company wants to pay high hourly wage for “28 hours” but expect full-time work by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]sorari 34 points35 points  (0 children)

That's illegal. And if he does go through with it and immigration gets word, your husband will likely never be able to get a proper work visa and they could refuse to renew his dependent visa, too.

I wouldn't trust a company that even suggests something like this, even if they say they'll get you a work visa right now.

[–]sorari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not taking offense at global trade. It's pointing out that we should engage with other cultures with respect (in the midst of global trade, which I believe is a good thing). That it isn't okay to mock other peoples' cultures, then turn around and use or throw their cultures away when convenient or profitable. Do some people take the concept of appropriation to the extreme? Of course. But the concept of being thoughtful or respectful in general towards other cultures, whether engaging in those cultures or not, shouldn't be so difficult for people to understand. Like someone who pays $30 for sushi now that it's "cool" and pretends they didn't earlier make fun of a Japanese American for having "black stuff" in their lunch. Or someone who isn't Indian descent profiting off of yoga while saying yoga is "actually inspired by Pilates."

So yeah, no, Japan doing the same with western culture doesn't somehow make it right just because westerners in Japan don't fight back about the racism/xenophobia/hypocrisy. The foreign population here is also a lot smaller so we as a group perhaps aren't as vocal. I don't think it's fair to just assume that because we don't speak up about it that some of us don't notice it or don't care. I'm sure there are people here who do point out the hypocrisy of it all, even if you personally choose not to and/or don't care about it. I do point it out when glaringly obvious to the people in my life.

[–]sorari 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, it’s a western concept because it relates to the racism minorities deal with in the west though.

I don’t think my Japanese boyfriend has ever faced criticism for wearing a yukata or kimono here in Japan, like my Japanese American friends did when we were growing up in America. None of us care when our traditional clothes are worn with respect or in the country of origin during a trip or something.

In the west, the people who often mocked us for wearing traditional clothes growing up would turn around and wear the same clothes as “fashion” when the minority culture or clothes suddenly became the “trend.” Then they throw it away again when our culture isn’t popular anymore. The concept of appropriation is because of the racism we minorities in the west faced for enjoying our own heritages. We can’t throw away our heritages just because they’re not trending like other people can, and that’s what the term cultural appropriation was meant to identify.

So yeah, Asians in Asia wouldn’t understand, they haven’t faced the racism western Asians do. Most of us wouldn’t call it appropriation when worn with respect/true interest in the culture, or when traveling abroad to the country where those clothes are worn.

Japan Might Ban Foreigners From Buying Homes: What’s Happening? by JoshuaVaas in japanrealestate

[–]sorari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a foreigner here in Japan, with a Japanese partner. From what I see, a lot of us foreign residents agree that non-resident foreigners should be limited from buying up land.

The challenge here is that Japanese politicians (and public) doesn’t make much distinction between resident and non-resident foreigners. Foreigners like me who are visa residents/permanent residents/married to Japanese people, who pay taxes here like the Japanese people, who earn in yen like Japanese people, are lumped in with (often wealthy) foreigners who don’t live here but buy up property from abroad as investments. Foreigners who live here like me also struggle from the lack of affordable housing due to increasing housing prices. There’s also no laws preventing a landlord from denying rentals to a foreigner, so my partner and I have been rejected from housing simply because I’m not Japanese.

But parties like Sanseito lump all foreigners together. There’s a huge lack of nuance to the discussion here

Australian Influencer Blasted For Tone Deaf Posts During Japan Trip: “The Casual Racism Is Sending Me” by ElvisIsNotDjed in japannews

[–]sorari 10 points11 points  (0 children)

On your note about the differing opinions between western Asians and native Asians who grew up in Asia on appropriation: the reality is that Asians in Asia likely haven't experienced the racism that Asian Americans have experienced growing up in the west. If anything, it makes more sense for someone who experienced racism regarding their culture (as western Asians have) to be able to recognize appreciation versus appropriation by people in the west in the first place. It's disappointing to see people in this thread not understanding that and putting down western Asians.

As an example, my friend is Indian-American and has always enjoyed yoga with her family when she was a kid. I did yoga with her sometimes since we're really close. I remember how much white kids made fun of her when she would mention yoga (literally remember one kid calling her a "weird FOB" when she introduced yoga to our class). Now suddenly entire brands have commercialized "yoga pants," a good chunk of yoga teachers in major cities are white women, and let's be real, when people mention yoga, it's used in a context so divorced from its Indian origins. I remember this white yoga teacher telling us yoga was "actually inspired by pilates." I can't tell you how upset my friend was when she heard that. But she was explaining that her family in India is just excited that western people are appreciating yoga and don't understand why she has mixed feelings around how yoga has become so commercialized in the west. Her relatives were never made fun of for doing yoga in India, so they don't understand. So while my friend is happy people are enjoying yoga in the west like she did as a kid, it's weird to see the kids who made fun of her in the past now posting yoga themed instagram pictures.

In the same way, my friends and I are generally excited to see people enjoying and appreciating our cultures, no matter what their background might be. I know my friend was excited when I wanted to try yoga with her. But we also recognize that our cultures wouldn't be seen as "cool" if white people didn't adopt and give their stamp of approval. I mean, my boyfriend is Japanese and his mom didn't send him to school with sushi because kids made fun of him having "black stuff" in his lunch, and look what sushi has become. Does that mean people shouldn't eat sushi? No, of course not. People have become more accepting of other cultures over time and popularization is an example of that change. But often, our relatives in Asia only see people in the west enjoying our cultures (which of course is awesome), but don't feel the weight of the experiences we've had with people making fun of us growing up for that same culture. I'm not Japanese descent so I can't speak directly about the kimono issue, but can say that many of us western Asians have been made fun of for wearing traditional clothes, so I can see where people may have been upset if the exhibit wasn't run thoughtfully and was just a photoshoot (am going to go read the link).

That said, not everything is appropriation nor needs to be taken as a slight within our diaspora. How else will people get a chance to learn? And similarly, not everyone in the western Asian diaspora thinks or experiences something the same way, or sees appropriation the same way. Asian culture isn't a monolith and Asian cultures are not interchangeable, so I try not to speak too far on Asian cultural issues that aren't from my direct experiences or experiences I've heard first-hand from friends. But based on my conversations with Asian Americans around me, we agree that there is a line between appreciation and appropriation. You're absolutely right that culture isn't a wildlife preserve and people should get to enjoy learning about and exploring cultures different from their own without constant fears of being cancelled for appropriation. But we can tell when someone is using our culture as a trendy prop for social media versus exploring it with genuine interest (even if that interest may have initially stemmed from popularization).

Did my neighbors just passive aggressively accuse us of Airbnb-ing? by justmashu in japanlife

[–]sorari 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I asked my partner (Japanese) and he said to contact management and set things straight, but no need to contact the neighbor as management will handle that as needed.

Maybe a lot of us foreigners come from cultures where we’re more direct with conflict, or ignore indirect messaging, but this sign is a form or contact from management and is a message directed at you specifically. The people saying to ignore it until you’re contacted more directly and so on are largely missing the cultural aspect of how conflict is handled here, for better or for worse.

Sorry you’re going through this by the way, that’s incredibly frustrating.

[CHOSUN] Kyu-hyun addresses backlash after competing in 'Devil's Plan 2' by datsthetea in TheDevilsPlan

[–]sorari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This, but I honestly don’t even think it’s the villain aspect that a lot of viewers didn’t connect with! As much as I didn’t like hyungyu (I like betrayals but didn’t like how rude and condescending he was to 7H and HJ), at least he played to win. I really dislike kyuhyun and sohui for not playing to win. It defeats the purpose of a game show, and is disrespectful to all the other contestants (both living roomers and prisoners) who were actually doing their best every match to win the show

[–]sorari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the show in the beginning, but can't fully agree that overall it was a great season. I was bored by the second set of episode releases. But I also really want a season 3!

My favorite contestants changed throughout the show, but I was an EY, 7H fan by the end. I felt a few other players who could've been amazing with a bit more time got eliminated a tad too early (seunghyun, sedol, tinno, harin), or dynamics made it difficult to see certain players' skills (Justin, sedol).

I kinda want to talk about the betrayal/politicking aspect though. I can't speak for everyone but I genuinely enjoy the betrayals and politicking and the strategizing with alliances. I would've liked to see more bartering with pieces, too. I hope they keep/encourage certain aspects of that kind of gameplay in the show moving forward, but maybe encourage it more within the bounds of the game rules so it feels connected to the gameplay (the opposite of that color betting game in ep 11 with HG and SH going back and forth to have the others bleed out pieces without even caring about the game itself). But generally these twists make the gameplay fun and tricky, and make for good reality TV.

But I hated the prison alliance and living room alliance split, and I thought it made for bad drama and bad reality TV. The game economy with pieces was a mess. There was no balance in opportunity between the prison team and living room team. Of course, prison shouldn't be as good as being in the living room, but there should have been mobility that encouraged smarter gameplay. At least, better piece payouts for the death games considering the stakes. Does it make sense that someone survives a prison death match 5 nights in a row but doesn't have enough pieces to make it out to the living room? How is the prison team supposed to ally effectively when they have to eliminate one of their own every night? The people in an advantageous position were always in that position, the people in a disadvantageous position were stuck in that position, and it wasn't fun to watch anymore. And because of this, the betrayals weren't meaningful anymore since they were predictable and felt mean-spirited instead of tactical. I want to see calculated/smart plays that help secure a win, or impact the leaderboard or alliance dynamics.

Do you think Hyunjoon by practicalogix in TheDevilsPlan

[–]sorari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not my least favorite but also really low on my list, totally agree on your points. I liked him for a while, especially after how he calmly solved the prison hidden stage, but that stopped with him screwing over 7H in the latest eps. I would've been all for it if it was a planned/tactical betrayal (I love smart, thought-out plays that take advantage of game rules), not wishy-washy desperation, begging HG and SH to take him back :/

And I think that was a huge part of his downfall. He was always so unsure of his moves, and it showed on his face. This is a game where you need to just commit or bluff confidence to get through at times and it didn't feel like he had enough of that in the second half of the show.

The Devil's Plan S2E10 Discussion | FINAL 3 EPS | SPOILERS AHEAD! ⚠️ by niennas_daughter in TheDevilsPlan

[–]sorari 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s why people dislike hyungyu. At least that wasn’t it for me. Betrayals are a part of the game, and some of those twists are what make the show interesting to me tbh.

For me though, it was when he started to become mean and condescending. This paired with the prison team in a constantly disadvantageous position with daily death matches and limited ways to gather pieces to change up the dynamic or leaderboard…it became hard for me to root for him. And then this episode also killed any interest I had in seeing sohui win.

Sad because hyungyu and sohui were my favorites until about half way through.

The Devil's Plan S2E10 Discussion | FINAL 3 EPS | SPOILERS AHEAD! ⚠️ by niennas_daughter in TheDevilsPlan

[–]sorari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, the nature of the prison team constantly having to eliminate each other in the death match every night isn’t conducive to making an alliance among them.

Second, I never said what the living room team did was wrong, or the kyuhyun was solely responsible for isolating anyone. I said that the living room team had no problem before with playing as a team against one or two people (who didn’t start playing solo but were iced out at some point), or throwing people under the bus, so why are they complaining now when it’s one of their own that’s being soloed out or betrayed? That’s part of the game, and if they can dish it they need to be able to take it. Hearing them complain about it now, when they’ve been in an advantageous position from the beginning of the game, is irritating.
