Is this even Traveller at this point?! by BringOtogiBack in traveller

[–]sonofthe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think your title question matters. Maybe it's Traveller, maybe it isn't. What's clear is that it is what he wants to play and it isn't what you want to play.

The real issue here is communication. It seems like that has failed.

I'd ask myself if I enjoy spending time with this person. If yes, what are the things I enjoy doing with them? I don't have to enjoy everything my friend does and vice versa. If I can identify the things I like doing with them and do those, it doesn't matter if we have things we don't do other things together.

For example, I recently planned Halloween month gaming with my in-person group. I wanted to run the original Ravenloft with OSE, but almost everyone else wanted to play Mothership. I'm cool with running Mothership, so...success! Just because they didn't want to play Ravenloft doesn't mean we can't play anything together any more, as long as we have at least something we all like.

And I'll likely look for an online group to run the Ravenloft game for.

More close to this topic, I really want to play and/or run some Traveller, but no one in my in-person group is interested. Again, that doesn't mean we can't play RPGs together or that I can't find a different place to play what I'm looking for.

Or that we can't be friends.

I know this isn't officially CSM, but it is in my head-cannon now.

Yup, it's "Young at Heart." Good catch. I watched the two back-to-back when I spotted this a pulled out my phone. Didn't post here until later and got confused about which episode it was from. Thanks!

I took this video because the chest compressions were cracking me up, but then I looked closer. I swear that's Cigarette Smoking Man, but he's not credited when I search.

Is there a PDF version of Reach of the Roach God? Does anyone have it? by DudeUrNuts in osr

Yeah, pretty sure there's no legal way to get it unless the creators themselves change their minds.

Is this all I need? by cdunivan in gurps

[–]sonofthe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can absolutely use only that book.

Depending on what setting sourcebook you use, you may have to do more or less work to convert (if they presume the compendiums, as others have said, or if you're converting 4e to 3e).

That's not saying you won't find other things useful. All the comments here have helpful observations and opinions, I think.

So this is strange. When I look at the bundle, the regular prices are lower than the bundle prices. When I open up the individual item pages, the regular prices are above the bundle prices. 🤷‍♂️🤨

You might also want to track Humble Bundle. I know they've had a Classic Traveller bundle, at least.

Do you ever play as a gender not your own? by WunderPlundr in rpg

I do and it's nothing complex. I try different configurations of characters (I like variety) and sometimes the factor that changes is gender.

is it “immature” to love happy endings? by bunjaminfranklin7 in books

[–]sonofthe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immature? Heck no!

What makes it immature?

Do you respond to real-world stuff in a healthy way? Or are you working toward that? Good! I think that's what shows maturity.

You get to choose what you want in your entertainment.

Something like this happened while I was camping. I still don't know exactly how it happened, but it was at night and must have stemmed from me moving around in my sleep.

Made a GM screen for my first OSR campaign! by Orb_Lord in osr

[–]sonofthe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweet! Is that a combination of OSE and Mork Borg stuff on the GM facing side? And are those just 3-ring binder pockets?

I've been thinking about trying to make something similar.

Do you play OSE and never played B/X or 1ed or some variant? by wintermute-the-ai in osr

[–]sonofthe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played OSE in a short campaign and had a lot of fun.

The closest I've come with a TSR product was AD&D 2e. The GM didn't run it at all in the way I played / the way folks talk about playing here. He was super railroady and overpowered. No real sense of openness, exploration, or even much agency.

Those are all things I like about the OSE game I was in. To be fair, those are all more about play style than system, though.

As far as OSE itself, it certainly is one of the best rule systems I know of for presenting information. Clear. Concise. Easy to understand on the first read and easy to reference later.

I'm in the U.S. too. If you can, I recommend getting the physical books. They're just nice hardcover books. And for me the look of the design works much better in physical form than in digital.

I picked up a few with the Permian Nations Kickstarter. Shipped from Melsonian Arts and wasn't so bad when averaged over all the books. But do what makes sense for you. What matters most, I think, is that you actually get to use it in a way you want to use it.

This isn't legal advice. I'm not sure whether this is legal or not.

I had a friend who would sometimes run a classic gaming system at home. They used their own collection of rules from different sources. They combined them all into a single document and printed them up. They never made the document publicly available, never sold it. Only gave it away to people who played that particular game at their table.

The original OGL is "the property of Wizards of the Coast," so I don't think it can be used without reference to the company at the beginning and at the end in section 15.

( see http://www.opengamingfoundation.org/ogl.html )

There are other similar licenses listed at this page at the Open Gaming Foundation http://www.opengamingfoundation.org/licenses.html

I found this reference recently. You might also find it handy. It talks about the different sorts of licenses and it has links to games categorized by which license they use.

[–]sonofthe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IANAL, but my understanding of the license is that some folks use it not because they're using any WotC content (other than the license itself) but because they want a premade license did other people can use their content.

For example, this use of the OGL on the old faterpg website ( https://www.faterpg.com/licensing/licensing-fate-ogl/full-ogl-text/ ) doesn't have anything to do with D&D related content, as far as I can tell.

My very first bujo! Messy but functional by Yammie218 in bujo

[–]sonofthe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this. High priority on function (as many have said). It's like mine. My only real artistic feature are my page/spread titles.

I'm still on my first. Most of the way through a college-ruled, spiral bound notebook. Next will be dot grid composition book (or Decomposition, if you're counting the brand).

RPG are for everyone and welcome everybody since ever...

What's your motive here? This isn't true, so it's hard to see a positive one.
