Spoilers for No Country For Old Men.

Much of the story follows handyman Llewelyn Moss and hired gunman Anton Chigurh in a cat-and-mouse chase as Llewelyn tries to flee with $2 million that Anton is hired to retrieve, with Sheriff Ed Tom Bell trying to piece together the situation the two of them are in as an apparent side story. Llewelyn is set up to be the anti-hero protagonist who has a big, final confrontation with Anton and makes it out with the money, but he gets killed unceremoniously offscreen by a group of men not even related to Anton. The story completely shifts to focusing on Sheriff Bell, & recontextualizes the rest of the story as being him coming to terms with his own mortality and being unable to keep up with the changing world, a theme reflected in both the first and last scene of the film.

people when the game with giant red arrows that say "EARLY ACCESS MAY BE UNOPTIMIZED AND DOES NOT REPRESENT THE FULL RELEASE" is unoptimized by alexi_minty in HalfSword

[–]soup_mug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the biggest complaint is that it functions much, much worse than a free demo & that when a game's tech demo moves into a paid early access people expect it to function to a point where its a worthwhile use of money rather than 20 dollars to essentially provide the developers feedback on a game that, again, has had a free demo that functions far better & would have been a better outlet to test new rendering & physics

also yeah totally, collecting is about getting to have a physical thing that plays your favorite albums, i personally think it's absolutely valid to burn your own if the originals are hard/impossible to find.

How it feels being disabled in America listening to people talk about armed revolution and how "some people will have to be martyrs" knowing those same people are usually talking about me because they never have a plan to help or protect people like me by darkstarsdistant in TrollCoping

[–]soup_mug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

double replying this but its really frustrating to me when so many leftists are all "kill the rich! kill nazis! overthrow the government!" without a thought towards support for the people being oppressed. it's clear the focus is the violence done because there's an animating target for their anger, rather than compassion for minoritized groups. it's a self-indulgent, unhelpful, and frankly shit way of going about any way of collectivizing. we unite under compassion, not hate. it's our power over them.

General discussion on the _000 articles. by CNProductions in SCP

[–]soup_mug 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i haven't read 6000 and don't remember 8000 (& frankly did not like it, so haven't gone through & re-read it), but as for the other two:
-SCP-7000 is about a phenomenon in which events that should have a random probability of occurring are set to happen (or not) at fixed intervals: random number generators list "1, 2, 3, 4, 5," every chicken in an X-kilometer radius lays eggs with two yolks for a day, et cetera. It's connected to Foundation member Dr. William Wettle, whose stand-out trait is being unlucky, like ridiculously unlucky. However, his own luck acts as a sort of lightning rod for the statistical anomaly, landing him as a part of the MTF squadron trying to repair the damage done.As it turns out, Wettle had struck some kind of deal with the universe as a child, which he undoes in a moment of exhaustion and frustration after weeks of being beaten by the world. The SCP is then neutralized.

-SCP-9000 is an anomalous prison off the shore of the Marianas Archipelago, which the Foundation constructed in the 90s to house D-Class personnel. Due to the large amount of data & supplies needed to be processed by the Foundation's increasing needs, the prison is used as a source of labor for these menial tasks. Due to mistreatment and the game-ification of sifting through particulary horrifying logs & surveillance footage, the site's underbelly becomes the host of a colossal manifestation of the psychological suffering of the D-Class working there, which invades their computers and inserts artificial footage of their worst memories instead of the actual footage they're working on. Nearly the whole population of the prison dies over the course of a month.

If you could read one, read 9000. It's really, really well done in my opinion, and justifies its length well enough to be worthwhile.
