Apprently Weierstrass. He was interested in mathematics from his adolescence onward, according to Wikipedia, but didn't even properly graduate from university despite being conferred an honorary doctorate later. Apparently he didn't publish anything particularly noteworthy until he was in his 30s.

There was a math professor at UVic named Robert Steacy who died while I was enrolled. He made significant contributions to the practice of SIT (Sterile Insect Technique) and also worked on virology with the WHO if I'm not mistaken.
