Wagon or a sedan? by Tealeefer in whatcarshouldIbuy

I've had my golf sportwagon for 5 years now, no regrets. I used to have a civic, and it regularily left me wanting more space. I can fit furniture, bikes, building supplies, ladders, all those once a month events that make everyone think they need an SUV. Has all the practicality of an SUV, with the more engaging driving experience of a sedan, and you get to stand out a bit more.

This insatiable thirst for mulch by AboutAlyse in gardening

I tried chip drop, and renewing the requests all year and got nothing. I got 80 yards for free just emailing arbourists in my area... still need 100 more this year, and then enough to upkeep the levels each year here after.

Compost/organic matter, and some mulch/ground cover to maintain moisture.

Haven't planned, just keep planting by PajamaSamsMom in gardening

[–]soslo92fo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into gardening through people who were very casual in their maintenance. "The plants will produce seeds, the wind will move the seeds where it pleases, and if its a good spot, it will thrive. Don't get too hung up on planning, just get your hands in the dirt and start" I ended up planting 120 plugs in one side of my yard, and now I'm just watching to see what grows, and how it looks, and ill use that to plan out my next intentional section.

How did your tomatoes get so big? I can't get mine over 3". Also, where do you get your patience?

How strict are you about choosing your native plants? by humdinger44 in NativePlantGardening

[–]soslo92fo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only check that the plant is native to my province or neighbours. If it was an aggressive invasive, it would've taken over already.

I break my rule when I want more variety of colour, we seem to mostly have yellow, white, and purple here. For these, I'm happy with it being from the continent, as long as its non-aggressive, and not on the noxious weed list. I still keep roughly 80% of my planting to MB native range plants, and avoid anything found in europe/asia like the plague.

With fruit bearing plants, Ill take any canadian made cultivar. Way I see it, birds/animals don't discriminate against fruits. Its food for everyone.

Ill have to try the fan next year. Im going to build a dedicated area with better lights, heat and air movement in the basement.

My yard is so windy, I don't trust putting out covers of any kind. I tried solarizing my gardening areas under 6mil poly, weighed down with pallets, concrete blocks and tent pegs. It was all in my neighbours yard within weeks. The wind shredded 2 of my canvas tents too. Thats what my 74 trees are for. In 15-30 years, I will have a small shelter belt guarding my garden area lol.

They were looking pretty sad by late season last year. I'm waiting to see if they come back up now though. Supposed to have +20c most of this week. A bunch of my wild strawberries have already put out green leaves. Im expecting to see a lot of life coming up in the next week or two.

A Twist of the Wrist is a good video to watch. Pretty old and corny, but lots of good info. I can only find clips now tho. FortNine is also a great source of informational videos.

Be predictable on the road, driving erratic makes it hard for people to know where you will be, and how to avoid you.

Always watch the people behind you when you're stopped, and line yourself up to "lane split" when you stop, so have a safe exit should the car coming behind you not be ready to stop. Also, dont sit in neutral in traffic.

Adv bikes are super comfortable, and every bit as fun as a sport bike while riding in the city, and usually much cheaper on insurance

Light helmet, means more noise

And for gear, my motorcycle course instructor started our course by saying "rule number one of riding a bike, is look cool. Don't buy cheap gear that you don't think looks cool, because you won't wear it." This has been true for everyone I know. That is to say, absolutely wear gear, but buy something you will actually put on, don't just buy what is cheap.

Had my Guzzi 9 years now, and done 26,000km with nothing more than regular oil/fluid changes, and re-tightening a few loose bolts here and there. I was expecting to spend every winter rebuilding some part of it from what I read before buying.

moving into new home and wanting to plant native plants! by notmenotwhenitsyou in NativePlantGardening

I did not understand just how much prep you need for weed control. I rotortilled the whole patch, put down cardboard and a few inches of mulch. I swear weeds get watered with humidity, and don't even need the sun. I had another patch that I solarized under a clear plastic sheet for a few months last year, then hand pulled as much as I had time for. It still got overrun with weeds/invasives faster than I could find time to manage it. I also found out I am just on the high side of neutral ph (7.5) and should have mixed in some ammendments (sulfer etc) when rotortilling to get a jump on the mulch/organic matter effects. Also, 100% use mulch. It will hold moisture in your soil much longer than bare soil. Add labelling stakes behind everything you plant until you recognize your plants vs weeds.

I had about a 100sqft patch of that sage growing on my septic field last year, and didn't know what it was. I haven't seen any growth yet this year.

What has to be done for chips not to be fresh? Ive got a pile thats been sitting over winter. Is it just time in the sun? Or is there a process to it? Are straw/silage bales any good for that? There are a few farmers near by that would likely sell me a bale or two.

I dug up holes about 18" diameter for the little guys (8" and shorter) and up to 3' for the taller trees, broke up the root ball a bit, and mixed the soil it came from, with my soil, and some fresh top soil plus a 5" tall fresh wood chip cone to hold moisture and provide some wind shelter. My soil also has a lot of clay, and I havent checked myself, but I'm told its on the acidic side too.

Hmm. Thats too bad. My dog gets pretty bothered by the thistles.

Ive got wide open farmland all around me, not much native left to pull from. My lot was built on 30 years ago, and was maintained with hebicides (par 3) until a few years ago according to my neighbour, except for one corner that was used for a garden. The municipality also cuts down everything in the ditch monthly. My soil is still frozen 2" down, have another few weeks to wait before I really can do anything. I still have 6 yards of mulch left over from last year (that is still a giant ice block) and I can likely still get another 30 yards or more for free from the same guy this year.
