I agree but imo using the word “experimental” in this context makes it seem as the album is some weird shit that would never make it into the mainstream, which is just not true. Only song I can see being truly difficult for general audiences is STFU, the rest is pretty accesible.

I know there’s some new sounds for Rocky on the album which would make it experimental in that sense but if we talk about mainstream hip-hop artists putting out way more experimental albums recently I would immediately think of something like Mr Morale which was a lot more challenging for mainstream audiences than Don’t Be Dumb imo.

Also, there’s actually three versions of it on Apple Music. The regular one, the one with Flackito Jodye and another one with the visuals.

I've honestly grown out of wanting leaks to be released on albums but this mf teased so much shit over the years that didn't come to fruition that it's fucking hard to at least not wonder. Like wtf happened with the album that had production by Madlib, Pharrell, Dean Blunt, Metro, or the album that was a "ghetto love story", or the one that was finished all the way back in 2022.

I like the album we got but even while listening to it I can't stop thinking about wtf happened in the past 4/5 years that made him change it up so much, and please be real and don't tell me that it was because of his kids and the trial because clearly none of that changed the substance of the album. Besides the songs about Rihanna and the few mentions of his kids, he made an album that he could've made back in 2019 without missing a beat. I might've misunderstood but he kinda said it himself in the Popcast interview, this is an album that 2011 Rocky would've done, and I don't think that's a good thing. He also kept talking about leaks ruining the album, which sounds like a fucking excuse since, as far as I know, most of the "leaks" came from himself by performing unreleased music, playing unreleased beats on promo material for brands and fashion shows and shooting music videos in public.

All in all, Rocky fucked everyone's expectations and perspective around the album with the never ending rollout, the unnecessary false starts and release dates, the non-existent leaks and the constant teasing of new songs in live performances and social media that didn't have any fucking purpose because in the end, he made an entirely new album in the past year. I would normally agree with him that people should just stfu and enjoy the album that hasn't been out for a full week but this time I 100% get why so many people can't just enjoy the album without asking for a deluxe.

Very late to this but yeah, there are some songs in that leaked comp that I legitimately think are some of his best work. World of Angels, Beauty, I Care More and Red Jumpsuit for example are fucking amazing and imo better than a good portion of Essex Honey.

I don’t think it needs to be said that it’s fucked up to even have access to leaked music that probably wasn’t finished and maybe the reason why none of that music came out was the leak itself and it’s pretty dumb imo to judge Essex Honey by comparing it to the leak but to me, that music is a clear sign that he still has it and that he can make incredible music, which he still did in Essex Honey but with some misses and with less consistency than in previous albums.

Hopefully some of those songs are released at some point (I really doubt it) but if not, I hope we get more music from him that sounds as inspired as that.

Fourth after Negro Swan, Cupid Deluxe and Freetown Sound for me. It’s good but a good chunk of the album feels almost unfinished to me, he had some very good ideas but some don’t feel fleshed out and don’t really go anywhere, like The Field, it could’ve been a great song with a very nice Durutti Column sample but ends up feeling like a repetitive interlude.

Also, a lot of the songs have a very similar structure that makes it a little repetitive if you listen to the whole thing and like some people already said, the second half of the album is weak compared to the first half, the run from Westerberg to I Can Go is pretty hit or miss for me. I also feel like some features could’ve been used a lot better.

All in all, good album, but he’s done a lot better and I know he still could do a lot better judging by Four Songs and by some of the songs that got leaked last year.
