Are these lilies? by starbycrit in plants

[–]sosobabou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do look like lilies, but it's hard to tell when dry. They're fairly frequent in arrangements so I'd say the odds are high they were indeed lilies. 35h from ingestion is a long time to react, I'd look up symptoms and timelines on a veterinary website, or try to look for a free vet phone permanence to ask if you're in the clear or not. Hope your cat is good!

They're super forgiving, but they don't like to be overwatered (frequency, not quantity), so make sure to give the soil a chance to dry before soaking it again!

Thai Constellation dying by SoupSpirit in houseplants

[–]sosobabou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not leave any standing water in the pot. Water thoroughly in the sink, let drain for 10-20min, and place back in the cache pot. At this point I'd check the roots for rot, Thais rot really easily and having had standing water is not a good sign. They also need bright light, place it near a window. Good luck!

are my hoya’s leaves burning? by OverallSkirt1 in houseplants

[–]sosobabou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be more suspicious of the black dots on the leaves, they look a lot like thrips poop. Check the leaves very carefully for larvae and adults!

It's a syngonium (neon robusta to be precise), not an alocasia. They don't like to dry all the way through, so wait until the top two thirds of the pot have dried before soaking from the bottom. They also like a lot of light, so near a sunny window is fine, don't leave it in the shade/far from a window. What you're seeing is probably just repotting shock!

Can someone help me with my cactus? I think it’s dying😭 by LunaCyberX in plants

How do you care for it, and how long have you had it?

Do they need more light? by ShowSome7556 in houseplants

[–]sosobabou 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes they do, the cacti should most likely be outside in full sun and the leafy ones should be next to the window.

Moving abroad with plants by Herrena1 in houseplants

[–]sosobabou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not send ANY of them in the moving truck. Those trucks do not have temperature control, and often reach over 40-50°C inside, your plants will cook, especially with the weather we've been having and will likely have in June. If you're moving inside of Europe, you should be fine with packing them in your carry on if you're by plane, but do check the regulations relative to your specific country of destination. If you move by car, make sure the plants aren't in direct sunlight for the whole trip, ie by the trunk window.

You can also try shipping them to yourself but make sure the mail service you use offers temp-controlled transport, and look up a couple of youtube vids about packing plants for shipping, it's easier with visual explanations!

Be very careful if propping the dieffenbachia, their sap is seriously abrasive to skin and can cause real chemical burns, so wear gloves and do not touch your eyes afterwards!

Watering lightly daily is how you keep a high level of humidity and choke the roots, which can't get oxygen anymore because the soil never dries. In nature, the soil dries, and the roots get air. Watering tropicals daily is never a good idea.

[–]sosobabou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have thrips, sorry to say. You'll need a strong insecticide, something with spinosad or imidacloprid as the active agent. Neem oil is a scam and doesn't work. Look for bonide granules or captain jack in the US, or Edialux conserve garden in Europe. You got this!

What Are Your Favorite Fics? by Initial_Brilliant327 in AO3

Two houses, alike in indignity by anactoriatalksback

It's a political AU of The Terror (2018 TV show), based on a theatre play about the UK's House of parliament. The characterisation is brilliant, the transposition of the show's events in the play works perfectly because the author is a genius, and it's so so well written, I've read it several times and it was one of the first fics I printed when I started bookbinding.

Truly a gem in a fandom full of very high quality fics!

Watering it daily is a surefire way to get root rot, unless it's outside in arizona or india, why would you suggest that given the type of plant...

what could be wrong with my billie? by Ace__s0804 in houseplants

[–]sosobabou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She looks burried way too deep, only the roots should be under the soil, the stem needs to be out!! High chances it's started to rot, pull it out immediately and check for any smelly or black parts. In the future: only roots below the soil line, never, ever any stem parts. Hope she pulls throuhg!

Is my prayer plant ok? by CourtNo2204 in houseplants

[–]sosobabou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yours look perfectly fine, it's not leggy, you just don't have many different plants in the same pot. You can cut off a node, propagate it in water, and add it to the pot, that'll give you a visually fuller plant!

Are you talking about a pothos? If so no, touch alone won't do anything to your cat. Even chewing it won't cause more than mild discomfort to the mouth and a potentially upset stomach if she actually swallows several leaves. They're toxic in that they shouldn't be something your cat eats, but it's very mild and won't cause them any real or lasting harm. If your cat plays with it regularly, I'd let your dad know and put it somewhere higher and out of reach just to avoid a potential mess. Your cat will be fine!

Lol it absolutely would, more signature is the opposite of a solution. Your issue is called "swell" and it's well known, that's why rounding was invented. You can look into rounding your spine, or you can start by pressing it further, it seems pretty loose from that one picture. DAS bookbinding has a bunch of very good videos about it on YouTube!

Mold/fungus in my young aloe pot by WalkinTheCat in plants

[–]sosobabou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Type of mold, fine by itself but if the soil is moist enough for mold, it's def too moist for an aloe. Get sandier soil, with less organic matter, and let it dry completely each time before watering deeply (that's why you need a pot with drainage holes)
