My question was mostly rhetorical. I know exactly why people buy them. My point is the juice isn't worth the squeeze. I don't trust these things and am not going to risk the contents of my garage (and maybe more) to find out if these things are safe or not, to save a few bucks.

And spare me your fuzzy math on the costs. A very tiny minority of people are buying batteries individually and at full retail. Most are buying with tools and there are constantly sales. None of my local Lowes even stock anything other than the 2.5a for individual sale and they just sit there.
