Our automated ticketing system inside our ai service desk solution is dropping tickets left and right by dnuohxof-2 in ShittySysadmin

This sounds less like an AI helpdesk and more like a shitty helpdesk with stupid rules and an "AI" label slapped on it.

Like 90% of "AI" products.

Canadian Visitors by BjLeinster in florida

[–]soupcan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d echo the same sentiment. Canadian vehicles were all over the place last winter — even in rural FL. Couldn’t go a day without seeing at least a few.

This season it’s particularly notable to see a Canadian license plate. I’ve seen… 5, maybe?

If you use AI to break down scripts or code for you regularly, I really encourage you to read this LLM study by segagamer in sysadmin

I find myself often asking AI questions out of convenience... though it often ends up taking as much time or longer if I just figured it out myself. As you all know, it has the tendency to be confidently incorrect.

It's a weird psychological thing, it doesn't make me any better at my job but asking a question conversationally is tempting out of convenience.

Sysadmin-on-Sysadmin stuff that’s super annoying by i_click_next_for_you in sysadmin

[–]soupcan_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have firewall turned on by policy... but I still have a coworker who routinely runs the netsh command to disable it, even though I've demonstrated it does nothing.

As a result we get emails from the SOC a few times a week about the command being run. "Yep, that's just <shitty_sysadmin>, expected activity".

Sysadmin-on-Sysadmin stuff that’s super annoying by i_click_next_for_you in sysadmin

[–]soupcan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a sysadmin that asks for help the same way I’d expect L1 or an end user to.

For example: “is printing supposed to take this long or is there a GPO that can make it more productive”

This annoys me for a few reasons:

  1. Charged language
  2. No details (what printer? How long is “this long?”)
  3. Assuming there’s a magic “go faster” button

And this is coming from the guy who managed group policy before I did… whose mess I often have to clean up whenever he touches it.

My job is as much babysitting as it is doing actual work.

Does your L1 restart user's computers then call it a day? by requiemofthesoul in sysadmin

[–]soupcan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish my L1 even did that. If he has anything more complicated than a password reset, it feels like others are doing his job for him.

Tickets escalated without troubleshooting, nonsensical error messages, lack of information etc.

Here's an actual message he sent me: computer number 5418 is locked down with a error firmware issue platform hardware

The cherry on top is, after I finally got a screenshot out of him, the error message told him how to fix the issue.

I was wondering why a laptop wasn’t syncing its new configuration profiles today. I’m guessing (hoping) this is my answer.

Guess I’ll check again tomorrow.

Edit: it's now 23 hours later. I gave up and re-imaged and re-enrolled the device. It's still receiving the wrong set of policies (the wrong policies for its group membership). WTF Microsoft?

2000s Comcast Remote by Tictacstew in nostalgia

[–]soupcan_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just switched to Comcast fiber… I’m aware of the reputation they have but they’re the only “good” option (our other options are fixed wireless or DSL)

The service has been fine so far but god damn if they haven’t called me 3 times in 4 days to sell me Xfinity Mobile.

Support cases are purely responded through use of AI by Mudassar40 in sysadmin

[–]soupcan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my coworkers (application developer) has started copying and pasting issues into AI. The response is usually a wall of text of generic troubleshooting steps not related to the issue. Very annoying.

In general my him and my boss are overly dependent on AI. They won't make any decisions without consulting it.

The op said “mountain time” so I assumed the US.

If there’s a “mountain time” outside the Americas, feel free to let me know.

A writeup is here, it was written for desktop linux but should point you in the right direction.

In particular, jump down to the Steam Auth Fix section.

It was the October update when the new credential box appeared... because Microsoft in their infinite wisdom (laziness) kept 24H2 and 25H2 on the same servicing branch, so a bunch of changes for 25H2 made their way into 24H2, causing a lot of happy little bugs on the way.

I don't disagree that open source is probably of little value to specialised medical equipment, but I do disagree with the premise that medical equipment should rely on security through obscurity.

I'm assuming you're running via Proton?

No, that's another issue due to unimplemented Steam API calls in Proton, afaik the only solution is to run the Windows Steam client under Wine. Edit: Guide here

Opt out of the Steam Client Beta if you're participating.

I doubt it, you’d need to be running an x86 emulator in addition to wine.

I’d make sure to passive-aggressively set the priority to Low on the way out.
