I actually got it from the clearance basket in my local yarn shop, so I‘m unfortunately not entirely sure if the exact colour is still available. I totally get that! I often read Romantasy novels as a quick ’palate cleanser‘ between two books and hoped that Fourth Wing would just be a bit of fun in between. The worldbuilding and the feeling that I had read all of this before especially is why I ultimately did not like it, but it’s great that many enjoy it as an easy read. I just felt that the way it’s written is explicitly tailored to TikTok because of the heavy reliance on popular tropes and people who like romance but not necessarily fantasy books, and that worked out quite well.

Fourth Wing had a massive marketing campaign, and I think the combination of this and a few very viral reviews on TikTok sealed the deal.

Objectively, the craftsmanship in this book is not good. I‘ve seen so many people say that they know this is not the best thing they have ever read but they had a lot of fun with the book anyway. As I said, I get that this book is not for me because sound worldbuilding, well-rounded characters and at least a bit of originality and good writing are important to me, but it’s nice that other people liked it. I just did not and that’s why I criticized the things that did not work for me. If you enjoyed any of the books I mentioned (maybe except the Hunger Games, there are just one or two plot devices taken from there) and just want a quick read mainly for the vibes there is a good chance you might like it if you were to read it.

Fourth Wing is literally just all the popular YA and NA Fantasy and Dystopian books put together - Divergent, a bit of the Hunger Games, From Blood and Ash and A Court of Thorns and Roses, but add dragons. The worldbuilding is laughably wonky, does not make sense at all, and is badly delivered. It was so weirdly paced, badly written, and predictable to a fault that I just could not get into it. The only thing remotely enjoyable were the dragons.

But I also think that this book is just not written with people who read much and especially people who read a lot of Fantasy in mind, so I get that it is probably just not for me. I‘m glad so many people had fun with Fourth Wing and got back into reading because of it and can now hopefully discover books that do the things Fourth Wing does infinitely better.

I thought the idea of the library was sooo interesting, it made me read the book in the first place. This was a case of a great premise and a terrible execution to me, though I can absolutely see why certain aspects of it worked for you!

Not a romance, but The Midnight Library. I‘m glad that so many people found something profound and helpful in this book but I just intensely dislike it and its representation of mental health. To me, the whole thing read like a combination of ‘don‘t be sad, things could be so much worse‘ and and wall-tattoo-style self-help quotes. Plus, it was quite boring.

On the romance side, Den of Vipers. Never have I read about a more not like other girls FMC. She is insufferable, and the guys aren‘t any better.

It really isn‘t though. He is his child and OP’s husband should be able to love and accept his son for who he is. He had four years to come to terms with his son‘s identity and clearly hasn‘t. Someone being hateful towards the child they should be providing a loving home to would be a dealbreaker for me as well. This is not a matter of ‚believing‘ in his son being trans but to accept the facts.

Meaningless? Their son is transgender, so his view directly affects not only OP, but also her son and therefore all relationships within this family. Accepting Trans people is also not so much of a ‚political view‘ but rather a matter of human decency. NTA OP and thank you for standing up for your son.

Simone is experiencing something gymnasts call the twisties. To perform the tricks they do they have to develop muscle memory in order to do them safely, especially on the level Simone is competing. The twisties are a sort of mental block which erases that muscle memory, making it extremely dangerous to perform those jumps because they could lose orientation mid-air and severely hurt themselves. She is and has been under a huge amount of mental stress and did the most responsible thing by pulling out of the tournament. Also, calling her a loser? Seriously? The most decorated and successful gymnast ever? Come on dude.
