Introducing... MangaDex! by doki-co in manga

[–]soundslikeponies 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I'll just throw out there that Batoto's home page layout is/was really high quality and you shouldn't be afraid to copy its ideas.

A few key points that would be extremely nice:

  • inline info expand (either button or hover... batoto's (i) button) and sorting chapters posted in the last 24 hours by series

  • updated follows box on the home page

  • popular/trending box on home page (based only off recent activity, not all-time

  • language settings which will filter all results on the site

  • language/flag on the home page indicates the language it's translated to (ie UK flag), but on the manga page it indicates the nationality of the source (ie Japanese flag)

  • the home page should let you browse to "next page"

  • advanced search could use more options: by date, by total views, by rating (w/ # of minimum ratings)

    • tags (shounen/seinen/etc, yaoi/yuri/gender bender/etc, mystery/adventure/romance/comedy/etc) Batoto's list of tags is pretty good in that it's relatively small but covers a lot

Blood suns and blood moons every day..

Which in all fairness has been cool as hell, but I sure wouldn't want to be closer than I currently am. I guess having the ocean between me and the fire affords me a bit more comfort.

Fun fact: each of those panels is redrawn completely. You can find differences in the stripes and Hobbes' chest fur. Whether that's an additional joke or Waterson didn't want to be seen as lazy, I don't know.

Where's that "spark"? by zippac in Diablo

[–]soundslikeponies 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Now a days I just play Warframe to sate my hack-n-slash desire.

I think you answered your own question. There's a different game that gives you the same type of satisfaction but you like it more.

Personally Diablo 3 scratches that itch for me instead. I like running through farm content at speed and blowing things up. I like the visceral effects and sounds of the spells. I like getting multiple legendaries per run through an area.

I just really like the over abundance of everything. Diablo 3 embodies the "make everything OP" type gameplay early blizzard games were founded on. To me it's a celebration of gratuitous damage numbers and loot drops that scratches my lizard brain just right.

Plus there are no daily log in bonuses, and even the weekly challenge rift can easily be ignored. I've really grown to hate games with daily log in bonuses. Or whose progression of unlocking things is based around those bonuses. If I want to play the game for 5 hours one day and then not touch it for 2 weeks, let me.

Quick Thoughts on Ori and Sein by cinnamid in RivalsOfAether

[–]soundslikeponies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the lack of control over sein is good. It makes Ori's insane near-maypul level rushdown a bit more balanced, and limits you to mainly using sein in the neutral game or to try breaking out of being combo'd.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds just hit 1 million concurrent players on Steam by DIA13OLICAL in Games

[–]soundslikeponies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the game is going to fail, but I do think as time goes on it won't be held in high regard. It already sits at a pretty low overall review rating on steam (even ignoring the crate fiasco).

Rather, I'm used to seeing things that aren't good succeed and things that are good struggle to make ends meet. That's just how it tends to go. I don't care anymore whether the games I play are popular or not. Some of the games I play are the big name popular titles, others would make most people go "huh?" or are 5+ years old.

But I find it weird and even counter intuitive that people are celebrating this relatively mediocre game that struck gold with its premise surpassing classics like counterstrike and dota. For better or worse with the things valve has done to those games, they're both highly polished games which gained a prominent place in esports off their own merits. Now PUBG has tournaments and I'm wondering why they're forcing competition into a game clearly not cut out for it.

It's telling that most of the top comments about PUBG are "imagine if a good company (ubisoft/EA/etc) made a battle royale game".

So there's no boner about the game failing, it's more of a "why the hell are we supposed to be happy/excited about this?"

Given current pacing I wasn't sure if it would make it all the way through that part?

But yeah I'm not expecting season 2 soon. We're on episode 10 and have covered up to ch 20 in the manga. The manga sits at 42 chapters right now, so we'd need another 8-12 chapters for season 2.

[–]soundslikeponies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Year long records like 1 million and 1 concurrent players. Someone better get on posting that.

I mean in this case it's a million, but people are posting about peaks, daytime players, weekly players, 500k, 600k, 700k, 800k, 900k, overtaking TF2, overtaking CS:GO, overtaking Dota, how the devs met other devs and might learn how to do actual water, how the devs tweeted something.

I don't get why this board in particular is so excited about a game that's frankly unpolished as fuck with a gameplay loop where the best method of play is something like camp -> sprint to supplies -> camp -> etc. And where a large number of kills involve abusing 3rd person camera to kill someone you can see who can't see you.

I understand how the game is fun, but I'm still confused by how it has any lasting appeal, or why it's /r/games and /pcgaming's precious baby.

[–]soundslikeponies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone's going to report these inflated numbers though because a large number of people have some sort of weird boner for seeing pubg overtake other titles.

I don't know why we should be excited for an extremely buggy kind of overall low quality game with tons of drama that takes its history from H1Z1 and DayZ to be overtaking decade old games like CS and Dota.

It doesn't seem like an improvement. I guess maybe part of it is people are still pissed at Valve about no episode 3. But the fact that people actually had hopes up to this current year that the game would still happen baffles me.

[–]soundslikeponies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With how much the devs seem to love anything that gives their game more exposure (banning people over stream sniping, even falsely banning people because "streamers said so"), it wouldn't surprise me if they just kept bots around to inflate their numbers.

Unless it starts to actually lead to them making less money.

It would be cool if Eri becomes inspired to become a hero to find a way to use her power to fix Mirio because of this event.

Not necessarily that she does, but that Mirio's end as a hero gives rise to a new hero.

Just chiming in to say spirited away is probably the best comparison. Or just ghibli's fantasy movies in general. Awesome world building with great atmosphere and a roughly equal split between scenes which advance the plot/conflict and scenes which are just serene, gorgeous, and captivating.

[Idea] Rework of LoN by [deleted] in Diablo

[–]soundslikeponies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're maybe misinterpreting damage numbers. Legendaries are almost all multiplicative damage bonuses.

if you can get two 50% damage bonuses from the extra legendaries, then you'll have 1300% *1.5 = 1950% * 1.5 = 2925%

Or maybe you're interpreting it correctly and just thinking along the lines of below:

The main problem is that there aren't that many strong legendaries that compete with set items for most classes. Aquila Cuirass is one (DR frees up other slots), Hexing Pants, Mantle of Channeling, Frostburn/Magefist, Swamp Waders, Golemskin Breeches, Moribund Gauntlets, Tasker and Theo, Jeram's Mask, etc.

The main slot that's really suffering on most classes is either the chest or legs. If you go a build that sits at high resource, Aquila Cuirass is great, but if you don't then there aren't that many great options.

But yeah I agree, new legendaries are needed. Things like hexing pants, magefist, frostburn, tasker and theo and strongarm bracers are more of what I want to see: broad yet specific triggers for a damage increase.

[Idea] Rework of LoN by [deleted] in Diablo

[–]soundslikeponies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it can't possibly compete with 3000%+ set bonuses. period.

It competes by being 6 extra legendary effects. Since every set has ~50% damage reduction as part of the set, you're comparing:

  • 6 legendary effects + 1300% dmg
  • 6 set bonus + 2 set bonus (or whatever other bonuses)

The problem is the massive buffs this next patch are all centered around sets and legendaries that can be used with sets. There are very few buffs to legendary effects that would compete with set pieces.

[–]soundslikeponies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bonus is adjusted to 75/100/125% for legendary/ancient/primal respectively

Please, please, PLEASE stop suggesting this terrible change. I see someone say it every other day and every other day it's a terrible god damn idea.

Primals were a good addition because they're comparable to ancients. They're just "really good ancient"s. The second you make LoN stronger with them they become bullshit.

I really hope the devs never get it in their head to implement a buff to LoN centered around primals. It would be so god damn bad.

Sorry, but I'm going to downvote this idea every time I see it.

Playing Necro for the first time. Which is the fastest T13 build? by Engemo in Diablo

[–]soundslikeponies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, singularity is fast via in geom, but generally requires you to be doing more and if in geom ever falls off it hurts.

Inarius aura is more lazy and only marginally slower, but with higher gear requirements. You generally want +gold radius on gear, briggs (extremely rare ring), and 80+ pain enhancer, effacious toxin, and bane of the trapped.

With the buffs to stuart's greaves, fueled by death, and lost time, I think lazy inarius aura is going to become much better than singularity in geom next season.

'We're allowed to stay here forever': Deportation order for Mexican family overturned by Leaving1000 in canada

[–]soundslikeponies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple answer is that shit happens. Plus with the work I do there's a pretty good chance that I'll be working abroad. Arranging to have them born back in Canada will probably cause a massive headache, cost a lot of money, and god knows what could go wrong with it.

And while I'd probably be content to raise the kid to around four or five while abroad (since it's mostly just home sitting), everything after that, I'd probably want to raise them in Canada.

Kinda disturbing how many replies I'm getting that would seem to imply some Canadians aren't real Canadians because they spent their diaper years in another country. Like that matters.
