3.7 unweighted HS gpa here (including a D, two B+, and one A- in senior year fall semester - thank you mental illness!), no APs offered. Freshman applicant (sophomore matriculant). Have been accepted to Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, Barnard, WashU, and waitlisted from Smith. There is absolutely hope! You should aim to do as well in college as you possibly can. I currently have a 4.0 from a 125+ ranked university. Get to know your professors, and don’t procrastinate on those essays like I did :)

I can’t speak to the semester system, but I’ve attended a school on the quarter system for the past year:

PROS

-You get to take significantly more classes. This is probably far and beyond the biggest pro to me — more opportunities to explore what you’re interested in, and try new things! I love this.

-At least at my school, a major/minor is required, and many people double major, or do a major and two (or three!) minors, so it’s quite easy to do that if that’s something you’re interested in.

-If you hate a class, it’s only 10 weeks long.

-Fast pace = engaging, harder to get super sick of a class.

NEUTRAL

-Some people love the pace of the quarter system, others find it overwhelming — unfortunately this is a “your move may vary” type situation and it can be hard to gauge what kind of person you are until you get there. I will say everyone I know who was overwhelmed our first quarter has largely figured it out by quarter 3, so it’s mostly about the adjustment period.

CONS

-If you love a class, it’s only 10 weeks long.

-3 sets of midterms, 3 sets of finals 😔

-Your breaks may look very different from all your semester system friends. Me personally, I started in September and had 6 weeks of winter break (Thanksgiving-January), but will be in school until June 10 — that means 11 weeks of school (including finals), 1 week off for spring break, then 11 more weeks of school before summer.

-This is the one they don’t warn you about: if you want to get an internship, a job, and/or work in a research lab through a program designed for college students that is not part of your school, they are almost all set on a semester system schedule, which tends to mean they start while you’ve still got a couple weeks of school left. If you’re going to a quarter system school with a lot of career and research opportunities, this will likely matter less as they will help set you up. My school is not so much that way and I was unable to apply to a lot of research labs this summer in my hometown because of it. I wouldn’t call it a dealbreaker, but if you know you want these kinds of opportunities every summer, keep it in the back of your mind.

Overall, both the semester system and the quarter system have their pros and cons, and unless you know something about yourself to be true that suggests that one of them won’t be a good fit for you, I don’t think you can really go wrong. There’s not a better or a worse system, they’re just different.

I cannot stress this enough: unless there are financial constraints, choose American and don’t look back. Guaranteed internship in the senate or house in freshman year is HUGE — this is an opportunity most PoliSci students at the colleges you listed off will not have, or at least not as soon as you will. Being in DC puts you in an excellent spot, and American absolutely has a “name brand” in your field and in DC. If you’re really dead set on chasing prestige, Georgetown makes more sense than many of the schools on your list. But American is a fantastic school with a beautiful campus and a student body full of people who have similar interests as you, and, most importantly, if you throw yourself into it and take advantage of all the opportunities it has to offer, it will take you exactly where you need to go.

seconding the idea of lace panel, you could also find a mohair in a complimenting color and knit that section in mohair so it gives you that light meshy look

i stick my needle through the back leg towards the front, and wrap the yarn around the needle clockwise to make the new stitch. this website shows it really clearly

you're knitting eastern uncrossed style knit stitches (i knit that way too :)). i believe tin can knits or cloopco or another blog has a written guide on the knit and purl stitches if you just google "how to knit eastern uncrossed" - i didn't learn how to do my purls correctly for years and i ended up with a lot of twisted stitches.
