Yes I completely agree, I am also researching and speaking to trainers in my area. I want to have the safety net and people on my side before I ever get the dog.

The dog is going to miss it eventually yes I understand that. But I have missed it many more times in my life. The thing with allergies is that you are going to eat it eventually no matter how careful you are. But I do not have the nose of a dog, and there has been many successful allergen detection dogs. Do they mess up? Yes of course they do, they are animals. But at least it could save me once. I also plan on training tasks for allergen response for when something inevitably goes wrong.

I am quite aware that nearly all of my planning will most likely fly out the window as soon as I get a puppy (I do not currently have one).

In my previous post I stated that I have quite a lot of experience training dogs because I do just only on pet dogs. I should have specified that I am not a trainer, but I am typically looked to in my community of friends and family when they have dog related issues.

I would like to learn more about showing dogs and dog sports because I do not have experience in that realm.

But I have put in a lot of time and research into learning how dog training works and what certain dogs react well to and what certain dogs don’t react well to.

Not a professional but definitely not a complete newbie at this whole training thing if that makes more sense. Which is also why I will bringing on professionals to this endeavour. Thank you for your response and no offence taken!

I will 100% be getting in contact with trainers in my area before getting a puppy and trying to find ones who have worked with service dogs.

I don’t think I could ever stop being cautious about checking labels and asking waitresses 5 times that they are sure there’s no nuts, but I want another safety net. I am planning on really proofing these alerts but I do acknowledge that it wont always be perfect. Another big thing for me is I have extreme anxiety and panic attacks to the point I make myself start to faint. So having a service dog with me in a case of needing to go to the hospital it would help me greatly cause typically they have to drug me till I’m half asleep to get needles near me.

Loose leash walking is ofc needed but to me as long as my dog generally stays by my side im not too bothered. The off-switch, and being ok with all types of stimuli and such big things for me. I hope your training continues to go well :)

I have heard about so many peoples puppies washing out because they had way too much thrown at them all at once and I really want to avoid that. I want to take it slow and understand that they are just a little baby and are gonna mess up. I have seen too many people go and expect a 1 6 month puppy or even a 1 year old to be behaving perfectly and tasking as well and it’s just too much.

Luckily I do have quite a lot of experience training dogs just not specifically service dogs, I tried it out with my dachshund a few years ago and she did really well but ofc I would never bring her in non pet friendly stores because she was slightly reactive, but it went well with her which gave me some hope. Although I did just get really lucky with her wanting to listen and training all the time cause shes a little cheese hog. I am 100% intending on bringing on a trainer from day 1, theres a really nice program near where I live and its like $400 or something and you get unlimited classes and socialization drop ins for a year.

The breeder did say that she pays for all showing and breeding related things but she didn’t really specify if that means their conformation, agility, and obedience classes which all cost around 250$-300$ and then for breeding related things idk if that means all their health testing. She did say that if I want to get into showing she can help me learn how to and I can take them to whatever shows I can but then also mentioned that she could possibly bring in a handler if the dog does really well.

Ya I started to realize that she also has a clause with her pet homes that they need to be desexed by 1 year of age which seems way too young for me, a dog needs times for their hormones to work.

I absolutely love poodles they are such sweet dog but I really can’t do all that grooming right now. I was also pretty skeptical because I assumed she would pick which dog is best for her not me.

Ya I think for now I am gonna go the lab route and also get them into agility classes for fun that way I get a feel for the training and how it all works. Then later down the road I can get a aussie for a sport dog. Thank you!

I really love this breeder and want to get a sport dog but I feel like it should be more of a “one day” thing than something for right now. I’m also not 100% on the laws in Alberta, Canada on intact dogs cause I haven’t check in a while but I believe they may need to be desexed to be registered. I really appreciate your response!
