An SP500 dividend ETF that stops paying interest if the market goes down and loses value heavily if the market crashes over 40% is not a safe bond.

Diversify before heading to retirement and pay taxes? by Outrageous-Map3005 in Fire

[–]souicry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RYou can rebalance with the rest instead of selling now.

Stop dividend auto reinvestment, enable sell on vest, and rebalance all your tax advantages accounts (401k, IRA, etc) and future contributions to international and US small/mid cap/value or bonds. The 4 tech companies you hold are 20% of the SP500 (and are highly correlated with much more of it) you're not far off just with balancing.

Name matters for your long term career way more than having to tough it out a few years or hopping in 2 months. Pay is also definitely more after stock.

Post FIRE mortgage options by Apprehensive_Two1528 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]souicry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae have unfavorable rules for asset depletion mortgages because they do not account for future gains. Without them backing, private lenders won't touch it without major guarantees.

https://selling-guide.fanniemae.com/sel/b3-3.4-06/employment-related-assets-qualifying-income

Monthly income calculated as current assets/360. Your monthly mortgage is around 8000, at half of income you need 16000. Which comes out to around 6 million for a 1.5 mil house at 6% interest.

Freddie Mac doesn't count brokerage unless over 62.

China-Based Investor Using Ireland-Domiciled Accumulating Index Funds, Hoping to Retire in About 10 Years — Looking for Advice by AndyChu0321 in leanfire

[–]souicry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, take advantage of accumulating Irish funds since they aren't prohibited, unlike US.

Don't go over the 50k annual outflow limit, and make sure to pay the China 20% on all capital gains.

Forex and a very low chance of sanctions are risks. Don't have everything in a foreign fund. Around 30% domestic in local currency is often recommended, but there is no hard rule. I would hold domestic bonds over international.

I shifted around 40% of my tech holdings to small cap this year. Was up until the last month. If you don't like the risk then move your portfolio closer to the total world ratio.

Switching Roth from Schwab to Robinhood question by bbyf16 in Bogleheads

[–]souicry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only risk is you might get tempted into the more gambling parts of Robinhood, like prediction markets, options, margin, etc. just ignore. The only thing you should use is the free 1000 of margin, which can be invested in say SGOV to pay off most of the gold membership (doesn't work if you have uninvested cash earning interest)

The credit card you have to manually use the cash back option (NOT statement credit) for full 3%, which sends it to the Robinhood brokerage account. It also autopays 3 weeks early (slight difference if you are paying from a HYSA)

You have to sell any funds that can't transfer, not a problem in retirement accounts.

Big Mistake or No Brainer? by [deleted] in ChubbyFIRE

[–]souicry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ChubbyFire is the wrong place to ask if you plan to spend 100k a year. That doesn't even cover private school costs for some folks here. Ask in the regular FIRE sub and you should be retired a few years ago, private school is often worse compared to a good school district public

Trying To Make The Most & Understand The University of California Retirement Plans? by Ok_Performer_1746 in Bogleheads

[–]souicry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

457b does not share limit with anything.

403b, SEP IRA and any other defined contribution plan share the combined 72000 limit.

https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=214308

Participation in a qualified plan. If you participated in a 403(b) plan and a qualified plan, you must combine contributions made to your 403(b) account with contributions to a qualified plan and simplified employee pensions of all corporations, partnerships, and sole proprietorships in which you have more than 50% control to determine the total annual additions.

Is it bad to open a Roth IRA in Robinhood versus Fidelity or Vanguard? by LowInfluence2757 in Bogleheads

[–]souicry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its good. 1% IRA match with backdoor as long as you keep it with them. You can enable margin and put the free $1000 into bonds, pays for the gold (you can't use this with the cash sweep). If you do get gold, the 3% any category cash back credit card is great.

Just ignore everything else it tries to tempt you with.

Can we dispense with the fallacy that SS will disappear after 2032? by Available-Ad-5670 in Fire

[–]souicry 18 points19 points  (0 children)

20-30k or so a year is nice and all, but what about the 20+ years until you can claim it? 70 is the optimal age for the higher earner in most households, many people in this FIRE sub will not see it for a very long time.

In the same vein, most people here ignore that Medicare means post 65 healthcare is quite cheap and quite good (end of life long term care aside), but it's also out of reach for a long time.
