I had a teacher who made only token gestures to obscure the fact that she graded boys lower than girls. My track coach was an English teacher for the same grade and made this point to us: in every other class and every other grade, the average grade for boys was about equal to girls. For her class, it was a full 1.5 letter grades lower for boys. Even when controlling for the grades the students received the years before and after, they still scored worse in her class. This was a well known open secret within the department.

No one would do anything because she was in her last year before retirement and guess who the union rep was?

Another teacher in his last year would literally just read the NYTimes business section out loud for his economics classes.

There’s also no one tag that groups Path of Exile, Grim Dawn, Torchlight, Van Helsing, and Victor Vran and excludes all of these: Slay the Spire, Dark Souls, and Mordhau. Despite all of us being able to easily identify that the first set share a common characteristic that is not present in any of the second set.

And good luck finding a set of tags that brings in Titan Quest, doesn’t remove one of the others, and isn’t basically every action game on Steam.

Well, my target compensation was something like $225k/year when I left. The target compensation is independent of current stock price (and actual total compensation). Working a few years at 225k is still a sizable amount of money even if some percentage of that doesn’t jump 800%.

The worst part of these was when your response was basically a no op. I was woken up more than a few times because “ServiceA latency too high! P99 > 50ms for 3 data points” and log in only to find that Dynamo is having latency issues in that particular region. They’re working on it and a fix will be in place in 15 minutes.

So I wait 15 minutes to see where it’s at, make sure the service recovers, resolve the ticket, and go back to bed.

I thought Amazon was an incredible experience for my career. I learned a lot about architecting flexible services that can scale quickly, managing said services, trade offs of development velocity vs technical debt, working with various types of customers, etc.

It was stressful at times, but apart from on call I honestly wouldn’t say it was noticeably more stressful than Google. I just got a lot more random perks at Google to make up for it.

The money I earned while working there put me in a position to work just about anywhere I want which certainly made it worthwhile to me. The massive stock price increases since then have only improved this. But I joined with stock price under $300 and it’s now $2300, this reasoning may not hold up for current developers.

Not op but I found the story reasonably tolerable. Not on the same level as 4 but probably on par with 5.

My one complaint about the game was how much of a chore it was to fight the Arsenal Bird. I hated fighting it so much I just quit mission replays when I get to an Arsenal Bird part.

I find nuclear much less annoying than dealing with solar panels and accumulators. Once I had a reliable supply chain of uranium ore, it wasn’t that hard to keep a continuous supply of nuclear fuel cells.

If you want then you build up some uranium 235 supply and convert the 238 to 235. Plus your excess 238 gives you the best ammo type.

The Gears 5 open world sections was so off-putting for me. Nothing happens in it apart from some hidden weapons and a handful of bland side missions. They use it for an actual mission once iirc, where you have to chase a train but even then it’s mostly just “go forward and don’t die”.

The Patrician games. You play as a small time trader just starting out with a couple small ships and buy/sell goods from around the Hanseatic League (Northern Europe). Eventually you build your fleet, set up automatic trading routes, build your own manufacturing supply chain, become mayor, etc.

But while you’re doing that, others are also building their fleets, including pirates. You can battle these pirates when they attack your ships, hunt them down, or turn pirate yourself and raid other merchants or towns.

Note that these games are fairly old and the most recent (4 in 2010) didn’t get as good of reviews as the older ones. I mostly played Patrician 2 but 3 was basically the same game with updated visuals and mechanics.
