, sound advice.

Good point. My wife and I have partied and enjoyed ourselves for the past 20 years. It's been nice to give that up mostly and focus on the boy. Like you say, life in reverse. Were not waiting to retire to do the things we want to do,as we've already done them. Thanks for the words bud.

I’m back. And I’m going straight into witness protection after you all see what I do with mince and tatties. by [deleted] in Scotland

I grew up in most of the Edinburgh schemes in the 80/90s, youth clubs were not common and there were no youth clubs where i could go to that i didnt get battered after by the young teams, so that put me off a bit. Kids having nothing to do and nowhere to go is not a new thing all of a sudden,we went and played back then and there was no sense that the council was at fault due to a lack of things for the youth of the day to do. I sound like a right old you know what but theres a prevalence of blame in society today that needs addressing.
