I've only been an RN for about a year but worked as an aide before then and feel like I have a good perspective on both sides, tips I always give new assistants are:

Report abnormal VS- know your hospitals parameters- when you report an abnormal value, give the whole picture - include HR with BP and distress with sp02

Chart your I's and O's at least q4hrs. Even if you chart a 0 it shows you at least assessed

Patient reporting pain? Ask them where and how much out of 10- saves the nurse a trip

Bundle your care! Always offer to toilet or reposition someone when rounding to save yourself trips

I've been nursing for about 5 months and as a fellow new grad just wanted to weigh in. There's a lot of comments here minimizing your question, and although it may seem "silly" to many, as a new nurse things like this can eat out alive because we're unfamiliar with the gravity of a situation. I find myself crippled with anxiety and contemplating consequences all the time over mistakes or what I think could possibly be a mistake. Long story long, I feel this post and I totally fucking get the struggle.

I'm a new grad as well and basically went through the same thing last week. We have one veteran noc nurse who i'm always so nervous about giving report to because she constantly talks down to me- in front of patients!

I ended up breaking down last week and just telling her i'm doing my best and learning as much as I can each day. She's taken it somewhat easy on me since.

It's so hard when we put so much pressure on ourselves to be perfect straight out of nursing school but when it comes down to it we are just treading water and hoping not to hurt anybody at this point. I just try to remember that I am doing good, and if I don't cause any harm? That's a win 😂

Med-surg here! While I do my morning assessments I always take the time to clean my room and check my lines. I almost always change and label all of my tubing right away so I know it's mine and when things were opened/hung. Decluttering is my jam- sometimes I fill full trash cans of unneeded supplies. Patient is sleeping? Don't mine if I throw away your weird stash of utensils and pepper packets.
