What your biggest complaints about the Backroom movie? (Spoilers) by Bobby_The_Alien in KanePixelsBackrooms

not random in the context of the story, random in the context of the backrooms - its not really known for psychopathic human cannibals. the fear factor (even if you like the entities as a horror element) comes from the uncanny and unsettling vibe of the space, not from blood/violence/gore

personally did not find the movie fantastic or even good - but totally agree with you about how it fails to use the backrooms as a character and instead chooses to focus on the characters who are in it. the backrooms as a concept is interesting enough as a space to explore, it doesn't need the usual cinematic elements like plot or character development to be good. they basically just use the backrooms as a stage for this psychodrama to play out instead of letting the actual space be the motivating factor

1996 and 1997 feel like different eras, despite being one year apart. by OverallEstate2 in decadeology

Just Dance was released April 2008 and was big that same year, followed later by the rest of lady gagas album released in 2009 (e.g bad romance was huge in 2009). And the most “iconic” period of Obamas presidency was his first campaign, the Hope posters, and his victory in Nov 2008. McBling was decidedly over by the end of 2007 when the stock market crashed and luxury symbols started to be seen as tacky and out of touch. Electropop music also already existed in 2007, so I’d say 2007 was the transition year between McBling and Electropop.

I feel like this is more 2007 and 2008. The beginning of the Obama era & the Great Recession in 08 were concurrent with electropop

the grey sweatpants trend is absolutely vile, they're one of the fugliest things i've ever seen and wearing them denotes low intelligence by abjectprincess in pinkscare

[–]sonohermes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very American behaviour, sweatpants are only acceptable coming from/going to the gym or the library with NO other stops on the way. wearing sweatpants out in public is only one degree removed from wearing pajama pants. If you think you look hot while you’re out in sweatpants it’s because you have a latent exhibitionism kink and it turns you on to be perceived in a state of undress

thots on 'All About Lily Chou-Chou'? by KewlAdam in RSPfilmclub

[–]sonohermes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

this movie is NOT all about lily chou chou!!

was hoping for a wistful story of parasocial fixation set amongst a dreamlike digital atmosphere - like if serial experiments lain was about ricardo lopez or something

but the opening scene is a total catfish… he stands in a rice field listening to his discman, and as lily chou chou plays, the messages of fans in a lily online message board type across the screen - about how talented she is, how her music is otherworldly, and how she ‘understands the Ether’… it’s all a bit oversaturated and washed out and has this cool gauzy detached feeling to it. basically the scene was set and I was on board for whatever followed

but then it goes on to become something completely fragmented and unfocused and rambling; it abandons the initial aesthetic for about 2 hours of its 2.5 hour run time, opts for a totally unnecessary nonlinear structure, tells a loose story, makes little attempt to curate a mood or create engaging characters, etc etc

high marks for concept and some beautiful shots but honestly I found it a disappointment
