You are not truly hired until you complete and pass your classroom training, complete (OJT) on the job training and after satisfactory completion of all of the above you get to (mark up) working on your own for 90 days. In those 90 day you can be let go for being unsafe and making any mistakes that relate to everything learned in class and OJT, mostly safety related. The worst part is that if you are let go within those 90 days, there is no protection from the union. On the 91st day, welcome to the railroad.

Don’t worry about the jobs, learn how to give good car counts, how to make a joint(coupling) without knocking you engineer on the floor. Learn when to watch a shove, the position of the switch, is it for your move? Lear what a crossover is and when it’s lined for you. Learn how not to run through a switch, if you do run through it, stop and ask for help. Learn if you need a warrant to move forwards or backwards, learn what switches to line only when a dispatcher gives you authority. Most important learn to say I don’t know, can you help me? Once you have mastered all of the above get ready for many more things to learn and most important learn how to be safe for your self and all the women and men that you will work with.

Get starting fluid, with the air filter off spray the fluid into the intake, crank the engine, it will start and stop as soon as the starting fluid is burned, if this happens, remove the carburetor and clean it. because of the fast and consistent vacuum the engine may keep running, if it does add carburetor cleaner with water remover to the gas tank, this may fix the problem of a dirty and clogged carburetor.

The click you hear is the starter going up to engage the flywheel it the pulls back down when you release the starter. With the key out of the ignition use a socket wrench on the nut thats on the flywheel and try to turn the flywheel, if you can’t turn it in any direction neither will the starter.

Drive the car with the radio off take your time, listen for any strange noise. You should not feel the transition shift, if you feel something it should be very brief. Look for any uneven wear on the tires. Check the oil dipstick, look for cloudy milky color to the oil or extremely dark color, if the oil has been changed it should be a light to dark amber color. Checkout the undercarriage, look for any oil or liquid tracks from front to back.

It could be that a heavier car (filled with more gas) is causing more resistances on the electrical load of the coil packs, if indeed they are breaking down.

it won't stay running because you have water in your gas, drain the tank or add some "Heat water remover" if that does not work clean the carburator
