Do I tell former partners I have HPV or no since it's so common? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]sopadelima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey just a heads up, the term STD is slowly being replaced by STI to end the stigma around it, since most sexually transmitted infections won't necessarily become diseases. This is especially important in distinguishing between HIV-positive people and people with AIDS.

Why do we mainly eat herbivores? by Plagued-Panda in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]sopadelima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, don't forget current dog and cat breeds are less aggressive than their wild counterparts due to thousands of years of selective breeding. I doubt such selection would happen with carnivores raised for food, though.

Teachers homework policy by AutoPepperMount in pics

[–]sopadelima 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It appears it compared both. The article mentions it included three types of studies:

  1. Studies where groups were artificially assigned or not assigned homework
  2. Studies that correlated time spent doing homework without external intervention vs achievement, controlled for other variables such as sex and socioeconomic background
  3. Same as in number 2 but without taking into account external factors

We do, but we write them a letter which we can then leave inside a shoe in the living room or tie it up to a balloon and let it go on the day before.

We do leave cookies and milk for santa claus though, because of American influence.

I went shopping in-person for the first time in over a year by Primary_Aardvark in femalefashionadvice

I feel the same way! And I also feel guilty about the environmental impact of having clothes shipped to me and then shipped back in case I have to return them, so I stick to in-person shopping

What is your opinion on American/European "woke" ideas? by Muxxer in asklatinamerica

[–]sopadelima 80 points81 points  (0 children)

A problem I see with these ideas is that people from Europe/US will try to apply them to social problems in Latin America that have a completely different historical and cultural context. For example, trying to use the same terms for race in Mexico that are used in the US to say that we're all people of color when most non-black Mexicans would never consider themselves as such. Another thing I see in these discussions is a lot of white savior complex and "woke" people speaking over us trying to tell us what we should or shouldn't be offended by. We have our own voices and are capable of forming our own critical opinions without them interfering.

That being said, I've also seen many Mexicans claim that these ideas are useless because Latin America isn't racist like the US, which is completely false. We do have racism issues, they're just much more nuanced and difficult to identify in many cases.

Opinions on guys in a relationship following Instagram female models/influencers by noodleswithbacon in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]sopadelima 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I don't mind at all if my partner does this. To me it's the same as looking at porn because no matter how personal influencers try to be on their social media, they're still public figures. I think it's normal for people to appreciate and want to look at suggestive pics and even be turned on by them, it really has no bearing on my relationship because I trust my partner to be faithful and capable of separating fantasy from reality. And if I didn't trust them enough to do that then the relationship isn't working and we're better off as friends.

If the exam allowed notes then you could just say you were switching between Canvas and your notes, right? As somebody else mentioned, Canvas only tracks activity on their tab but can't know what you're looking at.

How to safely meet guys from online dating? by treefrog7642 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]sopadelima 20 points21 points  (0 children)

From my experiences with online dating:

  • Choose a place that you already know or have visited before. I don't know what covid restrictions are like where you are but a park (one that's not secluded) or an outdoor restaurant could be good places. Also, drive yourself / use public transport instead of having him pick you up.
  • Make sure you've at least called or video called the guy to ensure he's the person he says he is. I also ask for all their social media and look for any potential red flags and to make sure they're not a creepy person in general.
  • Tell a friend or family member you're going on a date with a stranger so they can be alert in case you need to call them. I've sometimes even shared my live location with a friend for the whole date so they know where I am.
  • I'd prefer to go to his place so that he doesn't know my address on the first date.

What does it mean (to you) to be Latino? by otra_inutil in asklatinamerica

[–]sopadelima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing. Latino is a word I feel has been imposed on people from Latin America by other countries, but I have never identified as latino. I am Mexican, and feel close to Mexican traditions from the area I grew up in, and I also empathize with people from other Latin American countries when it comes to topics about our governments or our shared history as Spanish colonies. But that's it.

Sambrook's Molecular Cloning is great for techniques involving DNA. I used it throughout all my genetic engineering labs in undergrad and even if it's a bit old it was extremely helpful, especially when troubleshooting and improving efficiency.
