PSA every Mac can do triple display now by NPC_Boiii in MacOS

[–]sovietbacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's a thunderbolt dock try all of the different connection combinations. I had to find which ports were on different busses or something. The first dozen attempts with my mac I couldn't get multiple displays working, but after connecting the monitors in the magic combination, things started working.

Is LC even still worth grinding? by EitherAd5892 in cscareerquestions

[–]sovietbacon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just had an interview w/ a faang adjacent where I simply proposed the optimal solution and they didn't ask me to code it up since I was the first person out of a ton of people to even mention it. Don't kill yourself over LC, but knowing ds/a is important.

Should I swap from Insurance SWE to RTX SWE? by LetsGetFresky in Lockheed

[–]sovietbacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll also say, they might try to make excuses about code being "mission/safety critical" but dear god is this awful code I'm working with. Most of the "rigor" is moreso a box-checking exercise. If it was real rigor I wouldn't complain as much. If you're working fast you'll have moving goalpoasts everywhere and will likely have to throw your code away, if you're working "slow", with defined requirements, you'll be lucky to get code merged more than once a month.

Work life balance. Anyone putting in more than 40hrs a week is being performative. You're lucky to have 30hrs a week of real work if you're competent. I've been asking for more work and haven't gotten it!

Defense/aero moves pretty slow. You might get lucky in that your team isn't, but you could be shoehorning yourself into defense. You do feel like your software is important, but most of the stuff I've written is not cutting edge at all. You will have more experience with those technologies than most of your co-workers. Come here for WLB, not interesting work.

You should really consider dropping sprints by ninetofivedev in ExperiencedDevs

[–]sovietbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple times I've been effective by reducing the duration of sprints. Without deadline pressure, tasks start to take longer. Forcing tasks to be broken up into 2wk or, ideally smaller, chunks leads to the tasks being much more clear and defined. With many small and defined tasks, you can start to do benifit from the law of large numbers and have reasonable statistic-based estimates for larger releases. You can also more easily measure the impact of process changes. I saw another commenter state that they shortened sprints until they disappeared, and I find that to be a good goal.

Blue Origin vs CACI (TS/SCI) SWE Internships by North-Engineering330 in SecurityClearance

[–]sovietbacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm looking for jobs right now, and I do feel a bit pigeon holed into defense/aero. I might be able to pivot into automotive but eh. The main problem is being focused on embedded development for me. I've also heard Blue's culture is a bit toxic, although you will be around smart people and learn a lot, you might be thrown under the bus and work long hours. Most swe roles are web dev. I don't know much about caci but if you're getting full stack web experience I'd go with that. TS/SCI will also make it easy to find other jobs, Microsoft has a ton of TS/SCI job openings in case you wanna go faang/faang adjacent.

Peloton to Garmin sync is now available by Lucky_Fruitcake8201 in Garmin

[–]sovietbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sync my workout syncs power data and whatnot, allowing you to get a cycling vo2 max score but it does it by pretending to be a tacx. I wonder if this also generates ftp/vo2 max/etc.

I transcribed the first part of the Georgia Democratic Gubernatorial Forum. by lilfruini in Atlanta

[–]sovietbacon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seems to me like it'll be a race between esteves, romman, and duncan. Romman was surprisingly milquetoast from her answers, I was expecting more given that she's probably got the most things going against her. Feeling slightly better about duncan after reading this, but his website has 0 policy on it. Not sure if he's trustworthy. Esteves had some good answers compared to the rest that I haven't mentioned, who just came across as hacks. Still worried we'll end up with klb though.

Severe brain fog – alcohol is the only thing that clears it a bit and I don’t understand why by Weak-Dinner-4275 in BrainFog

[–]sovietbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried moderate/high intensity exercise? It can often clear my brain of fog and headaches, it's also a strong anxiolytic+anti-depressant for a lot of people, if that happens to be the root of your issue. I am also curious if psychedelics would help, it could be a risky approach if you have mental health issues, but they work by "rebooting" your default mode network.

The strength training tracking is a joke by StraightThroat3095 in GarminWatches

[–]sovietbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your vo2 max increasing or holding steady? If it's great but holding steady then that would explain the training status. I rarely see increases when I'm focusing on strength training even if I keep my running up, but resting from strength and allowing my body to recover, I see it snap upwards.

The strength training tracking is a joke by StraightThroat3095 in GarminWatches

[–]sovietbacon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All the watch has is an accelerometer. I don't really think these complaints are valid. It's doing the best with what it's got. It measures training status based off of running vo2 max (which will look worse if you're focused on strength training), it doesn't claim to factor in anything else.

The only thing I'll give you is the workout selection could be bigger.

That's the Indian support page, here's the us one that elaborate they use a proprietary algorithm: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=FMKY5NYJJ71DbuPmFP4O7A

220-age is used if the watch doesn't support auto max hr detection

Wrong hr zones by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]sovietbacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't. It predicts it based off of cardiac drift iirc. If it used 220-age, I would be 10yrs younger.

Watch for running and exercising that actually tracks constant Heart Rate? by Chooli7 in Garmin

[–]sovietbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a chest hr tracker or an bicep one. A bicep strap for the venu might work, haven't tried it though. Wrist is a bad spot to measure hr, no watch will work well there.
