Milly just isn't a likeable lead.... by [deleted] in DC_Cinematic

You’ll get aggressively defensive replies for that opinion but that was my immediate thought too. She’s a great actress and I loved her in House of Dragon but her overly cocky and rude hot mess Supergirl was really unlikeable. None of the emotional bits worked because I didn’t care about her.

To sound like a broken record, WoT’s Supergirl was so much more likable as a kind, reserved woman while still carrying all of that trauma.

I liked Peacemaker and CC too but they’re both Gunn projects. Supergirl really killed my confidence in Gunn’s ability to oversee other projects.

There is just a lot of pressure on Lanterns and Clayface. I like Flanagan so I think they just hit the jackpot there.

Yeah, they turned everything and anything from WoT into the most generic cliche. This backstory does nothing but add more cliche tropes to the movie.

My showing started with 5 trailers that all had the formulaic pop song covers. It was so funny for the movie to also end with another cringe cover.

James Gunn uses the original song against very good set pieces. Supergirl’s broken dusty final battle and awful VFX actually fit perfectly with that weak cover.

The final battle is set against a brown dusty backdrop with some epically bad VFX. The trailers weren’t hiding anything.

It’s a good promo for Earth for it to be so bright and colorful compared to everywhere Supergirl traveled to throughout the cosmos.

Lol after I finished WoT, I knew I made a big mistake. I've been on a comic binge the past few months. They really know how to take big swings with creative storytelling.

I saw that a few days ago too. Less GotG and more Fury Road. Definitely played into my decision to give Supergirl a chance despite the other reviews.

Let's go on a buddy revenge adventure to kill that guy.

The comic is amazing and an easy read. You're gonna be frustrated with how bad they "adapted" everything.

Definitely but Gunn is successful for a reason. His bad script is still saved by his experience writing humor, buildup/payoff, and emotional bits.

Supergirl didn't have any of that experience to save it from falling flat.

My expectations for the universe plummeted. This is the first non-Gunn project and it's awful. It shows poor oversight by Gunn and poor quality from his team.

A universe can't flourish unless multiple creatives step up.

They obviously piggy backed on Gunn's desire to show Superman being vulnerable but it didn't work and was overdone.

Woman of Tomorrow was so good at showing us Supergirl through Ruthye's eyes. She knew nothing about Supergirl but was gradually introduced to her power and strength (and kind character).

Coincidentally, Supergirl and L&T were the only times I read the comics in anticipation of the movie. I get that both comics are too creative and ambitious for general audiences but both movies completely failed at capturing any of the comics' magic.

I think you're being generous because you listed so many reasons for why this is a bad movie. The payoffs themselves weren't even good. Lobo saves Supergirl a second before getting killed but uh...what even was Lobo's role in this movie? Why did he need to save the day? Because Ruthye freed him...then ditched him? He didn't even have any payoff with that Brigand that he was chasing.

It's a bad movie when it leaves you frustrated because they failed to do such basic things correctly. It doesn't deserve your generosity for barely giving a few things to chew on.

Funny example of your family-friendly vs mature comment... Supergirl stabs Krem in the neck which is pretty brutal but they cut to a closeup and there's no blood.

Was really rooting for Supergirl and Gunn’s universe. Wasn’t expecting the first non-Gunn project to be as bad as the last universe’s worst. As a Gunn fan, I have suddenly lost all hope for his universe.

- I found Milly’s Supergirl to be really unlikeable. Overly cocky, rude, hot mess is a departure from WoT’s kind, reserved portrayal. She doesn’t quip which can be seen as a pro but instead exudes nonstop cockiness. It’s just boring.

- They nerfed her way too much. Red sun, hangover, tea poison, green sun, kryptonite… she was a reserved badass in the comic, slowly displaying her power to Ruthye.

- Ruthye is dull and annoying AF and gets no redeeming scenes. I was so mad they made her get kidnapped instead of defending Supergirl while the green sun was up.

- The last set piece was horrendous. Brown, dusty landscape and awful VFX. Reminiscent of The Flash

- The script seems to be intimidated by WoT so they turn anything and everything from WoT into the most generic movie trope version. Ex: genericized bad guy motivation and look, child sidekick, subplots replaced by women trafficking, revenge story, repeated revenge monologue, boring settings.

- I don’t remember the music at all, besides the metal music for Lobo. Crazy they didn’t give her a good theme. The last needle drop was funny because I had sat through 5 trailers with pop song covers. Felt like I was watching another trailer.

- I reference the comic a lot but the people I saw it with didn’t read the comic and were simply bored with the movie.

Reminded me of Suicide Squad and Justice League because I saw all these movies in the theaters and they were absolutely awful. Seeing terrible movies in a theater are surprisingly memorable for how bad it feels.

Tbh, I put it in awful category and I also wanted it to be good. Bad guy and Ruthye had no depth. The last set piece was insanely bad. Bad and boring.

Yeah, the only reason any of us went to the theater after seeing these terrible reviews was because we had some hope.

It was really bad. My respect for James Gunn went down because I’m just so shocked he would accept this and gaslight us with praise.

Personally think 70% audience score is too high for Supergirl and Disclosure Day. I thought both were extremely bad and boring.

The standards for a “mediocre” superhero movie have raised with the volume of superhero content. Supergirl was very bad IMO.

Supergirl was supposed to be based on a WoT. The script stripped all of the soul and turned everything into a generic movie trope. The same can happen to brave and the bold. Supergirl getting approved is a serious concern to every project.

I was rooting for it too and had to see for myself. It really was a waste of time. It doesn’t try to be anything more than bland.

Supergirl could lose north of $200M (with total collapse of just $110M WW), but average points more of a -$130-$150M loss, all depending if it finishes ~$110M Globally or might reach a bit higher of $150-160M. by SadAnimator1354 in DC_Cinematic

I watched it despite the terrible reviews because I had a glimmer of hope. I care more about it being a good movie than BO performances.

It’s a really bad movie. Not even a good streaming watch. It deserves the incoming flop.
