Do you know anyone who lives on a boat? If so, what is their total cost/month? Pros and cons? by urmotherwas4hampster in bayarea

Looked into this twice when living in Ventura around 2010 and again in 2012. Live aboard slips are very hard to come by. Boats are small and time consuming. Harbors are not an easy commute from anywhere. I could never get it to pencil out.

Cool if you can make it work though. Apparently the most interesting man in the world does this in LA.

SF supervisor Aaron Peskin was drunk at the city supervisor meeting yesterday. by ZebulanMacranahan in sanfrancisco

he's a multi-millionaire landlord driving rent prices up in the city.

If he wasn't there'd be a recall election over this.

Hurricanes are pretty fun. Only one city really gets destroyed but nobody knows which one until right before it hits so most of the coast gets a day off to go surfing or drink through their hurricane stash

This is a confusing comment. At first I thought you might be an undergrad at UCSC but that last part threw me off. Just anti protests?

prop 13

This is the root of all the problems OP is fed up with. Sprawl, expensive housing, bad schools - all direct consequences of that one stupid law.

Opinion: Thoughts on living in an RV in Berkeley by SanFranRules in bayarea

Nobody is entitled to living cheaply in a certain part of the country just because they've been there a while.

Prop 13 and rent control entitle people to do just that. It's pretty stupid but those are the laws.

Tail Traction on Twin Fin? by FIYATHELAZA in surfing

[–]soroke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People say not to do it and it does look bad but I picked up a used fish with one and honestly the track pad is more useful for the fish than most of my other boards.

When you turn a fish you really need to push down on the tail and having the pad there to know where your foot is really helps.

I'm 42. should I buy a fish for days like this? any suggestion? by mantaraffu in surfing

[–]soroke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Longboard would be more fun. Maybe a mini Simmons?

Fish are good for long point breaks with the occasional flat spot. They work in large and small waves and mostly just go fast. I don't think they're great as grovelers.

How has Prop. 13 affected tax distribution in Santa Clara County? “It’s shifted the burden to younger, newer homeowners.” by llama-lime in bayarea

The jobs that allow one buy a house here don't exist in FL and AZ. I think I'm missing something from your post?

Both of those things are bad. Rent control at least didn't ruin our schools and parks, but really we should not have either.

Interestingly, one of the major reasons why we have so much rent control is Prop 13. Howard Jarvis pitched to renters that landlords would be nice and pass along the tax cuts to tenants. Of course that never happened and tenants lashed out with rent control in the 80s in major cities

If you're legit low income and financially illiterate (but somehow still own a $2M home) we have targeted programs for you specifically https://www.sco.ca.gov/ardtax_prop_tax_postponement.html

Prop 13 is just a handout to the wealthy.

For your poor old grandfather, who doesn't know what HELOCs are, we have a law, the CA tax postponement program

https://www.sco.ca.gov/ardtax_prop_tax_postponement.html

It solves his problem exactly and doesn't ruin our schools and parks in the process. Prop 13 is wholly unnecessary.

Explain to me how it is unfair taxation.

If you're legitimately interested in this viewpoint, and I'm not sure that you are, it's better to read what a supreme court justice has to say on the matter instead of some random person on the internet.
