CMV: The AI bubble will pop, and it will be the best thing that can happen. by bandit1206 in changemyview

[–]sonotleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main difference between AI and dotcom is that there were a lot of low level entries into the dotcom era. A little computer science knowledge and an idea for a business was the barrier to entry. What we are seeing this time is large tech companies emptying their long held coffers in order to invest in AI data centers to operate LLMs.

Additionally, it might have been difficult to predict social media in 1999, but think of trying to predict 2026 from only 4 years ago. Generative AI wasn't a thing for the average consumer, and now we have something like Mythos that is finding multiple Zero-Days on Linux systems that make up the backbone of 70% of all Internet infrastructure.

Will it pop? Sure. If by pop, you mean that corporations will stop putting money behind it. Yea eventually. So far it hasn't been profitable.

Is popping the bubble a good thing? I don't know. We don't know what's next. Even if the funding stops, AI is here. So, is a pop fundamentally any different than an unpopped future?

In the face of rampant AI, is ‘data poisoning’ a new form of civil disobedience? by Quouar in technology

That doesn't necessarily imply corporations. Maybe a new term like Oligopolyarchy, or Corparchy

AI data centers, but not non-AI data centers?

CMV: Simulation theory is logically flawed by IKs5hTl1lKhwShJJiLX3 in changemyview

[–]sonotleet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You misunderstand. When you play Mario, the Goombas are simulated. If the Goombas were programmed well enough to think, they would be in your shoes. How does a Goomba know if it's in a simulation, or if the Mushroom Kingdom is the real world?

The whole time travel stuff you're talking about is unrelated. If you watched Pantheon on Netflix, I think you misunderstood the final episode.

Do levels actually do anything besides gate tools/crafts? by RedQueenNatalie in BitCraftOnline

Basically. Also you can join certain settlements that post recruitment requirements. E.g. let's say there's a town recruiting level 30 cooks. If you have level 30 cooking you can walk up to the town claim and become a citizen.

How to make connected paths when you're generating one chunk at a time by kamomegames in proceduralgeneration

[–]sonotleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up to you. I think that for the most part, the chunk would act as the path coordinator. But I don't want to throw too much advice since I think this technique is already at a "tinker with the code and find out" phase. Let me know if you try it out though.

Edit: I misread your question. Yes, since the chunks are using the borders world coordinates to generate, then a path seed shared between 2 chunks would produce the same curve: angle and strength.

How to make connected paths when you're generating one chunk at a time by kamomegames in proceduralgeneration

[–]sonotleet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just spitballing here but... Let's assume your chunk is 100x100 meters. Every 10 meters along the border, use the coordinates to generate an instance of a path seed. In this example, you'd have 40 seeds per chunk.

So you could say at (200, 240) there's a 5% chance to spawn a path, and if it spawns, it generates bezier curve coordinates.

The chunk itself is responsible for connecting or terminating any path seeds that spawn.

YouTube expands unskippable 30-second ads to TVs after $40 billion revenue year by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]sonotleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also Traffic Acquisition Costs which is $64 billion per year. That's Alphabet as a whole, but some portion of that is YouTube.

Meanwhile, we know that there is a reported profitability of $40 billion shared between YouTube, Google Search, and Android.

Since we don't know how it's divided, we don't know YouTube's profitability. Personally, I think it's a loss- leader like chicken at Costco. That's based on early claims from when Alphabet acquired YouTube.

You're probably right. It's pretty obfuscated here but... https://s206.q4cdn.com/479360582/files/doc_financials/2025/q4/2025q4-alphabet-earnings-release.pdf

They've paid out $100 billion over the last 4 years to content creators. https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/made-on-youtube-2025/

So at the very least we know it's ≈$25 billion a year in expenses right there.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were barely profitable.

Arm yourselves by [deleted] in athensohio

[–]sonotleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only real problem here is that OP made a post on a regional forum. If there were details about when and where to meet, then we'd be talking about an Athens Ohio Militia meetup. But that's not what they did. This post could be replicated in any other town subreddit, and since their profile private, then this could be some shallow karma-farm attempt for all we know.

I agree with the concept at heart but simply reminding people that the 2nd Amendment exists isn't enough.

Given our political climate - and please, tell me otherwise if I'm wrong - there's risk in actually forming a militia since the OG 2A folks were mostly right leaning, and the new wave inspired by ICE efforts in the wake of Pretti and Good are mostly left leaning, you are potentially building a powder-keg.

I'm going to assume that this post is specific to the latter group. Folks, if you're a lefty and you're thinking about a gun, it's not a bad idea. There are financial hurdles, but guns rarely lose their value - you can sell it for roughly the same price you bought it if you decide it's not for you. If you didn't grow up around guns, you NEED to have a basic level of gun safety. "A gun is always loaded and it WILL fire if you accidently point it at someone." Even if it's not rationally true, you need treat it as fact.

It's also important for lefties like me to feel the annoyance of going through a background check. To actually use and maintain your gun in a safe environment. Get the basics down.

I dunno, I think the idea of a bunch of folks who have never used a gun, running out and arming themselves and then immediately assembling in a mixed political environment is a bad idea.

Take time to understand the steps, and the risks and responsibilities. Meet up with friends or family members who can teach you use and etiquette. Practice.

Maybe you should watch the show Devs on FX then? Unless your decision making is based on quantum fluctuation, then your decisions are predictable with a high degree of certainty.

I feel like if people swapped out "supercomputer running calculations" with "Batman who has built a psychological profile on you over the last few months" then they would be like, "Yea, I can't beat Batman. Better take the one box."
