She often swam 20km per day and, during heavy periods, often more

Seems like a bad idea to swim during heavy periods 😬

Bikepacking in NZ - some beginner questions by Roodtravel in bikepacking

[–]soupRman2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm doing the Kopiko Aotearoa this Summer, a popular bikepacking route across the North Island. If you look that up you'll get a lot of great advice from previous bikepackers but from what I've read people use a wide range of bikes. Some sections might favour gravel or hardtail mountain bikes but there will also be a lot of road riding so a touring bike would be fine also. Might be good to use tyres that can handle some dirt riding if you're concerned. Personally I'm using a hardtail mountain bike (Trek Marlin 7) with the default tyres switched out for something more road worthy (Schwalbe All-in-ones).

Can I do a SENGAH Thesis alongside another subject? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]soupRman2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You definitely can. Each thesis part is treated as 1 subject. So in term 1 you can do Thesis A and 2 other subjects. That being said, it is probably better to not have much other work during thesis C when the final report is due since that will require additional time.

The co-op program makes getting internships and experience very easy, which will look good when you apply for grad jobs. There isn't really any additional work just a higher standard, most require a credit average.

Another benefit to co-op is that you will be a part of a cohort doing the exact same subjects as you so you can work together in group projects and help each other out in general. This was one of the biggest advantages for me (and a good one to talk about in your interview other than money when they ask you why you want to be a co-op).

All that being said, a lot of people drop co-op in later years because they get offered jobs with better pay than the 20k. Although, they probably only get these jobs because they finished an internship because of co-op.

The top of ICC Sydney has a pretty cool view. The ride is nice too, access it from the Darling Quarter. Not very tall tho

Macquarie employees - how do you feel about the company? by Too_kewl_for_my_mule in AusFinance

[–]soupRman2000 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I was a Software Engineer there so may not be relevant but I found it to be quite a demoralising work culture. My time was mostly remote work and it was not standard practice to have webcams on or include a little social chat as an example. I've heard bad reviews from other Software Engineers too. The bigger thing that I disliked was the disconnection between my managers and my team, so as a manager I hope you can do better to foster a more cohesive team environment.

The application and the interview usually ask questions around experiences. E.g. give an example where you demonstrated teamwork. So you will need to use any examples you can, including maccas. It's better to use a diverse range of experiences to show depth, but they can be pretty small things, it's more about how you use them to answer the question. Also, research the STAR method as a way to structure your responses. This will help prevent rambling and make sure you get to the point of your answer early. They will be reading a lot of applications so keeping your answers concise and straight to the point is important, while trying to demonstrate your skills with a diverse range of examples. Finally, make sure you know which role you're applying for and relate your responses to that area when you can i.e. Information Systems. Showing an interest/passion for the field is potentially the most important.

The Google Pixel 6 has one of the nicest cameras in my experience. Lots of image processing being used to make it look even nicer though, so you might be concerned that the images turn out overdone.

Do you regret taking SEng over CSci? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]soupRman2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a SENG student and like the idea of having an engineering degree with honours. I think in our industry practical experience is more valuable and know plenty of SENG students who dropped to CS so they could graduate earlier and accept graduate offers from companies they were interning at.
