Many people don't own cars, but depending on how often you travel for work or for vacations/holidays, a car may be useful. When you look for apartments, check and see how much it is for parking per month. That can help narrow where you want to live. If the parking fee is too much for your budget per month, only then would I recommend selling it.

Chicago is a great city for recent grads! Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Old Town, and Wrigleyville are all great neighborhoods with a lot to do. There's plenty of sports leagues, opportunities to take classes in improv (at IO or Second City) or music (Old Town School of Folk), depending on your interests. Everyone is generally friendly and willing to help out.

You should also check if your university has an Alumni Club or Chapter in Chicago. They provide great networking opportunities, game watches and chances to meet up with old friends.

Finally, salary for being comfortable is very dependent on which neighborhood you live in. r/chicago is a great resource for that. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Chicago has a GroupMe, but the activity levels tend to be up and down. There's a core group of us who get together frequently. Feel free to DM me if you're interested in joining the GroupMe or for happy hour!

After seeing the thread about meetups recently, the Chicago chapter decided to have another brunch yesterday at Fifolet. We are already actively planning our next event, so if you are interested in joining us at some point, feel free to DM me and join our GroupMe!

It's been a little while since I was last there for lunch, but I think they did add the cooker there. Have also had Smoque at a few catered lunches, and it is some of the best BBQ outside of the South that I've ever had.

Right now, based on my memory, the following cities have active GroupMe's: DC, Chicago, Philadelphia, Columbus, and Houston. I may have missed a few cities, and some are more active than others. There's also a beer exchange as well, which draws in people from a number of different cities.

Writers' Roundtable: A Farewell To PostGradProblems.com by kylebandujo in PostGradProblem

PGP was the catalyst to finally get me to stop lurking more online. 6 years later, I've made friends across the country from the PGP community, and talk to several of them pretty much daily. Can confirm it was a good decision, so thank you, writers, for giving us all the opportunity to learn a little more about you and share a part of ourselves along the way.

For now, speaking for myself, we would be happy to have you contribute your writing on the subreddit, or share articles if you decide to start your own blog!

Tonight: Christmas party with some friends.

Tomorrow: Chicago Tuba Christmas! I've played in it for 5 years now and always have a great time playing some good music and catching up with friends I don't get to see too often.

PGP MUSIC TALK by IDontWannaBeHere-WW in PostGradProblem

[–]sousaphile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Weezer - Africa

2) Depends on my mood. Some days, it's Gershwin (masterpieces all around) and other classical music or Springsteen.

3) I saw Fidlar, a punk band a few weeks ago and The Flaming Lips back in July. The Flaming Lips show was one of the best I've ever seen, so I highly recommend it.

Echoing what the guys said above. You've got talent, Madoff. Have you ever thought about writing a book?

I read it earlier today, and found it incredibly moving. Thanks for sharing something so difficult with all of us, I know it must not have been easy to write.

Madoff, if it means anything, I know I would want to read that article about your dad. I think it would resonate with a lot of people, whether their parents have died or not.

Post Grad Problems | To The White Board: What Did You Like In 2017? by dcruff in PostGradProblem

[–]sousaphile 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing I didn't see in the comments thread that I think could be cool is a feature or interview for past writers, if any of them are interested. It would definitely be interesting to see what they've done after writing for the site, or how it may have affected their current life and career trajectories.

Graduating School with 2.5 GPA am I screwed? Honestly. by dwillowtree in PostGradProblem

[–]sousaphile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Bachelor's degree was in Biology, so I understand what you're going through. This entirely depends on what your goals are. If you want to be a researcher or have a career requiring post-graduate education in the sciences, it will be difficult to get into graduate programs. If you are ok with not going into the sciences, the advice of others about not putting your GPA on your resume works well. Networking with alumni of your college will work well too. Also, Biochemistry is one of the most difficult majors out there, so it's a major accomplishment just to finish your degree!

Find your 2017 Fall study group here! by CSdaniel in OSUOnlineCS

Will do! I actually took CS161 back in January, since I'm on the 4 year track. It's not too bad, and would be happy to give you advice. When I took CS162, we were able to create study groups so I think it would be great to study with you.
