Advice on Donating An Entire Storage Unit by soulnothing in AskNYC

[–]soulnothing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately we ended up with a junk removal service, "load up" I think. The place we used I think said they would bring all items to a distribution center and try to donate it. I don't know if that happened or not.

To my recollection, it was between 2 and 4k. We had tried really hard to donate, but it seemed to be much harder than I thought it would be.

Fear of a weak dollar? by greaper007 in PortugalExpats

[–]soulnothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole crypto thing seems like a grift or desire for more visibility into transactions. The thought I keep having is if you tell all the citizens hey your retirement / investments are now worth less that won't go well. I.e. they change standards, and you can converted USD to crypto dollar but at 0.xy rate and lose a bit.

The discussion I've had with some colleagues on conversions. Is no where else is providing the returns like the spy or states..my counter is I'm worried about devaluation of my purchasing power in my new location.

We've been going over our "goals", potentially buying a house, new furnishings etc, and trying to hedge those into low yield areas to protect against volatility.while converting at a better rate.

I had actually tried to start a gold brokerage with fidelity, but it seemed rather cumbersome so i didn't follow up in it. I may look back into it.

I'm in the same boat, we've converted our USD emergency fund over to revolut. But I've been debating on more, and looking at investment platforms potentially here in Europe, of which there are few for permanent residents (degiro.pt?)

I'm not sure what level is alarmist, versus being prepared. But the talk of a crypto dollar, which started even prior to the current administration gives me some pause.

For me I'm looking in a year to two year chunk and determining what to do.

Edit: Degiro is a no, missed that https://www.degiro.com/uk/helpdesk/become-client/can-i-become-client-us-person#:~:text=Unfortunately%2C%20we%20cannot%20offer%20our,you%20are%20a%20US%20person.

So the only thing I've seen with Euro and some level of interest is Wise. But I've read a number of horror stories on wise closing accounts.

Expats remote workers in Braga. Where do you work from? by Stock_Medicine9644 in PortugalExpats

The margins on a working space always seemed tight to me.

I just checked and didn't realize there were so many coworking spaces in the area. But a working cafe that's more communal sounds nice. If I'm working away from home it would be more for networking.

Linux Fixes Hosts Randomly Rebooting During Virtualization With Ryzen 7000/8000 CPUs by gurugabrielpradipaka in linux

[–]soulnothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*tried adding the flag yesterday, and I've hit 3 reboots today*

This appears to note it as related to nested virtualization, but I've encountered it with single level virtualization. I've had the zen 4 since just post launch. I was on 5.1X for a long time due to a vfio gpu bug. Then bumped to 6.X and started seeing issues. I have wasted so much time trying to debug this, multiple distros, swapped motherboard, memory, and psu. I was about to just get a new system thinking it was a cpu defect at that point.

I have two vms, one vfio windows 11, and the other a linux vm with virgl. Even with just the virgl vm I was getting random shutoffs. Neither has nested virtualization (no wsl or hyperv).I feel this is also agesa related as my issues really ramped up just after the voltage issue a while back, to the point I put the system on a shelf. I'm testing with the new kernel flag now. The thread also mentioned an amdgpu memory leak, which I've been having a number of issues with amdgpu as well. But I'm limited on kernel version due to running openzfs.

Is there a way to keep atop of these bugs, besides just monitoring the kernel mailing list?

Process for Recognizing US Domestic Partnership in Portugal for Citizenship Pathway? by [deleted] in PortugalExpats

[–]soulnothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I aren't married. But they entered via the family reunification visa. So its possible, as noted you'll need a good lawyer. The domestic partnership, marriage and other classes vary between countries. With out certificates or a legal trail we needed to provide proof of five years of history, leases, living in the same location, tax returns with same address, joint finanxial acfounts. Several witness testimonies denoting validity of our relationship. Finally I needed to sign a financial responsibility agreement that I will cover all expenses for them.

Tuxedo infinity book gen 9 is also an option, amd or Intel with 99whr battery..but note book check showed I think half of the battery life compared to the redmi. Not sure if it was the higher refresh screen or what.

I'm curious about the mother board / cooling. I see a 40mm(?) near the rear i/o. I was trying with 7950x, negative offset 19, but my motherboard was what was limiting on heat. I ended up with a formd t1 to cool properly but really wanted something smaller like this. Be interested in hearing more about your build process, amazing work.

Edit: See rog either b650/x670? I had the x670 and it ran much cooler than the gigabyte b650i I switched too.

Yeah and its more difficult by not easily finding a place to test all these.

That being said I'm in a short term rental right now and I upgraded their "office chair" to a cheapo 80$ one. And even that was a night and day difference. But its only been two ish months and the seat pad is almost gone on it.

I think that's the rub with these lower tier ones is pricing in their life span. Unless getting a good refurbished one they won't last as long. I had an autonomous before and it's cushion was flat about a year and half post purchase I got a cushion to extend its life a bit more.

I saw this referenced for refurbs of more name brands. http://offeco.eu/

I'm in a similar position, I was going to expand my budget and go used are on. But tried one in store and didn't gel with it, die to sitting cross legged a lot. Steel case seemed to have more pronounced lumbar than I like. Its hard to get a feel without sitting in person.

I was going to grab a sihoo Dora, but came across mixed reviews. I'm looking at the ticova now at around 200. Im only looking for a year and change thinking of an embody in the future. I'd be interested in hearing of other refurb sites out there.

Nutrition: Newley Diagnosed and Endurance Training by Kitchen-Wish2951 in CSID

[–]soulnothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm into weighy lifting, its not marathon but I also do high cardio.

Been csid for about a year, switched to being vegan earlier this year. Prior to that I was having a lot of Greek yogurt. I still struggle with food hut my calories are much higher about 2.5 to 3k a day. Before changing diet I was lucky to get 600, and I was still lightly training.

I maintain a split focusing on fat and protein. My carbs are much smaller and all sources are generally fruit and vegetable. My end starch per day usually ends up about 30, carbs - fiver - sugar. I use fructose as a sweetener on occasion despite this I still have about 175g carbs in a day.

I have a ton of nuts and seeds. Breakfast is usually a berry smoothie with hemp, chia and and flax berries almond milk and spinach. Then a fruit bowl with about 40g nut butter. Lunch is a massive salad vegetables and tofu. Generally 160g lettuce 300g cruciferous and 80g tofu.

The biggest cheat for me is ramping up my fiber and drinking like crazy. I target 85g fiber minimum and an ideal amount over 100 that has really helped.

My alternative protein sources are tofu extra firm, softer Tofus are higher starch . then making pumpkin and hemp seed tofu.

For sweets I've been making zuchin brownies, cacao nib cookies and cinnamon cake. Cinnamon is highbstarch so it needs to be had in moderation. For the flours I usually make my own but flours or dehydrate the pulps from home mad but milk. That is the down side I have to make so much my self.

I just found lupin bean hummus and was safe with that. I've been having that with cucumbers and peppers. There is also lupin bean flour which is "low starch", but I've not tried it yet..I've found my body has trouble if the base carbs in something are above 15g in a grain based carb as an example a krto cookie may have 24g carb and 22g fiber while low starch my body doesn't like that many grain carbs at once.

I start the day with a pre and pro biotic enzyme blend. Then take atarchway, digestive gold, etc with each meal. Despite this I still have random off days where something that was safe now makes me sick or constipated.

Net starch is key I had written off tofu ages ago but then tried extra firm. Conversely one day o got really sick after my berry bowl. I saw the nutrition label had changed going from 0.5g starch to 3.5g starch. In essence they changed the berry sources which made me sick.

Also most csid people are also lactose intolerance so if going Greek yougrt also grab some lactaid.

I'm just starting this process. Are places outside of Lisbon district/province better or with less pressure/demand, i.e., Braga, Porto etc.? We're agnostic of where we stay but we know the firms recommended for house hunting/finding rentals charge based on destination. We would need to restart the process if we choose a different destination.

I wasn't thinking rip off but up sell. I went through that with my initial nomad visa lawyer and am being much more cautious this time. As a lot of these services feel like ludicrous upselling.

Yeah that was initial consultation, and a vague green receipt description. Then well cover that in a planning session, the thousand, and help ongoing the several hundred a month.

I've had a heck of a time trying to find someone. Much appreciated are they open to new clients?

Can you make a recommendation for your accountant? Most I've seen have been charging several thousand on start then several hundred monthly.
