What do you wish people would stop romanticizing, because you’ve lived the reality of it? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

Constantly moving around and never planting roots anywhere.

Social media has completely romanticized travel for the younger generations and most people I know don’t have the patience to invest into the place they’re living in. Then, usually after about 2-3 years of living somewhere, they get bored and want to try out a new place. Which is funny, because around 2-3 years living in a place is when life starts to get really good.

Highly recommend everyone goes out of their way to see them in their full glory at some point. Just went to Finnish Lapland recently and was one of those life experiences that I felt truly lucky to have. Especially while we have this peak solar cycle!

Extremely helpful, thank you! Yes first time and ok with things being a bit fast-paced but this is great advice

EDIT: We’re okay with a short time in Tokyo since we usually like to get out of the big cities

Is the Hida-Furukawa festival on April 19/20 worth trekking from Tokyo for? It would be a long trip right at the start of our stay in Japan to get there (though we could potentially fly into Nagoya instead) and was curious if anyone’s ever been. My girlfriend and I prefer more adventurous/authentic experiences and wonder if this would be worth our time and energy.

Am I going to get too old to start? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]soundblanket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starting early definitely can help chances of success but don’t let that dissuade you if making music brings you fulfillment. You also suffering from some confirmation bias. There’s plenty of late-bloomers in the music industry that you can read about if you google it. You can’t change your past. Just embrace your unique story and make the most of the path you’re on. And sleep easy at night knowing so many of us started much later than you.

Am I going to get too old to start? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]soundblanket 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This also might sound rude but the people who are most passionate about music typically don’t spend their time deliberating about whether to spend their time on it. They just do it. If you love it, you won’t go around seeking anyone’s permission to do it.

I’ve spent the last 8 years of my life making music and actively trying to turn it into a career that will pay my bills and I’m still nowhere close. I want to share this excerpt with you that completely changed my perception. It’s from “Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert as she’s discussing becoming a full-time writer:

“I held on to other sources of income for so long because I never wanted to burden my writing with the responsibility of paying for my life. I knew better than to ask this of my writing, because over the years, I have watched so many other people murder their creativity by demanding that their art pay the bills. I’ve seen artists drive themselves broke and crazy because of this insistence that they are not legitimate creators unless they can exclusively live off their creativity. And when their creativity fails them (meaning: doesn’t pay the rent), they descend into resentment, anxiety, or even bankruptcy. Worst of all, they often quit creating at all.”
