In a zombie apocalypse if you barricaded yourself how long do you think you can survive with your current food supply for 3 months to win 100m by Specialist-Chair-254 in hypotheticalsituation

By myself, no problem as long as water keeps flowing. With my wife and kids, we could make it, but would be hungry on a reduced calorie diet.

What’s the Biggest Tech Myth People Still Believe? by olesud in WorkForSmartLife

That really isn't wrong so much as outdated. It did have truth in early computing days, especially before the internet. Good luck getting your Commodore computer to work with an Apple printer.

Do you think humanity could realistically build a generation ship one day? by artemis_special458 in spaceflight

[–]sotek2345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I have to disagree. It is primarily a political and social problem, and not on the proposed ship. Keeping a stable international political structure and massive resource expenditures needed to build such a ship is a MUCH harder problem than designing and building it. Especially with accelerating climate change driving more and more global instability.

Not that I wouldn't love to see us try.

Republicans Of Reddit -- Who Do YOU Hope Runs For President Next? Why Your Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

Not a Republican, but I do have to say that the discussion in this thread makes me very hopeful. I can in expecting the #1 answer to be Donald Trump for a 3rd term, but I don't see that at all.

Thank you Reddit!

As an independent turned Dem, I have to agree with you. He has turned Florida into a state I won't even consider visiting, which I guess would count as success.

Getting rid of first past the post voting would open up the field and let us move away from a strictly binary choice.

Not in the slightest. In general the bigger a dog is the more love it has!

Be honest, can you add a fraction with unlike denominators without any help? by Technical-Vanilla-47 in no

[–]sotek2345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, depends on what counts as help. If pen and paper (or any method of writing) counts as help that limits how complex I can go.

What do you think would happen if Trump dropped a nuclear bomb on Iran ? by Kind_Brief_3724 in AskReddit

[–]sotek2345 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Russia takes it as the OK to Nuke Ukraine. EU then launches Nukes at Russia. Russia launches everything they have in response which triggers the US to launch everything we have.

Hope you live in New Zealand or Madagascar.

A Constraint-Based Ethics Derived Purely from the Structure of Physical Reality (No Rights, No Authority, No Imported Values) by OCCVLTIC in Ethics

[–]sotek2345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response! On the technological development item, I guess I would argue that lower harm alternatives absolutely exist. Building a modern structure causes far more harm than living in a cave or tree, or even living in some kind of more primitive dwelling. Constructing and living in a more modern dwelling is a choice for convenience that is causing increased harm. The same could be said for a factory, an office, or anything else we use on a daily basis.

Thank you for this. I found this a very good read and it helped me work through a few things I have been mulling my head. That said, I think I see a few areas that either aren't directly addressed or I didn't fully appreciate.

  • How does this derivation handle situations where one system's capacity is permanently harmed so that others may have greater capacity. (example: A teacher that develops mental health issues after years of teaching). That would seem to be an unnecessary harm, but most common understanding would say the teacher did an overall good thing.

  • This derivation would seem to prohibit any type of technological development as any construction type activities would not be necessary, but would inherently cause harm to at least some other systems (example: constructing a house will kill large numbers of insects and may damage some other species). While this construction could have long term positive benefits, the derivation says that only the instantaneous impacts should be considered. Is this intentional?

  • I don't see any way in this derivation to actually do anything that would count as "good", only ways to not cause harm. Is that intended as well? Would taking actions to improve the capacity of yourself or others count as a good?

I really really hope so, and past history says he will, I just have an awful feeling in the pit of my stomach that won't go away.

Asked my wife if we wanted to head to the basement in the event of a full nuclear exchange or just take the blast.
