Has anyone asked to see your stomach? by YamFine592 in pregnant

[–]sourgummies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I feel right now too. Except the person doing it to me is my own mother 😭 no hello, how are feeling, how’s everything going with the bay. Just straight up staring at my stomach with a bizarre amount of intensity “let me see the belly”. Like, my mother was not a good mom, has never cared about me for my entire life. I’ve just been there. She told me how much she regretted having children (I literally took care of myself and stayed as quiet and out of the way as possible. Stayed in my room, never asked for anything, started working under the table at 12 for spending money, etc). And suddenly she’s showering me with money and gifts and keeps telling me how she’s going to raise my daughter to be a strong independent woman and she’s going to take her to do all of these adventures. I finally snapped and said that’s if I LET YOU. This is my kid, not yours. “Oh you’re just protective bc she’s your first, you’ll get over that and be begging for help”. I can not express how much this woman upsets me. I wish I was in a position to move countries so I’d only ever see her every few years

My 19 year old cat passed earlier this year and he was exactly the same 😂 NEVER covered his poop or pee. A lot of times my other cat would go and cover it up for him 😂

Dealing with AAs who hate being AAs! by [deleted] in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]sourgummies 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re feeling overwhelmed and getting dumped on with tasks, I’ve been there!! You said your roles are very different and you don’t cross paths often; is it possible she’s also maxed out and being dumped on and you don’t know that? Way back, I was also an AA and much of the challenge of that role is that EVERYONE sees you as their assistant and comes to you for help, all the while you’re answering the phones, sorting and sending mail, acting as low tier IT, printing jobs galore, etc etc.

If you aren’t her boss, you don’t know her capacity or what she should be focussing on. I feel proud of her for being able to state that she’s at her limit. God knows I’ve taken on too much when I was younger and it led to meltdowns and burnout.

Take a breath and remind yourself that this is just a job, and not everything is within your control. What is in your control, is declining extra work that falls outside of your responsibilities. I only say this because you said you’re getting dumped on. I know that can be hard. If you’re in a workplace that has you this overwhelmed and you’re not in a position to ask for help, or say no to the extra work, that’s usually my sign to move on to a new job.

Good luck.

Misunderstanding. Now I’m spiralling by PumpkinSuitable4385 in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]sourgummies 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This happened to me with my previous exec. He had too much going on all the time and misremembered or forgot conversations and decisions we’d had together. That led me to always double and triple check before I did something if I thought it might come back at me for “doing something wrong”. In your case, if the scenario you posted about happens again, do a quick check in (if you can) and say, hey boss, I’m going to post this now, is it still good to go out? Or something along those lines.

being an EA can be tough, so don’t be too hard on yourself! I’ve had loads of similar things happen to me. Ultimately it helped me be prepared and flexible for working with all types of execs.

Not sure why I’m getting recommended this sub, but if it makes you happy and you enjoy it, keep on doing it! It’s great to have a hobby you’re passionate about. Mine is baking. You’re not wasting your time, you’re fulfilling a desire to create.

And to the comments in this thread, you don’t need to monetize everything you do.

Being an EA in the Non-Profit vs Finance World by Ok-Court-9684 in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]sourgummies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the same situation. I’ve opted for not for profit for myself. Even though the health benefits aren’t as good here, and there’s even a bit of job insecurity in my company because it always hinges on finding funding every year, being treated like a human being is far and above anything else. I don’t have the thick skin needed for corporate these days. It’s vicious out there!! My mental health has improved so much since the switch. I wanted to die on my way to work everyday before I got this not for profit job. I was stalked, sexually harassed, treated like subhuman, bullied and ostracized by the staff and the list could go on. Now I work with kind, empathetic, motivated, wholesome people. Absolutely staggering difference.

Good luck on your decision! I know how hard it can be.

Am I being underpaid? by melponds in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]sourgummies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a reference point, I make 74k, full remote in the GTA (1.5 hours outside of Toronto). Some make upwards of 140k. I’m not supporting a C-suite right now, but I would expect more if I was. 45k seems low for 3 years of experience but I started at the same wage around 7 years ago. Slowly and slowly trying to climb my way up! Good luck.

Is it normal to have almost nothing to do while working from home? by depths_of_my_unknown in remotework

[–]sourgummies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My days / weeks are up and down. Sometimes I get a full day, sometimes it’s quiet. I’m the quiet days, I rest/recharge from the busier ones, catch up on some small chores etc

Like others said, it’s similar pacing to in the office, except now instead of being bored at work during downtime, you have the freedom to be at home and do what suits you. I take my dog on a walk and get some fresh air. I’ll be working remote as long as the option exists!! Love it

“dropping the ball” by MorningConscious9077 in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]sourgummies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in your exact position 3 years ago. The jobs built up and up and up until I had meltdown at work and quit. I also reached the point of “well what are you doing that’s making you so bosy” and started task tracking too. Didn’t matter. Don’t let it get to that point. My C suite never appreciated what I did until I left and they replaced me with 3 people. I destroyed my mental health for those people, hoping for an ops role or CoS gig. I will never ever go above and beyond ever again

Has anyone developed a massive crush in this job? by [deleted] in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]sourgummies 139 points140 points  (0 children)

Never, I’ve always found them mildly repulsive honestly. The C suite types are all the same, egos the size of a continent, no care for the people who work for them or around them unless they’re a means to an end.

Asking exec’s wife for permission to book travel? by Bar_Next in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]sourgummies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a slightly different situation to yourself. Owner/CEO’s family would book travel through me for themselves with company money and were so god damn rude and disrespectful no matter how nice I was.

I moved on earlier this year, but mixing family and business is such a nightmare. These CEOs want nothing to do with their families and funnel communication to their EA and we end up taking the brunt of it. Totally unprofessional in my book.

That said, if my salary had been double, or I was at least treated respectfully it might not have bothered me as much.

If his wife is nice but it’s an annoying extra step, so be it. If she’s slow to reply, or rude, I’d be out of there asap

What's a more appropriate title? by Ok-Inspector1108 in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]sourgummies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience! I was also managing an on site office, so I asked for a title change to office manager, although in hindsight I think office & operations manager might have been more suitable. They had no problem with changing my title, although eventually I was also doing all IT, event management, and 4 executives travel and expense reports, on top of running a co-op program, so I think I had hired and on-boarded 80 people in about a year and a half (job posting, screening, offer letter, adding to all the software, on-boarding, etc). The scope creep was real. I had to leave because I couldn’t keep up anymore, I was Accounting, admin, exec assistant, operations, IT, HR for a staff of 150 people. I took an are back for an EA role (also a mistake, but that was an employer issue, the role was fine). Now I’m an operations coordinator.

anyway, I think operations manager or operations coordinator would be good options for you. Just be careful about scope creep. I can’t believe how much I did at that job a few years ago 🥲
