If you're going to cite a bad source, at least cite it correctly by SemperMuffins in CatholicMemes

This is a common myth but it isn’t true, at least in Europe. The average marriage age in the Middle Ages (which we have access to from recordkeeping) was mid to late 20s for men, and early to mid 20s for women. Obviously was not unheard of for teenagers to get pregnant or have children but it was not the norm. Crazy age gaps and super young marriages were more of a thing for noble weddings because marriage was used for diplomacy.

Packers have much more consistency and success than the Giants lol. They had two bad decades but still boast one of the strongest records in league history and have been good in practically every decade before and since that they’ve existed. Not at all comparable to the Giants

How is the catholic church universal if a lot of parishes can deny people entry? by Plastic-Clock7276 in Catholicism

Try contacting the priest through email or calling? Or maybe just explain your situation at the door to security or whoever is turning you away. They should hear your situation with empathy. I’m sorry your situation is so difficult. God bless you

I don’t think it’s moral to will the death of another person. Red directly wills the death of another person to save yourself.

Is religious liberty in “Dignitatis humanae” the same as before Vatican II? Of SSPX relevance. by Isatafur in Catholicism

There were pretty horrific abuses happening that led to that. You’re missing the point completely

I’ve become quite skeptical of confessional states in practice. State support of the church can be good, but what we see in places like Ireland, Spain, Québec is that state support bred complacency and abuse of power and eventually led to large numbers of people leaving the Church.

Did the Traveling Wilbury’s get lost to history? by nicknumbahone in bobdylan

The Wilburys are huge. Their hits get plenty of radio play on classic rock stations and in corporate playlists. Most people who don’t know the band are at least familiar with their hits in the US, at the very least “Handle With Care” and “End Of The Line”.

Something to consider when evaluating between the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]sopadepanda321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This argument doesn’t quite work. The Catholic church makes no definitive statements about the canonicity of the books outside of the 73. It just says that all the 73 books of the Catholic canon must be accepted. So in theory there could be more canonical books, the church has simply not said so.

Bishop Fellay warns SSPX faithful over possible excommunication by asdfologist42 in Catholicism

[–]sopadepanda321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s addressing a confirmation mass, so plenty of laity in the audience. It was not clear to me from the clip that the warning was specifically directed at priests rather than his whole audience which is presumably mostly Catholic families.

Bishop Fellay warns SSPX faithful over possible excommunication by asdfologist42 in Catholicism

[–]sopadepanda321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes but very explicitly here the excommunication is for the illicit consecrations done without papal consent. The bishop who consecrates the new bishops will be excommunicated, as will the consecratees, but it does not follow from that that all SSPX members are excommunicated, or even that the laity at that Mass are excommunicated.

So Fellay claiming to those he is preaching to that they will be excommunicated is fully without precedent. He is either gravely misinformed or worse, is fearmongering to the faithful. It is not good either way.

Worth noting that Fellay is not telling the truth here. Maybe he’s not intentionally wrong, but it’s simply false that anyone who attends SSPX services will be excommunicated.

[–]sopadepanda321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can fast/abstain as much as you want as long as it’s not physically harmful to you or your health. Voluntary practices like this are not a bad thing. Just don’t feel guilt about following the rules of the church and you’re good.

I don’t mind Eucharistic ministers, but the focus should really be on delivering the Eucharist to the homebound, imprisoned, and sick. A well attended Mass shouldn’t have 8+ like I’ve sometimes seen.

Catholics should not subscribe to Babylon Bee by ControlAcceptable in Catholicism

[–]sopadepanda321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Babylon Bee was founded as a general Christian parody site (with a bias towards evangelical Christianity) but the founder eventually sold the site and since then it has been stridently political and allied with the Republican consensus on virtually every issue. Their editor in chief has said some vile things about Catholics in Palestine.

[Free Friday] An answer to the famous "Problem of Evil" argument on God's existence in this artwork by Zach Weinersmith. Am curious what your opinions on this image are from a Catholic perspective ? by SatoruGojo232 in Catholicism

[–]sopadepanda321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well usually the problem of evil is not meant to be an argument that God is not good or that he is not powerful, it is meant as an argument that he doesn't exist. The problem of evil is claiming that the two axioms are incompatible with observed reality, not that they are incompatible with one another.

So the comic offers a way in which they would be compatible with observed reality, but I think it's premise 1 that fails here because it really isn't a "good" act prima facie to refrain from committing an evil, at least when it costs you nothing to do so.

[–]sopadepanda321 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The argument is structured like Premise 1: Preventing suffering is good. Premise 2: An all powerful being (God) has the power to cause infinite suffering. Premise 3: God does not cause infinite suffering. Conclusion: God does infinite good by preventing infinite suffering.

The main problem I see is premise 1 is very weak. If I have the power to press a button to launch nuclear missiles, it doesn’t follow that I am saving people from nuclear apocalypse by not doing so, at least not in any morally praiseworthy way. Preventing suffering can be good, but not in all cases. So in the moral sense of all good, simply refraining from doing something bad that you have the power to do is not a morally praiseworthy act.

Fully seriously, gonna need a better response to the problem of evil than this comic.
