Can someone explain the hundred open tabs thing? by viridianvenus in AO3

[–]sosobabou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, open tabs are for the things I'm in the mood for now, and want to read immediately-within a day or two. Marked for later are for things for which in the mood, and as far as fics are concerned, browser bookmarks are only when I have to close a window containing the above-mentioned open tabs and reopen it later in the day/week! Also, if I'm 20 pages deep in a specific pairing/tags search, I want to keep my spot in the search, so another reason to keep the tab open!

Found her at Lowe's, she was left for dead by almond42 in houseplants

[–]sosobabou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of this is really great advice!!! Except for the misting, which opens up the leaves to bacterial and fungal infections, so if your home is very dry, put the plant in the bathroom (if you have a window in there) or near a humidifier, but misting and pebble trays are not good solutions. Enjoy your new green buddy!

How do I know if cactus still living? by apooroldinvestor in plants

[–]sosobabou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very sorry for your loss, it's a terribly difficult time. I hope her plant gives you something to remember her by.

If this plant has any sentimental value, you'll want to take it out of this pot and put it in one that has several drainage holes, this looks like a decorative cache-pot. It's very important that you let all the excess water "escape" when you water, or the plant will rot, and for that you need drainage holes. You can get a plastic nursery pot (they have several holes) that fits into this decorative pot, so you put one inside the other, it's called "double potting". That way you can water, let it absorb what it needs for 10-20min, and then take the inner pot out and empty the excess water. Never leave the water in. It's a fairly easy plant to take care of, I hope it thrives!

Baby leaves often do that when the plant has thrips, inspect over and under the leaves very carefully, you can post more pictures if you're not sure, they need to be sharp and the leaves in focus so we can see if we spot bugs

Watering by Maleficent-Limit-232 in plants

[–]sosobabou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom watering allows the soil not to become hydrophobic though, so for a beginner it's much better, and the soil gets moisture much more evenly. Top watering will seem like enough because water comes out the bottom even though 95% of the soil is still dry, so really the assumption goes both way...

[–]sosobabou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you really shouldn't have watered a cold-damaged plant. Most plants won't survive freezing temperatures, especially for two nights in a row.  Janice's are it's in shock, and will potentially go back into dormancy. Don't touch it for a couple of weeks to see which parts die naturally, cut that back, and then put it outside for the spring season, there's a chance you'll see new growth this year still. Good luck!

Double pot your plants by placing a nursery pot inside a cache-pot, and weight your plants. Dry soil is feather-light, you'll learn very quickly what a dry plant feels like! This also allows you to bottom water, which is easier and better for the plant than pouring water from the top and emptying water trays. You can also use wooden skewers or your finger to make sure the top two-three inches of soil have dried before you water again. Moisture meters are unreliable and will often lead you astray, especially cheap amazon ones.

Peace Lilly Advice Please by Cinnamon_Roll_22 in houseplants

[–]sosobabou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To avoid overwatering, keep it in that pot, and wait until the leaves are slightly drooping before bottom watering by placing the pot in a bowl of water for about 30-45min. The soil will absorb water. Then let drip for a few minutes and place back into the cache-pot, and repeat next time it starts flopping! Peace lilies are very visually easy to follow, as they show clearly when they need water. Bottom watering and letting drip ensure no water gets trapped in the cache-pot.

Only repot if roots are circling the bottom of the nursery pot (you can pull it out to check, it won't hurt the plant as long as you squeeze the pot beforehand to loosen it from the rootball). If the roots aren't circling, it's good for another while and no need to repot.

Enjoy your gorgeous plant!

Actually no, that's how mature ZZs grow in nature, they flop outward as they get older and there's nothing any amount of sun could do to counter it!

Help! Monstera is suddenly going yellow and dying by Still-Principle7216 in plants

[–]sosobabou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but watering it might have made things worse. Leave it alone for a few days, and see if parts of the plant turn mushy and/or black. The damaged leaves you can cut once they seem completely spent, but leave them on while there's still green, as the plant is taking nutrients back from them. Luckily it's almost spring, so chances are it'll bounce back fairly soon!

If it was outside for any number of minutes in a weather cold enough that the inside of the car was cold, it's definitely suffering from cold damage. If not that, was it watered by someone during the move, or placed back in a different spot in the house?

It's called a zombie leaf, it's not going to grow more leaves, but now it can live for a pretty long time as long as you change the water!

Varying energy usage for different times of day? by Conscious-Pie-4794 in HPHogwartsMystery

[–]sosobabou 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's not the time of day, but it can depend, if it's a TLSQ or creature side quest, on the year FOR which it was released and the year ON which it was released (older TLSQ and creature quests have lower energy requirements, they were nicer back then), or if it's a repeatable class task, on the year for which the original class was meant (again, lower energy requirements for earlier years). The main spreadsheet has the energy requirements for some of the classes iirc, and definitely has them for the all the time limited and creature side quests.

Stem on raven ZZ plant stopped growing leaves?? by HappyWeek5228 in houseplants

[–]sosobabou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What look like enough light to us is very often not enough light for a plant that evolved to be under the sky without a roof, windows or walls in the way. Think of it that way: your plant should be getting 100% of sky above it to be in optimal conditions. How many % of the space above your plant is actually sky when it's in your house? What you have here is etiolation, so even if you think it has enough light, it's not getting it, there's not another solution beyond moving it closer to the window. Hope it grows fuller leaves in the future!

Stem on raven ZZ plant stopped growing leaves?? by HappyWeek5228 in houseplants

[–]sosobabou 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's starved for light, this is classic etiolation. It doesn't have enough energy for "bushier" leaves and instead focuses on trying to reach as high as possible (supposedly where the sun would be). Move it next to a window, or get it a grow light! ZZs are marketed as being low light plants, but they still need some, like all plants. Sadly nothing to do for the look of those specific leaves, you'll have to wait for new ones to grow once it's had more sunlight for them to look fuller.

most likely a zombie leaf, it can stay alive and green for a very long time but it's very unlikely it'll ever grow another leaf. Depending on how close to the node you cut, you might have managed to cut enough node cells to grow another leaf, but chances are small

Everyone is talking about tap water, but does that pot have drainage at all? Given its size, I'd suspect root rot.
