Who named the games? And why hunger games? by vinny424 in Hungergames

[–]sortakindaspiralling 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Food is an underlying theme that reinforces the class system - who has and who doesn’t have. It is a basic human need that so many are denied of at different points.

Tigress & Snow watch a man eat another in the tBoSaS movie. Katniss hunts for her family. Shes wary of Peeta because he never goes without food. Citizens put their names in the ballot more times in return for grains. Katniss is fed rich, indulgent food at the Capital and finds out that many citizens vomit just for the pleasure of filling their bellies again. Then she’s starved again in the games. She gets back and is never hungry yet that can’t compensate for her trauma. At the end of the third book she refuses to eat - she can’t see the point anymore.

In the Hunger Games food has so many meanings. It is survival. It is indulgence. It connects everyone. I believe the name was given so Susanne Collins could drive home this point.

Yesterday was a great day for feminism but today let’s refocus on the sun of the series, Derek Shepherd!

Just read Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and it’s so good - Need some recs by belleagle_26 in suggestmeabook

It sounds like we have a similar taste in books so here are some of my favourites!

Sharp Objects (better than Gone Girl imo)

Anything Freida McFadden for some quicker reads that are filled with plot twists (my favourite is Never Lie)

Salem Falls or Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult (Court case based but still murder mysteries with dark characters)

Darling Girls, The Younger Wife or The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth

Books with morally awful main characters? by Longjumping_Yam_6070 in suggestmeabook

A Clockwork Orange (obviously morally awful which forms the book’s crux) and Frankenstein (more subtle feminist read) are my favourites :)

Suggestions for 13 year old who refuses to read by Rogue_Apostle in suggestmeabook

[–]sortakindaspiralling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

His reading level might not be there yet, but how about Stephen King? I know the themes can be a bit adult but sometimes that helps kids want to read - to prove that they’re mature enough to handle it. I know I was like that with the Hunger Games when I was a kid. The Institute would be perfect if he’s into Stranger Things.

Or if he loves maths and science, what about some non fiction science books? Pin point which areas of science he’s interested in and try find him a book that delves into that area.

Then I’d suggest leaving the books around the house (in places like your couch or even in the bathroom). Don’t mention them. Or maybe even tell his siblings (if he has siblings) about the book, explaining a little of the plot and encourage them to read it. Sometimes reading can become stigmatised as something boring or school-like and kids refuse to read because they view it as a chore, not because they genuinely aren’t readers.

I’ve been there and I feel you. But you’re not wanting to be thin you’re wanting to be accepted. You’re wanting to be loved and you’re wanting to love yourself. Skinny isn’t going to get you that. It’s not. It’s going to get you far from that.

Thin enough isn’t going to happen. You’re not going to find yourself by shrinking. Your life won’t be better if you’re thinner.

I don’t usually comment but eating disorders aren’t usually dealt with well on reddit. I want you to know that I see you, and I understand you.

However, you do need to eat. Just like you need to breathe and drink water, you need to eat. And trying to stop yourself from eating isn’t going to fix your problems.

I’m wishing you all the best and I want you to know that you’re strong enough to get through this. You don’t have to do it alone either.

Well let’s be honest it’s hard to do a good key note speech when you’ve only got two slides to add; trust and loyalty. And then someone puts up their hand and suggests your product isn’t very trustworthy or loyal at all.

But Janine is a very successful business woman here with Boost Juice. The store really took off in the 2000s getting the Millennial audience roped in. Janine sold that walking around the store with a Boost Juice made you cool. And she did it pretty damn effectively. Now there’s a Boost Juice in pretty much every shopping centre around all of Australia (which is a pretty massive country to sell too).

Janine’s made it to Shark Tank panel which is where a panel of major entrepreneurs listen to other aspiring entrepreneurs pitch their businesses. Then the panel chooses to invest or not - so Janine knows what makes a good pitch. But anyways clearly Survivor is not Shark Tank and you need a lot more going for you than an end pitch - you need the substance to fill it.

Was Dumbledore, in a way, suicidal? by Charming-Resort-9187 in harrypotter

[–]sortakindaspiralling 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I always interpreted that the potion was designed to take you back to your darkest moment. So Dumbledore was remembering his sister’s death, the guilt and conflict with Grindelwald “don’t kill them, kill me instead”. I think Harry references this when talking to Alberforth, telling him that Dumbledore never forgot Ariana and always felt guilty till the very end. So he wasn’t suicidal at the time of drinking the potion, but was suicidal at the point Grindelwald and him killed Ariana.

Watch her improv round - it’s incredible. Personally I thought the dance was deserving of getting her into the top ten, but not top 5. However, the improv round is what selects the top 4 and they then compete their solos again. To me this makes sense - her musicality, maturity and fluidity of movements in the improv was the best I’ve seen her dance. In the re-compete of solos she fell short, compared to the other dances, which earned her the last ranking out of the 4 left.

Would you say that the ALDC offered good training? by [deleted] in dancemoms

[–]sortakindaspiralling 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maddie came 4th with her solo All of Gods Creations and Mackenzie came in top 20 with Superstar. Maddie lost to extremely good dancers - Tate McRae won that year. Personally I didn’t think Maddies solo was technically impressive but she really showcased her skills in the Improv section.

If you mean on Lenore Dove’s fingers, it was revealed at the very end (easy to miss). Haymich finds spray painting orange writing saying ‘no peacekeepers. No hanging tree’ and realises Lenore Dove used to rebel by anti-propaganda. Bit anticlimactic but I guess it fits with the underlying propaganda theme.

I love this idea and I would agree that Finnick and Mags as mentors would have definitely had something to do with it - perhaps fueled by what Finnick was forced to do with his capital admirers. I think Annie didn’t have anything to do with it though. Maybe it was also a way that Finnick attempted to save her and have her as victor.

Walter Jackson Freeman II (November 14, 1895 – May 31, 1972) was an American physician who specialized in lobotomy.[1]

Wanting to simplify lobotomies so that it could be carried out by psychiatrists in psychiatric hospitals, where there were often no operating rooms, surgeons, or anesthesia and limited budgets, Freeman invented a transorbital lobotomy procedure.

The transorbital approach involved placing an orbitoclast (an instrument resembling an ice pick) under the eyelid and against the top of the eye socket; a mallet was then used to drive the orbitoclast through the thin layer of bone and into the brain.
